the translation is wrong a bit. it is the king, not the emperor. the background of the movie is at the period of no emperor. He just a king of one country, which China was separated into many countries. ---五代十国 even in the Chinese vision, using the word 'King' -王 ， not the 'emperor' -皇帝.

For me, reading the subtitles is never a problem....but I guess it is for some people...I think maybe they feel that they are missing too much reading the words rather than watching the beauty of the movie and the certain natural physical cues from the characters. Also, some people read slower than others!

Dub suck. If you talking about those dudes sitting outside the Inn yes, in the Tang dynasty, the emperor usually get his own retinue of cataphracts to help him look bad ass. Historical record also mentions Taizong, the first emperor of the Tang Dynasty brutalising enemies with his honor guard of "iron clad cavalry" when he was young. Everything cept chest armor are pretty accurate to figurines discovered from tang dig sites.
