Mortimer Mouse was gonna to be Mickey Mouse's name. But Walt Disney's wife thought the name was too pompous and suggested the name Mickey instead, so "Mortimer" later became the name of Mickey's rival.

Plus he is the uncle of Minnie. So Mortimer is crossing the family line a bit too far. XD

Wait...trade Minnie as a type of Trophy? you could distinguish their hands from the rest of the body as both were black. During the era cartoons had no color.

The gloves were introduced in the black and white era of cartoons to help better distinguish Mickey's hands when they pass over his body
