Well, you really don't have to. I mean I don't always play the right notes of the chord I sometimes play A right before I hit Ab. You know what I mean? I'm still learning, though.
I mean, I sometimes throw in a chromatic here and there. And by that I think he meant that you don't have to use exclusively harmonic intervals. Which is true.
