Look at a mx5 with a Flyin Miata kit. 100hp stock Flyin Miata a safe 280hp think about it 280whp in a 2300lbs car. With a factory Torsen posi unit. Great great car.
My uncle just bought a new MX5. He took me for a ride. More than 100 MPH with roof down on some small roads with (in my opinion...) too sharp turns.
GOD, that was awesome!
And it stays relatively warm inside the car (with roof down) in relatively cold weather. My uncle also told me you can drive with the roof down if it's not raining too heavily, getting almost no rain inside the car. Good job, engineers designing the shape of the car!
I drive it almost daily , but first generation. Itis warm even with roof down just use warm air vents properly. Same if you need AC in summer. And yes you do not get rain inside when you drive in light to medium rain above certain speed, but you need to have windblocker as water and air comes from the back (!) not from the front due to turbulences. If still want to know what you can do with MX-5 then find here my vdeo by my name maciekskontakt ;)
@ExpressJapan but it wasnt such a big gap that they were not comparable in atleast a value sense, it wouldnt have been like comparing the value of an mx5 to a 458
The original MX-5 was released in 1989, not 1990. And it weighed just under 1000 kg. At least my Australian version did. But I think the clip's version had a 1.8 whereas mine had a 1.6 which was slower but sounded better.
@benbay001 Speed is the problem. Slide off the track into soft turf and it's easy to go over if a rim digs in. Passengers in the same seat have died from just their heads knocking together in a multi flip rollover. The fact they are not wearing helmets is more of a reflection that the common moke in England cannot retain an effective lawyer to sue. No risk of lawsuit from the meat = No requirement from the production company to wear helmets. Fucking ignorant!
they really should've put it up against an NB it looks like they were driving an early 90's NA and without ABS, power steering, LSD, and a 1.6 liter engine, it's not much of a shoot out.
@9ballprodigy I donno, the shootout kind of made me think I'd get an NA or NB instead of an NC if I moved somewhere that I could practically own a car again.
NA all day. Mine weighs 900kg with 155whp. You can't beat manual everything. If you like driving and are not rich, the MX-5 is simply the most perfect automobile on the planet.
The MX-5 is such a beautiful car. Amazing piece of engineering that makes for such a well balanced and handled car which, in my opinion, is far more important the power. It's the prime example of the fact that more horsepower doesn't always mean more fun.
In any case, I think that car would be a lot more fun with better supporting bucket seats. :]
Was the NA a 1.6 or 1.8? I love my 1.8 Harvard. It's power to weight ratio gets better every day through a combination of the wheelarches rusting and the hood disintegrating. What an amazing chassis and engine though...
I test drove an NA Miata without power steering once. There was a lot more effort required obviously when you were parked, but once you got it moving, the steering feel was excellent.
@ilovecats748 It was a very light car, the only time you feel you p/s is missing is when the car is completely stationary. Once rolling, and especially going around the bends, you'll be so glad it doesn't have power steering nor airbag.
@JoeyJIL If you don't latch it down all the way. The car isn't perfectly rigid, so the twisting of the car in a corner could cause an improperly latched top to pop loose.
I've not had mine fly up like that, but I have had it pop free on one side when I didn't get it latched properly.
I mean it's ok if you want to yank the steering around like a lunatic while you're on the move, but please don't turn the wheel when you're stopped! bloody 'ell. ! LOL
At my local MX-5 owners club we have Mk1, Mk2 Mk2.5 and Mk3 owners, they all say the Mk 1 is so much better to drive than all the others, what really makes me laugh is the snobbery of the fokls who genuinely think that UK supplied Mk1s are so much more valuble and desirable than the High-spec Jap import original Eunos Roadster, my cheap Jap version has a/c, elec windows, power steering, limited slip diff, better gear ratios,130bhp, leather interior etc and all can be had for less than £1500 ha!!
5th gear editors should be shot, there is a total mix-up of footage between the NA and NC, she spins the NC but straight after the NA drives off. Also the passenger seat footage supposedly in the NA is from the NC, look at the door handles and centre cubby.
i think they would be about even if the other older mx-5 had the same tires as the new one. i doubt that the lady who owned it put sport tires on it.. which would make a big difference

my dad own a 1989 miata, it has 200 000km on the clock and it has been trashed by him and me and it appart from routine maintenance, it still works superbly (consider that it still has the original suspension and clutch) and every car maker should look at this car as a benchmark for steering and shifting feel, it really feels as if the car is the extension of my body, sure it's not fast but it will put a smile on your face if you drive it
Hey, has anyone else noticed that when Susanne and Vicki are in Susanne's car which is a MK1 miata, it shows a MK3 Miata interior? I found this weird. Unless, they shot them in the MK3 first, because at 1:22 that is a MK3 doorskin in the shot.
Threir not in a MK2 though, their supposed to be in a MK1. I know a person that owns a MK1 Miata, and the interior in it looks nothing like the what is shown in the shot a 1:22. This is inconsistant with what car they show them pulling away in, which is the MK1, unless to for some reason they had different MK1 interiors from what we got here in the states. Either way I don't care, as I don't like Miata really at all, I think there for hairdressers, ladies, and the elderly who like small under

This okay and everything; But you should see my AWESOME CIVIC!!! With me driving it is the Chuck Norris of all cars!!! Why you ask? Because I am so FREEKING AWESOME! AND SINCE I AM THE MOST HUMBLE PERSON I KNOW; I SHOULD GET A TROPHY!!!!
Despite that, nothing beats a Miata for dollar-to-fun factor. Motor Trend Magazine Best Driver's Car comparison for '09, where Miata came in 2nd place for best handling car, only beaten by the Porsche Cayman. (Audi R8 very close 3rd) Dang respectable for the "cheap" car in a field of 10 pricey competitors.
BTW, Camaro scored dead last, rated as a very poor sportscar. Corvette rated quite bad too. Way to go GM. No wonder you're bankrupt.
Do you mean "how can she NOT turn the wheel while the car is stationary?"
Have you ever driven a car without power-assisted steering? It's hard to turn the steering wheel when the car isn't moving, because it's you doing all the work.
I think icefox means "why is she turning the unassisted steering wheel while the car is stationary", because it's possible to bend the steering column from needing to push so hard.
Without power steering, you should only turn the steering wheel when the car is moving.
You do realize that the steering columns on cars tend to be rather strong metal, right?
The steering WHEEL will deform long before the column. (And, the wheel is designed to deform, the column isn't.)
Also, there's plenty of situations where you must turn the wheel when not moving... (And, I will note that I have owned two very front-heavy (diesel VW) manual steering cars. Turned the wheel when stationary often, never did anything like bend the steering column.)
Ok, it's something i was told i shouldn't do, but i guess it comes from some people not wanting to risk their treasured classic. Or something.
I found it pretty easy to adapt to not turning unassisted steering unless moving, but it's been a while since i've driven without power steering. What are some of the situations where you must turn the wheel while not moving?
The most obvious I can think of... parallel parking. You'll want to turn your wheels into the curb (in case for whatever reason your car moves,) and more importantly, turn them away from the curb to pull out.
You can still parallel park without forcing the wheel while the car is stationary; creeping the car even slightly is enough to unload the steering. It's not too hard, even with a manual transmission.
apparently you don't know much about car -- turning the wheel while car is stationary may damage the car. Now everyone is driving power-steering and automatic transmission that they hardly know what a gear is.
Turning while standing puts unnecessary stress to tyres and whole steering mechanism, no matter whether it's power assisted or not and is a general sign of sloppy and cumbersome driver. Maybe some basic driving lesson would help you?
no rival...what about the mr2 roadster? :S

A new(ish) mk3 ST will happily sit outside in all weathers but if i had a mk1/eunos then i'd want a garage.
Mk1s don't have PAS but the imported Eunos does.

Not even remotely close in price or horsepower.

How can she turn the wheel while the car is stationary?!!! And she calls herself professional?
icefox1983 2 years ago
Do you mean "how can she NOT turn the wheel while the car is stationary?"
Have you ever driven a car without power-assisted steering? It's hard to turn the steering wheel when the car isn't moving, because it's you doing all the work.
bhtooefr 2 years ago
I think icefox means "why is she turning the unassisted steering wheel while the car is stationary", because it's possible to bend the steering column from needing to push so hard.
Without power steering, you should only turn the steering wheel when the car is moving.
onerandomfellow 2 years ago
You do realize that the steering columns on cars tend to be rather strong metal, right?
The steering WHEEL will deform long before the column. (And, the wheel is designed to deform, the column isn't.)
Also, there's plenty of situations where you must turn the wheel when not moving... (And, I will note that I have owned two very front-heavy (diesel VW) manual steering cars. Turned the wheel when stationary often, never did anything like bend the steering column.)
bhtooefr 2 years ago
Ok, it's something i was told i shouldn't do, but i guess it comes from some people not wanting to risk their treasured classic. Or something.
I found it pretty easy to adapt to not turning unassisted steering unless moving, but it's been a while since i've driven without power steering. What are some of the situations where you must turn the wheel while not moving?
onerandomfellow 2 years ago
The most obvious I can think of... parallel parking. You'll want to turn your wheels into the curb (in case for whatever reason your car moves,) and more importantly, turn them away from the curb to pull out.
bhtooefr 2 years ago
You can still parallel park without forcing the wheel while the car is stationary; creeping the car even slightly is enough to unload the steering. It's not too hard, even with a manual transmission.
onerandomfellow 2 years ago
you are right, I didn't say it's not possible, but it should not happen. it may damage the car.
icefox1983 2 years ago 2
apparently you don't know much about car -- turning the wheel while car is stationary may damage the car. Now everyone is driving power-steering and automatic transmission that they hardly know what a gear is.
icefox1983 2 years ago 2
Turning while standing puts unnecessary stress to tyres and whole steering mechanism, no matter whether it's power assisted or not and is a general sign of sloppy and cumbersome driver. Maybe some basic driving lesson would help you?
