For some reason, several late 70's Otis elevators and early to mid 90's Otis elevators have a similar motor to a Heights.

Search: "worcester red#2"
Montgomery HIGHdraulic Elevator.
Not as bad as your death trap, but the loud groaning noise at 2, then the cracking noise at 1, on top of a very shaky ride, bad. "Red#1" sounds worse, but it actually rides well, just a couple small bumps.
