I wonder what are the evolutionary implications of living in a resource rich environment. Your environment could determine how you evolve, like a feedback loop. Cities, for instance, provide a more stimulating environment which is conducive for a developing child in understanding the complexities of the world. Perhaps this idea may account for differences between Negroids and Caucasoid such as intellect, and health, and physical traits because they evolved in drastically different environments.
Specious reasoning. How can anyone say with absolute confidence the species we know today were easily domesticated thousands of years ago? Over generations of selective breeding these animals became the domesticated workers we know today. Wild horses are not tame by any means. I see no reason why zebras couldn't have been domesticated over time, they just weren't for whatever reason.

Women recive better grades because they are better generalists, meaning that they can more easily get a grip of the basics of tasks or subjects then men can. Men on the other hand can extend their talent further in a paticualr task or subject. To put it short, men outperform women in the task they are good at, women have a general grip on more subjects/tasks then men, that is why most of history's prodigys were men.

Jared is talking about a the beginning of ancient civilizations where migration did not exist ie (this is still during the tribal epoc of civilization). When a tribe gets bigger it turns into a town. If resources aren't limiting then a town can get larger and turn into a civilization. Some basics i learned in Anthropology class.
If that is the case, then once again most of Africa would be ideal area for the growth of an ancient civilization, due to it's abundance.
In that case, ancient civilizations had developed independently, so there was very little to no influx of knowledge at that stage. In that sense, Africa had no disadvantage.

I think you are mistaken about arablity in Sub Saharan Africa. Thick grasslands/jungle covers all of subsaharanAfrica. THere is potential for a lot of arable land but these forests/grasslands must be cleared first. From neolithic to modern day, slash and burn techniques were used for agriculture but the fields were useless after 1 crop. Like Jared mentioned. Domestication of animals was a very important step because it resulted in "recycling" land.
Domestication was very possible in Africa, and some scientists believe that it had occurred in Algeria the same time as in the Fertile Crescent. Where as Sub-Saharan Africa also domesticated cattle- something Mr Diamond doesn't seem to recognise.

Over generations of selective breeding these animals became the domesticated workers we know today. Wild horses are not tame by any means. Scientists dont know excacly the precise differences in the brains between a smart person and a stupid person, all they can do is to compare two selected individuals after making logical and fairly easy judgements on which individual is has many problem solving abilities and which individual doesent.

Women recive better grades because they are better generalists, meaning that they can more easily get a grip of the basics of tasks or subjects then men can. Men on the other hand can extend their talent further in a paticualr task or subject. To put it short, men outperform women in the task they are good at, women have a general grip on more subjects/tasks then men, that is why most of history's prodigys were men.

But in the roman empire for example women had decent rights and could get a decent education, many noble women were quite powerful. The celts also had almost conplete equality between the sexes. There's NO peer reviewed science that says blacks have on average an IQ 30 points lower - 30 points is a MASSIVE difference and doesn't tie in with anyone's experience of the average black person. Also, there's a growing amount of research that shows when you transplant a child from a tribal civilization that's a lot less advanced into a modern, westernised education program, it's not long before they're performing as well if not better than the white kids in it.

In my opinion Diamond has made an error.
The 14 domesticated herbivorous large mammals are indicative of the civilizations that built up around that environment. Not, that these 14 animals are the only prime animals to domesticate, and thus a lack of one of these animals means a civilization doesn't progress. South Africa for example, has prime conditions for the growth of a developed civilization, but yet one never formed.

They didn't have the access/influence from many cultures like the Middle East, Europe, or some of Asia did. South Africa did eventually have the Zulus, though in terms of technology they weren't the most advanced

Well the only reason one could say that South Africa is not well positioned for progress is because its people were from other civilizations, however the climate is ideal. Then again South Africa was not quite as isolated as people believe, Mr Diamond later shows this when he mentions the ancient city that had even make contact with India. Then again, in truth Africa, including SA has experienced huge movements and contact between civilizations.

Jared is talking about a the beginning of ancient civilizations where migration did not exist ie (this is still during the tribal epoc of civilization). When a tribe gets bigger it turns into a town. If resources aren't limiting then a town can get larger and turn into a civilization. Some basics i learned in Anthropology class.

In that case, ancient civilizations had developed independently, so there was very little to no influx of knowledge at that stage. In that sense, Africa had no disadvantage.

The only areas that were capable of growth were the coastal areas of the meditarrean sea, southern tip of South africa and nile river and the South eastern shore. The geographical barriers limited migration. Only area in Africa where civilization thrived was Egypt because of the Nile and Morocco.

Madagascar, (which is about as remote a place one can get in Africa) had experienced various waves of different ethnic settlements, including Bantu, Arab and even Indian people before the 14th century. I really don't see how only geographical reasons prevented Sub Saharan Africa from developing. Even before colonialism there has been a constant influx of different civilizations, and along with this the land is perfectly arable.Writing,numbers,science, all so close.

However, not because Africa was inaccessible, but rather because there was little point in making the journey, since Africa didn't have a real empire to trade/war with.
Had there already been an empire in Africa, as there was in the Far East, an African version of the Silk Road would have quickly been established.
Just the same way, no one would have wandered so far into Asia, if there wasn't already a developed civilization there.

I think you are mistaken about arablity in Sub Saharan Africa. Thick grasslands/jungle covers all of subsaharanAfrica. THere is potential for a lot of arable land but these forests/grasslands must be cleared first. From neolithic to modern day, slash and burn techniques were used for agriculture but the fields were useless after 1 crop. Like Jared mentioned. Domestication of animals was a very important step because it resulted in "recycling" land.

Domestication was very possible in Africa, and some scientists believe that it had occurred in Algeria the same time as in the Fertile Crescent. Where as Sub-Saharan Africa also domesticated cattle- something Mr Diamond doesn't seem to recognise.
Africa as a continent has a massively varying environment, and much of it is very fertile- along the lines of Spain I would say. Have you ever noticed that some of the best wine comes from South Africa?

Not alot of people migrated south mainly due to geological barriers IE jungle/grassland/deserts. Bantu people migrated there but i guess there weren't a huge population to start a real civilization. Bantu btw came from the grasslands.
Small % of africa is easily arable. Coastal areas of the north and south. Some parts of the east and thats about it.

Respond to this video... Africa was well equipped to handle large populations, look at the Great Zimbabwean ruins, up 18000 people may have been housed there. The growth of a developed civilization was very possible in Africa, and had almost taken place.
You can not use forestation as an excuse, since much of europe was covered in forests. Along with this, add sub zero temperatures.
I'm not sure what we're even debating about anymore to be honest.

I'm sure word would have spread if Elephants were useful in anyway beyond warfare. Africans domesticated both goats and cattle, if they could do that, how difficult would it be for them to domesticate Zebras? I'm sure they simply decided other options were more attractive. The reason I have a college degree today is because the state gave me food. If it weren't for that, I'd be seriously hindered from being productive or dead. It's quite simple- better food=higher intelligence, lower quality food=lower intelligence. Those poor Africans have had a deficient diet for millenia. It's too late now.

Diet has been found to factor 5-10 IQ points
In the new book "The Evolution of Racial Differences in Intelligence" Dr Richard Lynn (Harvard/Berkley/Ulster) goes into this research. Scientists have found that if we give Black Africans a perfect diet we can increase their IQs from the 60 range up to the 70 Range.
Research on Genetics twins has shown clearly though that there are LARGE RACIAL DIFFERENCES IN BRAIN SIZE/IQ and its GENETIC its NOT "diet"

@Ooloosoon The point is NOT giving them anything. The point that these videos present is that the geographical advantages that enabled the White European societies to prosper were never possible in Africa. It makes logical sense to assume that the more you have to begin with, the more you will make out of it. If you have nothing to begin, you will get nothing out of it.

@josecitomadera Therefore, it doesn't matte how intelligent you are, if your environment does not give you the raw materials to create a technologically advanced society, you will never produce one unless you believe in magic and such nonsense. But, I see where you are coming from. You want to present the view not accepted in any major university I've heard of that race matters and it determines intelligence.

MOST "Europeans" did NOT COME FROM EUROPE
yet another MAJOR ISSUE that Mr Diamond TOTALLY MISSES/IGNORES the fact is that Europe is NOT "great place to start a Civilziation" it was a FROZEN HELL ON EARTH and nobody could even live there until almost Historical times
The Soil is Europe sucks its mostly clay and as every highschool kids knows the region could not even be farmed until the early middle ages when the "European plow" was invented (the "expert" Mr Diamond missed that also?)

@Ooloosoon Of course when it comes to race, the debates turn ugly. Have the last word at this. I know what I want out of my life and am moving in that direction. Nobody is above criticism, neither Diamond nor the authors you cited and the research you stated. No research, no book, no theory is conclusive. Everything is open to criticism. Once you push a position as infallible, then you've entered into dogma and religion something I don't care for.

When we look at the subject of both Racial tests and the work thats been going on with Genetic twins we see that over and over and over again...the research shows that the vast majority of the Racial differences in intelligence is based on the Genetic Differences not Culture
Genetic twins who grow up in different environments still end up with the same IQ

@Ooloosoon I think the point he makes is factual. Even your twin example follows Diamond's reason. Let's state as a fact your point that the twin placed in New Guinea is a genius. His genius is corralled into the poor environment in which he was born. If the land does not give you any materials with which to express your potential absolutely, then the natural environmental constraints will not allow your genius to flourish.
