Watch her live performances, she does what Xtina does - adds excessive vocal runs and shows off her vocal acrobatics. Whitney belts continuously with that mammoth voice of hers. Mariah decorates her music with melismas and utilises her whistle register too much. Oversinging is what defines a true singer.

It's on the right, Whitney singing this song in 1991. Listen to both. I love both of these women, they are legends in their own way. Listen and decide for yourself.

Leon Russell wrote the song, a white down-home country boy from Oklahoma. Donny did a great job, but it was a cover as well. But I agree that this was not a better rendition.

( Donny wrote so much about pain suffering as a Black man, it was just the times then). The overall point was, he could relate to this song, sorry Christina can't. There are many Artists, Country and Soul, who could relate to this and the feeling they express when they sing this song, is amazing, their suffering comes across.

Karen Carpenter did the best I can find, but it's not the best it could be. Donny Hathaway did a good version, and of course Leon Russell, and other guys. @thestarr2003 She does sound forced at times. The way she's modulating with the mic is a tad annoying. Live performances can be "Iffy". Stage Monitoring and lack of rehearsal time, let alone an empty hall vs. A filled one and thousands of other variables come into play.

I'm a Christina fan, but I do think that Karen Carpenter's version of this song is the definitive version. This song is meant to be intimate: it's "A Song For You," not "A Song For You And Everybody Else In The Room."

Christina's excessive vocal runs and melismas is what makes her "the voice of our generation". For those who complain about her "over-singing", mind you Whitney, The Voice over sings herself. Watch her live performances, she does what Xtina does - adds excessive vocal runs and shows off her vocal acrobatics. Whitney belts continuously with that mammoth voice of hers. Mariah decorates her music with melismas and utilises her whistle register too much. Oversinging is what defines a true singer.

Leon Russell wrote the song, a white down-home country boy from Oklahoma. Donny did a great job, but it was a cover as well. But I agree that this was not a better rendition.

Karen Carpenter did the best I can find, but it's not the best it could be. Donny Hathaway did a good version, and of course Leon Russell, and other guys. She does her thing. The whole music scene is such a mess that everything gets to be a big, clouded mess. For instance. Herbie Hancock agreed to work with her (then again Quincy Jones covered Strawberry Letter 23 with Akon)
At the end of the day. People that grew up listening to Donny Hathaway 'Live' aren't going to embrace this track even if it is good.
Bottom line, the music industry needs to get back to doing just good, orginal music.

@thestarr2003 She does sound forced at times. The way she's modulating with the mic is a tad annoying. Live performances can be "Iffy". Stage Monitoring and lack of rehearsal time, let alone an empty hall vs. A filled one and thousands of other variables come into play.

@BlkLion0726, It's EASY for anyone under the age of 50 to completely miss the fact that Donny was doing this work when some of the legends of REAL R&B were active (Motown/Stax). The fact that anyone remembers his music let alone acknowledges his immense talent and beautiful songs speaks volumes.
Aguilera has a flare. To anyone that grew up in the Black Church she's just another good singer. For industry execs she's a Godsend, a pretty face with ability. Whitney Houston will blow her doors off.
