  • when the world was a far better place...nice vid :)

  • My old human friends, definetely lost in the past. I don't know the isle of Wight, but your film moves the soul. thx from belgium

  • I was born in Ventnor, live in Canada now (over 35 years). It's a HEAP better here in Vancouver, British Columbia than in the US (US is just a horrific place) but still want to move to Ventnor again and get a job doing something meaningless that just pays the bills and lets me stay there. I'd miss BC's mountains and lakes, but the Downs was always a nice walk. Great vid, thanks for posting!

  • isle of wight attractions and lettings

  • You couldn't walk along in the middle of the road at Ventnor nowadays.

  • It is a very interesting movie, is a important historical trace life of this wonderful isle.

In the future, I hope to visit it and spend my holiday.

Greetings from Castellammare di Stabia - ITALY -

  • I have lived here since 2003 (orginally from London) and I have to say that I feel so lucky to be here. It is a remarkable island with so much history and grace. My two young daughters were born on the island and I hope they will grow to appriceiate the island as much as I do.

  • As it's railways were separate from the mainland, It's a shame they didn't keep steam trains on the IOW. It would have been a great tourist attraction. Mind you it's nice to ride the old 1938 tube stock...What will they replace them with..?? The old 1958 tube stock was compatable with the 38s, but they didn't buy any. Shame they didn't keep more track too.

  • Its So Hard To Believe It Was Once Like That...

  • could you tell me what warner's hotel Norton grange was called before it was a coastal resort?? there is a pic in the reception area saying the HMS manistee occupied it in 1944 but that ship was sunk in 1941 and there was no found survivors, it would really help as i am living here now and working at the hotel i am am interested in the history and cant find it anywhere,

    Kind Regards,

    Shane Mulligan

  • Cranmore (3:12) is unchanged to this day. Just shows you that some places are timeless. Thank you for this video, your effort is much appreciated.

  • Wonderful pictures. Thank you so much. They brought back so many happy memories of family holidays on the Island in the 30's. And the August weather was always gorgeous!

  • thanks for taking the time to put this on .

  • These time can never be found for the youth of my time. Sadly I will have to grow up in a vile era. Wish I could have lived during this time for me it was more precious then gold itself. Such a beautiful memory to have been collected.

  • I think this is a lovely film, and I do love the Isle. But In the words of my Father, born in 1927 "There are always problems, there was no golden age, it's an illusion."

  • Well then if not "gold"en age, Then I'll settle for second. The Silver lol.

  • I live on the island and i Love it. I have lived here my whole life and cant imagine living anywhere else but here. Driving over the downs always makes me feel happy, the sun, stretching fields and meadows its just perfect! but what i love is our own little language we speak, for instance "Your a gurt mallishag nipper" lol!

  • @xhappysmileyx Haha!! I remember island folk calling each other 'nipper' when I visited almost 30 yrs ago. Happy times. :¬)

  • @wordreet "nipper" is slang for kid, wee lad, youngun', etc. "Oi, nipper!" aka " Hey, ankle biter!" It's not just an island tern though, just Brit slang.

  • ooops- Not an Island 'tern' at all actually, that's a bleedin' seabird ! I meant Island "term".

  • @ozmedia Hahahahaha!

  • @ozmedia True, and it always was as far back as I can remember. But it was only on the island that I heard grown men calling each other nipper. Probably like "Our kid" further up north.

  • Whats the title of this Music track called ?

  • An amazing place, i visit every year and feel like i have gone home and home sick when i leave. I pray one day i will be able to return and stay forever. Perhaps in a previous life i came from this beautiful island. Cant wait for the next visit.

  • I too live on the big island but feel the same Birdiebin14 and visit as often as possible. How can I be homesick for somewhere I have never lived?

  • How totally awesomely beautiful.. and what makes it all the more special for me is that I live here! The music sang to my soul and the images remind me that no matter where I have travelled and lived in my life.. there is no place like home.. my soul is only ever happy here.. Thank you for sharing this xx

  • what an amazing work! it is an enchanted island and i loved live there for a year! =)

congrats and thanks for share it with us!

  • Birdiebin14 Perhaps you lived here in a previous life. Maybe you should look into your family tree, you may have had ancestors from here?

  • thanks - i'll look into it!

  • what A beautiful video. I live on the Island now. I worry about how over built it is starting to become. When I was a child, There were many fields and out door areas I would play in within town. It seems now there is very little. It may just be Cowes this is happening too, but with all these new estates housing mainland people, we will need more and more to house everyone. I loved the video it's a display of how the Island should look. It's still a beautiful place, especially in the summer :)

  • the clip 1:12 looks more like niton undercliff/blackgang

  • hello stucrabb, are you any relation to Alex Crabb? The son of John and loraine, Did you know he and his girlfriend live on the mainland now and have a lovely little girl, by the way brilliant video's, do you have any pics of Wootton?

  • Great vid, I've lived here all my life and the Islands a fantastic place!

  • I have lived here all of my life and only wish it was still a little more like this footage. The past looks like a place you would like to live.Fantastic.

  • You know that's an interesting thing - my Gran passed away last year aged 90, and she told me a lot about rural life on the IOW before the war (and before national health & welfare of course). By all accounts, it was a tough life, little money, harsh conditions, and people scratched out a living in service before tourism and industry.

  • My family were farm workers on the Island in previous generations and like you say times were tough, little money ,poor housing and health care limited to the old lady down the road who delivered the babies etc.But children could play outside in safety,no food additives and no pollution.I'm not sure everything has improved.

  • @stiggycow agree, too many chavs now

  • @600RRboyJay The island has a few chavs, but believe me, You are still miles behind the mainland in the amounts and attitude of the chavs here. Enjoy it now as it will only get worse in time. Sad state of the morals of lot of people nowadays. Here, there just seem to be workshy bums as opposed to violent gangs which, on the grand scale of things, isn't as bad as it could be.

  • Great footage Stuart, many thanks for posting it. Just After the Carisbrooke Castle shots there is a fleeting glimpse of Brighstone Church. Do you have any more of this footage ?

    regards Dave, Brighstone Resident

  • Thanks Stuart for this lovely item beautiful pictures and soundtrack

  • fantastic to watch, try to get over to the island as much as possible, not far from the mainland, but sure is a step back in time, i love the place, thanks stu for going to the time and trouble to show a great place

  • Gorgeous, made me home-sick for the island. I agree with everyone on the music, very beautiful. I learned to swim at Seaclose pool. Wouldn't it be lovely if time didn't hadn't moved on and the island was still like that.

  • Its wierd, because i liv on mainland ( lincoln to be precise ) and i ve spent my whole life wishing i was away on the island. I feel homesick for it aswell, even though i dont live there! I dont care about the attractions, i just feel that i belong there, its like - Calling me. I know, its wierd, but i even make myself physiccally sick if i think about going too much! we go in july, so only 137 days to go! ( yes im that sad! )

  • Not sad at all...its wonderful that you love it so much. The Island would be lucky to have you!

  • You are not sad. there is a very special energy here that you can feel in your soul.. It calls me when I go away and lifts my soul when I return.. it's a truly magical place.. come and live here!

  • Thanks Stuart for the fantastic footage & photo's. I grew up on the island in the 60's and have never seen any earlier footage. It's great. Thanks very very much. Friendly regards, Laura.

  • Thanks Laura! - I am glad it brought you pleasure :-)

  • That is quite beautiful.. I am a regualar visitor to the Island..

    Well done Stuart !

  • looks like happy (maybe better) times and what outstanding music......i live on the isle of wight and this vid is truly beautiful, put a lump in my throat.....i shall foward it to as many islanders as i can

  • This is so lovely, as someone else says. I come from Bournemouth; delivering Flapjacks and Cookies regularly, and I deliver to Orchards of Freshwater, and seeing it as it was years ago, as in your film, makes me feel quite humble, that up until now I have just called there without thinking of the history behind it, and the people gone before me. I'll give the pic of the shop to the owner, though I think he has seen this photo before. Lovely music too, Thanks, - Tony, from Bournemouth.

  • Very nice. Good job.

  • Thanks Stu. You can see what I mean, we walked the same footsteps. Who knows, in a hundred years time maybe people will appreciate my films too. Yours are stunning and thanks for the title of the music.

  • absolutely fabulous. the shop (post ofice) in freshwater loks almost the same today.

  • This is undoubtedly the nicest video I've ever seen. I go to the Isle of Wight every year for holidays and spent some of my childhood there. I love the music. What is it called?

  • Thank-you so much Angie! - I live in the USA now, but can never forget my wonderful roots!. The music is by Yanni! (check out Yanni Live at The Acropolis). Stuart

  • Thanks for that Stuart, I have added Yanni to my favourites. Amazing. If you would like to see the Isle of Wight now, I have four recent films in my profile. We seem to have trodden the same footsteps as your film. Hasn't changed too much thankfully.

  • This is so lovely!

  • dear old seaclose swimming pool i never e xpected to see aphoto of that thankyou.

  • Thank you for transporting me to another time and place! great music great video !

  • I do so much wish to go there and live for a while, I've done quite abit of reseach on the Isle, looking for jobs, maybe David Icke would let me come and be his handyman/land caretaker??

  • thanks stu, beautifully put together.very moving.i spent 2 yrs in ventnor back in the early 70s.the music you have chosen over parts 1,2,and 3 is superb.genius!!

  • omg!!!!! a very quick shot of seaclose swimming pool,i dont think ive ever seen any pics of that,i wish there was some film of it,i spent most of my childhood in that pool!!!

  • paticles1 ditto mate thoughout the fifties.i can still tastte the water!johnhayward

  • Hi john...I really wish sometimes i could just go back in time,so i could go to seaclose swimming pool again,in the 70's it became a heated pool and my dad used to look after the pumping heat/system they had, i used to go with him and watch him repair it,such really good memories for me as he passed away in 1992

  • Thans so much Vicky - that is a lovely compliment. I had a lot of fun making these - as I live in California, it's just a little way to remind myself of my roots. It's also been nice to see so many people enjoying them too! - I've had comments from ex-islanders all over the world!!

  • Well that unleashed a lot of tears. Touched a deep emotional nerve. A gentle time, slower, calmer ... one we all long for but seem caught by the speed of electronic nowness. Beautifully put together ... you should try and sell it ... I've made films for the BBC and ITV ... it's good. Incredible amount of research to find all that archive ... how did you do it! Well done and thank you - Vicky x

  • Wonderful! Dear old Oil 'a' Woight! The best place in the world. Fantastic old footage. Lovely to see all those dear places. Stucrabb, you did well. The music is lovely too.

  • What a great video, a big thank you for sharing it.

  • stucrabb - you say yanni made the song, and its from the album live! at the acropolis but what track is it?

    Regards

    Jim

  • Hi Jim

I think it's track 3 - Until the Last Moment...

  • Just to confirm that it is "Until The Last Moment". I managed to get it. Everytime I hear this track I can only think of the island.

  • That water fall in vent-nor still going after all those years, but slightly changed, another great old time vid..

  • This is truly amazing. I've never seen so much vintage material for the Island before. I very nearly shed a tear at the Newport pictures! How I wish I could go back in time and see the beauty myself...

  • Another truly special video. Thank you for sharing them.

  • Hi Tony

Glad you liked it - the music is by the Greek-American composer 'Yanni' (Live at the Acropolis).

  • Thanks for the two brilliant IOW videos. Nicely put together and good choice of music!

What was the music on this one BTW.

  • OMG Ghostly! tremendous effort, beautiful soundtrack, tears.....

  • Another treasure! Stuart, I have never seen such quality vintage film of the IOW. Hopefully copies of your videos already have a home there.

  • Thanks Kerry - I am so glad you enjoyed it. It was real fun putting it together. Stuart
