  • Am i the only one thinking it's a little sloppy not to bother spelling this mans name with capital letters?

  • eatin' some food, learning about cuba

  • 03:02 -03:04 priceless. As part of ( by American press) demonized nation, love him for pointing that out, exposing himself against the mainstream. He is honest, brave thinking man.

  • Exactly.

  • Milk was an uninspiring greedfest whose point was to do nothing more than accumulate money. Penn meeting with Castro and Chavez demonstrates how little he knows about the social slavery of people in those countries. It is no surprise he elects not to live in those places.

  • أحلى شئ ردة فعل الجمهور يوم عرفوا إنهم أنقتلوا ..ههههه

    .

مع التحية / أبو قاتل عدو الكل ..

  • When I saw Milk I cried, and I loved Sean Penn. When I watched this, and watched him defend Chavez, a man who has killed my own country, I don't care for him. Ignorant piece of shit.

  • i bet you arnt kissing obama's ass now...........

  • @use2slam2 1. Chavez is not a communist, but a democratic-socialist (a radical one tho). 2. Chavez being considered an enemy of the USA is irrelevant, anyone can make up their own minds about who he thinks is right or wrong. The McCarthy days are over. 3. If you don't want to make him rich, don't go see his movies. 4. Chavez is under criticism all the time by the opposition of Venezuela, and Chavez doesn't have the kind of power to control that at all.

  • you know what at least Harvey had enough guts to stand up for who he is. STOP HIDING IN THE CLOSETmen who pose as men during the day and a freak aleek at night

  • to cq---whateva , First of all u dun have a clue next i am sweet as cake maybe brown suger. i can say that iam a woman

  • The only problem is Harvey wasn't as Gay as sean Penn!

  • he always talks as if his throat is dry.

  • please stop comparing African Americans to homosexuals . You are not born gay , as you grow in your enviroment you eventually pick those a habits and behaviors which alters your sexual orientation. african americans fought to be equal and was discriminated against their own skin pigment that ..get it straight

  • @KKSweetcakes You just don't have a clue, do you? Poor sad sack with a posting name that makes you look like you're peddling sex on the internet....

  • @cqsallie aint nobody a sad sack but you for even responded. i think u dun have a clue

  • @KKSweetcakes that is a ridiculous statement.

  • @KKSweetcakes Then how can a boy, who's brought up in the strickest most conservative, free thought smashing society be gay. Go talk to a doctor who actually knows what he's talking about and you'll never be saying that again, why would you say something you don't know a fucking thing about? But okay, let's say your right. Why should'nt they have the same rights? What a fucking moronic, inhuman statement.

  • @BrixSnBs first of all Iam not talking about human rights. you are talking in general. We are all human I hope! iam saying gay and lesbians are people who date or marry the same sex, that my friend is your sexual orientations. They should have rights they are still human. But imagine a African American male who already is being discriminated against his color of his skin but now his sexual orientation he is just going to have it bad in the world. No woonder they are scared to come outta he closet

  • What he says about lack of human curiosity, I couldn't agree more with. I can't even begin to explain how frustrated I get with friends, etc. who have never heard of this, that or the other and don't have the curiosity to look it up. Google is my god. I'm so curious about the world and always want to absorb more and more knowledge. It's so tragic that people can live in blissful ignorance.

  • @cezzie901 Amen to that

  • RIP Harvey Milk

  • Dennis Kucinich rules. Sean Penn rules.

  • His story is a univeral one of acknowledging and understanding the barbaric lengths some go to to deceive in the arrogant likihood (not even hope ) they can hyjack resources that are finite and keep them for .....themselvs. Its as tribal as that...and lets face it 911 was a slamdunk for just those reasons. Cheneys at odds with his Transport Secretary on the morning of....and acknowledged on the Offical Commission report...And no one seems to care...Stop sleep walking through this America

  • I like his passion, but there's a thin line between passion and foolhardiness. Be careful with your message Mr. Penn, you have a larger audience than most could ever hope for, don't waste it with mindless rants.

  • Sean Penn, love u

  • @VATAN2000

Such an inspirational human being to

    He means alot to me

  • he is a dictators wet dream.. if you are evil and kill millions of people and are against the U.S. this guy will give you a blowjob.

He is interesred in anybody who is the enemy of the U.S.,, period.. What a giant headed- ego maniac fuckhead...

  • Hugo Chavez is evil and kill millions of people?

Where do you get your info? Fox News...

  • @wcci1224 a dictators wet dream., u SAY,.. UR a fucking DICK HEAD!!!!

Last time I checked out Dictators, they were mostly made in the USA!!

I know this is a waste, but, check out Pinochet of Chile, Duvalier's Haiti, Batista-Cuba, Shaw of Iran, & there r tons more, ALL, employed by the USA, so as to have FREE access to all resources, including enslaving the people.

People like Chavez, have freed their people from Bastards like the USA Corporations. But YR so fucking DUMB, U CAN'T UNDERSTAND

  • sean penn is a moron

  • smart man! Very well articulate. Respect to Sean Penn.

We need guys like him in politics.

  • Our greatest living actor, no doubt. He's been in Haiti for weeks walking the walk.

  • I always wished that he and Madonna would have lasted. But she had a craving for the limelight and didn't respect his need to get out of it. But they've both grown a lot, are careful with their words, actions and would be a good team today.

  • I liked this douchebag better when he was beating up Madonna..

  • Human Rights Organization AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL condemns Chavez for his human rights atrocities. They are NOT Media. Both Left and Right Wing political organizations know Chavez as a Totalitarian Dictator. Penn has become a Rube for Dictators... throw him some disinformation and he bites hook line and sinker.

  • Remember when Sean paddled around New Orleans looking for people to "save"?

His little boat was just big enough for him and his 5 man camera crew.

    Hilarious!!

  • Has Penn ever really read about the rest of the world? His ignorance is stupifying....maybe he should read about the atrocities of the Cuban government or the fact they haven't had an election in over 50 years, or a free press or freedom of speech...maybe he should read about what is done to gays in Cuba and worry less about what Sarah Palin is reading. He is tired and he's a typical vacuous Hollywood airhead.

  • chrisizq, Sean Penn is a damn idiot.

  • boogalou2003, words of wisdom my friend...he's a joke who takes himself very seriously. I was sort of suprised that Charlie Rose, usually an honest liberal, didn't challenge him....if you have the time look at how he challenged Michael Crichton for simply questioning the global warming doomsayers.

  • People like you think you know everything. You read a book or 2 and think you have a grasp on whats really going on. Im not as bleeding of a heart as Mr Penn but ill bet you have never been anywhere in the world outside of the internet or books. If I had not traveled myself around the world Id think that Sean Penn was a wack job, but more and more the wack jobs are people like you.

  • @muderface74, What have u learned? Cohersion works and freedom doesn't? Don't you want to make your own decisions and be the author of your own life? I beleive in the individual, not the state. And its funny u should mention that I haven't traveled, I'm in Lima, Peru at this very moment and I've been to over 23 countries. But simply visiting another country does not in of itself give you wisdom, you're living proof of that.

  • Haha, unfortunately for you i am more well read on fact, and your poorly articulated fabrications do not impress me. As i said, you are unable to produce any ACTUAL FACTUAL information of 'atrocity'. All you can do is speculate about people who die and eat feces, and your fictitious cuban father being shot. You are full of shit, and so is your argument.

  • @oxBUSHIDOxo (I am more well read on fact,..) Waw, I never knew being pretentious makes us knowledgeable. You're just rambling and you're blowing things out of proportions. Sean is emphasizing how American's Media and hence Americans are prejudiced. And it is a fact. Unlike you, he knows what he's talking about. You (Bush-I-do) conservative pissed off redneck go read some Nazis stories away.

  • @chuckyli101 - You can't be to talking to me? Have you read anything i have said? Bush i do conservative? Clearly the man who is defending the Cuban Castro-regime human rights record is the "pissed off redneck". You are so well read to make that connection!

  • Perhaps you should put down your bias and pick up a book, because your ignorance is "stupifying"(which you spelled incorrectly). Two different systems of 'government', so they are not comparable. Second of all, you can not name one Cuban "atrocity". The only atrocity in Cuban history was removed when Fidel Castro overthrew the government.

  • @oxbushi You're right I can't name only 1 atrocity, I can name thousands. Want examples? How about the thousands who have died making the trip to the US on makeshift rafts or have been shot at like my father. How about no freedom of press? How about not one authentic election in over 50 years. How about jailing political dissidents, left to eat their own feces. Funding leftist terrorism, extreme poverty, the breakup of the Cuban family, the secret police, only 1 political party and state murder.

  • @jun7per : I'm only interested in Sean Penn as an artist, as is, I would imagine, the majority of his admirers and lovers of film everywhere...His personal life is none of our business, and has nothing to do with his quality as a an actor. The WORK of an artist is all we should be interested in...If his marriage is in trouble, well , I'm sure he'll work it out...it shouldn't affect you or us..get a life.

  • sean penn is the new marlon brando

legendary actor and one of the most intelligent persons living!

  • Danneto give a brake, do you think that Sean is very intelligent? That mother fucker hate this country and love the regimen of Cuba and Venezuela. I think so that you are the most ignorant person in the world.

  • Sean is a good actor but only in some parts.

Sean really needs mental help. He really let his wife and kids down....Not an honest man when it comes to marriage.

  • @jun7per

True, but we can't help him

  • june7 of course he need a big mental help.

  • At least Castro and his Communist Cuba wasn't as fucked up as Bush / Cheney with America.

  • You have obviously NEVER been to Cuba. What an ignorant statement.

  • He can also be a typical european - interested what is going on in the world - realistic forward views and a progress man.

untypical for the most of the americans especially in the interior.

  • I personally don't discriminate or express prejudice views upon the homosexual community. I respectively admire Sean Penn for his astounding talent as an actor and should stick to that profession then becoming involved in the grotesque world of politics. Gus Van Sant is a homosexual, yet he's one of the most inspirational filmmakers to me personally. Yes, his films possess homosexuality. But that's okay. I just don't want people attacking my personal moral and civil traditional values.

  • I was hoping that in this specific interview Penn was going to express the sheer inspirational joy, and pleasure to with with a filmmaker like Gus Van Sant. To elaborate on the significant impact that Harvey Milk made upon the gay/homosexual community. He provides commentary regarding his views politically but fails to elaborate and clarify on some of the statements he's made. To compare Milk to MLK Jr. however is absurd.

  • Listen more closely. On the specific, narrow basis for comparison that he's making, he's right: both said things that were extremely threatening to some folks at the time, and sadly, remain so for far too many.

  • "Milk" in my opinion ranks to be the 4th best film of 2008 (tied with Ron Howard's "Frost/Nixon"); Gus Van Sant ranks from my perception to be one of the greatest American filmmakers of all time. Sean Penn did indeed deliver an OSCAR worthy performance, but Mickey Rourke rightfully deserved the Best Actor award for Darren Aronofsky's "The Wrestler". I'm straight, conservative and generally throughout the majority of the film my homophobic tendencies made me cringe through some scenes.

  • feinstein war profiteer

  • I watched Milk, its hilarious to see Sean Penn gaying all the way up, especially after just having finished watching Mystic River few hours earlier..I found myself fast forwarding the heavy gay scenes...but after watching it you realized Micky Rourke could have never topped that..

  • highly talented actor. I don't agree with his politics though

  • Blogger Seized From Streets of Havana, Beaten, Released.....was Sean Penn in on the beating???? since Penn loves Fidel Castro and Communism

  • he's a hell of an actor... but he sure ain't smart - can't get a straight sentence out.. disappointing! and wanting charlie rose to ask him about cuba, whoa..

  • he might be nervous and wants to express himself as accurate as possible and need to think a little extra and for the record, charlie rose wanted to ask him about cuba, not the other way around!

  • weak

  • this guy is a great actor...talk about not planning ahead...

  • Sean Penn is definitely one of the best actors ever

  • @blondetrouble1

    i agree 100%

  • @blondetrouble1 i so agree!!!

  • i wish obama would stop pandering to republicans and give the homosexuals equal rights, like lyndon johnson did for the afrcan americans in the 60s. True Change can only occur from the federal government.

  • @lovergurlz10001

homosexuals already have equal rights. Imagine, you can't marry a guy if you are a guy, I can't marry a guy and I'm a guy, so we do have EQUAL rights.

  • @lovergurlz10001 true change has nothing to do with the fed. grass routes. A tree grow from the ground

  • @timmaothy not true grassroots can urge the fed government to change their policies but only the government has the power to change the laws.

  • @lovergurlz10001 It was the republican congress in the 1960s that passed the Civil Rights bill in the face of democrat opposition.

  • Your deep, profound, insightful response to all the bullcrap Washington does is to "visit" - as if they would be sickened patients at a hospital- fucking liars and demagogues that are just as equals as Bush. But you all fall into this imbecillity of envisioning friends in the "other side".

You are defending fanatic protestants from fanatic catholics, and you think they are different, pile of imbicile boyscouts. And that little tone of "awarence" you spread - Oh boy! how sad...

  • wtf is penn talking about? i think penn is crazy. he should stick to acting and not hanging with dictators like chavez.

  • Chavez was elected.

  • So was Hitler.

  • He still is not a dicator as you wrongly claimed.

  • Perhaps, but being elected (and even popularly supported) doesn't necessarily mean your aren't a dictator.

  • bush was appointed

  • Actors get so snobbish they say and talk things they dont even udnerstand..Penn basically said nothing, he only said they fabricate demons and manipulate the media..i would love to hear him try to explain these things without someone writing a biased script for him..ai hate the fact how actor's ignorance, arrogance, and great acting skills make them go out and say stupid things which they believe is true without proper information and proper research..worst are people that believe them

  • ...and so you and everyone on youtube have done the research and have been given the proper information? no you just feed on the same bullshit the govt and the media like mothers milk. damn if hes an actor, damn if he doesnt know the whole truth no one does and even if no two people interpret it the same, at least, hes speaking out, at least hes devoting his time to something more than just complaining, at least hes fucking trying to say all americans havent tapped out and wallow in complaceny.

  • first of all, what gives you the right to say all of those things? What makes you think its only for americans? Thats why everyone then says americans are ignorant bc of people like you. That whole governmet crap you talk about only idiots like you buy it, why dont you read more articles and newspapers from different sources instead of coming here and saying hes not wasting his time when hes clearly just talking shit without undersanding wtf hes trying to talking about..

  • what gives me the right? last i checked i was still breathing. thats my right. i dont listen to half the shit the media or the govt spew. everyones ignorant in some respect its just reality because no one knows everything i dont care how many newspapers you subscribe to. i didnt say anything was only for americans, cleary though sean penn is a what? american so where many americans draw a blind eye to whats going on in america and abroad its nice to see someone who still has a voice.

  • and while sean may not be right about everything hes not wrong about everything either. frankly i dont put all my hope in sean penn or what he has to say im just admiring his courage. obviously you didnt get that from my statement, that much you are IGNORANT of, but its cool. and youre right, its beyond america theres people all over the world who have a lot to criticize and condemn but they dont have the balls to get off their ass and make the change.

  • and in closing, the world will always have something to say about america, doesnt bother me, all i know is ive got friends from all over and they know the quality of my character and the sincerity of my heart so the world that dont know shit about me or america can keep talking, like i say ignorance is the ocean that divides us. we all swim in it but few ever cross it to get a real clue. youll wait for whats to come of things and ill be waiting with you. oh and peace be on ya! :)

  • honestly everything you said i dont see what the actual purpose of it was..but your final words youre right i dont know i should disrespect you if i dont know you ok..but at the same time you think what you said gives sean penn the right to just say anything bc of courage??? thats if i would say youre a fucking idiot..(bc of my courage you should respect me for talking shit bout someone?)Not for me..facts over "courage"

  • the reality is you take what he says one way and someone else takes it another, where it may annoy you, it may inspire someone else, thats what i admire. if he did nothing, said nothing, thats a lot of people who would have nothing to talk about and be annoyed with or inspired to do or say something. and sure if you came to my house and called me a fucking idiot i would admire that courage. but to say it here theres nothing admirable about it. but anyway, im glad we agree on something. peace.

  • what im saying is that what were talking about now is addressing an issue that celebrities get involved in things that they perhaps should stay out of but they are people to and they can speak if they want. the question should be what are you willing to sacrifice to see people like sean penn silenced and not taken so seriously by media? and thats my last word. good luck. chin up. smiles.

  • Lukinioo7,

You are happy that gay marrige is still banned. What is that you are afraid of? My partner and I have been together for 3 years and have a great relationship. We are even monagomous-so far ha ha!

Marrige is a right for all americans, not just boring straight people.

  • The Cuban people suffer dire poverty, exausting oppression, and a corrupt govermant that still jails Cubans who express anti-dictatorship,pro democracy views . I have not heard 1 Cuban American speak positively about Che Guevara,or Fidel because many of there parents were persecuted in the 60`s by the "Revolution".

Unless your forefathers spilled blood in Cuba,or you have suffered, you have no right to embrace these goverments or new dictators like chavez. Shame on him.

  • Well done Sean!

  • I love Sean Penn!!!! I agree with him on everything! He's amazing and I encourage and applaud his curiosity! I was moved to tears when he said: "we can't give up a word to save that kid's life?"

  • I feel the same way about babies about to be aborted - er, killed.

  • Why doesn't Penn go to Cuba and this time remain there permanently. Then, criticize the government on a daily basis. I wonder what would happen to him? Or, do the same in Venezuela. Laslty, I am so glad that the California Supreme Court upheld the peoples democratic vote on gay marriage! Penn is a high school drop-out and it shows!

  • but smarter than u dumbass. u dont have to go to school to be intellectual

and smart. einstein did it and many people did it. einstein droped at 3rd grade

  • Your ad hominem says it all! What an oxymoronic statement you made. Einstein had a P.h.D. thats why he was addressed as "Dr. Albert Einstein."

  • ur a fucking ediot he got his phd based on fuckin 3rd grade level of study background because that was the last thing he did befor he went to colleage dumbasssssssss

  • I see that you do not know how to read. Your choice of verbiage is not surprising. Are you under the age of 18? You must come from a place that has a high rate of illiteracy! Learn to verbalize and you will be taken seriously. As of right now buffoonery is all that comes to mind!

  • His deep, curious and skeptic insight goes as short as defending the ones Washington demonizes. Chavez TV does exactly that same polarizing, histerical bullcrap Fox News does.

Chavez is a liar and shameless cheater just as Bush and none of these well intended people realizes. But they want to "understand the difference". The "others". What a sad way of being good. His outrage at Bush, therefore, becomes pathetic and imbecile. Stalin talks about freedom against the Nazis. Learn something, Penn.

  • If you believe this high school dropout has any insight about anything you MUST work on raising your I.Q.!

  • he WEPT all the way through the

  • Really, I wonder if the 3000 people who died on September 11 would feel that way..

  • tell that to japan in ww2...

    btw america was WRONG!

  • Just because he's famous it doesn't mean he should be apathetic and ignorant to the world.

  • get real please

  • Sure, he is an actor, but he's human as well. Why should his profession stop him from taking part in world issues? He went to Venezuela as a journalist, just as he went to Iraq and Cuba. He is a very intelligent man who has just as much of a take part as anyone else.

(And also, I'm neither Democrat nor Republican -- merely a concerned citizen.)

  • hear hear -- i was gonna respond, but you expressed it perfectly -- and yo,if you dig sean penn, you should check out 'the assasination of richard nixon' -- i just saw it yesterday, and it's another amazing sean penn performance -- peace

  • I love this man! A fine actor and and wonderful human being :)

  • I love Sean Penn as an actor but I've been trying to understand his contradiction deffending gay rights and at the same time supporting comunism in cuba, for example, where a gay can't talk about his sexual orientation...

  • I think alot of people who subscribe to the "theoritical" belief about communism really think its the best political system in the world....but the prob is just that...in theory sounds good, but as has been shown time and time again....in practice communism doesnt work...I love sean penn but dont agree with him when it comes to communism....

  • Penn's the man

  • Congrats to Sean Penn for his second Oscar for "Milk"-well deserved!

  • I've heard Penn is a shoo-in to win the oscar for this. Yet another example of Leftists (hollywood in this case) rewarding people for taking Politically Correct positions.

Maybe Penn can gain 50 pounds and do a portrayal of Huge Chavez. They could call it "PIggo" (a play on Moore's Sicko). I'm sure Sean would win not only an Oscar but a Nobel prize.

Or maybe he could grow a beard and portray Castro...call it "Whacko".

  • i couldn't say it better myself.we think the same

  • haha...agreeed

  • Sean is simply amazing. I love that he can both act extraordinarily and stil keep up with the issues and conflicts of current society.

  • And the U.S. has nukes pointed at how many countries? How many countries has Castro bombed recently? The U.S. is much more dangerous than Cuba.

  • well i hope u don't live in the usa since we are such a dangerous country

  • Venezuela - not Argentina :)

  • lena: Oops! Yes, it's venezuela.

  • i watched the movie. sean penn is extraordinary.

  • Great movie, Penn gives the best performance of the year,

  • Yep. I love Mickey Rourke, but when an actor transforms themselves so completely that you forget who you're watching, it's such an incredible feat.

  • you go, Sean|! I'm so happy for him

  • "AWESOME,TOTALLY AWESOME"

  • How is making marriage legal going to stop "that kid from hanging himself"? I see his point, but issue of intolerance is so much deeper than that. I don't think young homosexuals are killing themselves because somewhere down the line they can't get married.

  • Comment removed

  • Perhaps it's a the symbol of hatred that marriage discrimination represents for them that drives them to end their lives.

  • MILK is one of the most profound movies in the last decade. Human rights for all are coming, progress is happening. God bless us all.

  • Equality will happen! :)

  • such a lovely movie

  • man, that was short. he didnt even talk about the film... all politics!.. he should run for office not some TERMENETOR

  • I hate the way Charlie Rose interviews. Still, thank you very much for posting this.

  • god, he's such a fantastic actor!

  • "We can't give up a word to save a kid's life?"

    Wonderfully worded.

  • i wonder what sean penn thinks about the concentration camps for gays that fidel castro had in cuba in the '70s. they were called "unidades militares en ayuda de produccion" and if you were gay, you were sent there to be made straight.

anyway, penn was fantastic as milk.

  • he def is not perfect when it comes to marxism....its ironic if he were in a marxist society he may not be where he is today....but I love the guy ,,,,his heart goes deep....I just wish he would drop his belief in marxism

  • First of all, if you think Venezuela is a Marxist country, you are very much mistaken. Besides, meeting Fidel Castro doesn't make you communist. I don't doubt this guy Sean Penn is far left, but in our sense of the word.

  • nobody said anything about venezuela being anything...I was commenting on sean penn and what he has noted that he believes....

  • He is not a communist, get over yourself

  • sean penn is an intelligent man. too bad more people are not as self aware as he is.

  • great interview
