I think you'll find that a lot of metal musicians were originally classically trained, or at least listen to a lot of classical music. On the surface metal and classical seem pretty far removed, but classical music tends to hold some pretty brilliant examples of composition, the theory of which is applicable across many genres. I'm not saying this applies specifically to Serj, just pointing out that classical and metal are similar in as many ways as they are different.
