  • She. Is. Amazing.

  • who the hell disliked this!!!?

  • Wow..... Is it me or is there a strong resemblance to Liza M in some of these shots? Especially the mouth....

  • I've just been Lupwned... agh I love this feeling <3

  • Love, Love, LOVE this woman. She OWNS this song. Check out the clip that NewNickTahoe has up of her doing it in her one-woman show. It's even better....if that's possible!

  • She is so amazing. SO amazing.

  • I love the conductor watching her to see how long she's gonna hold that last note!

  • I love the conductor watching her to see how long she's gonna hold that last note!

  • bienggggg alivvvvvvvveeeeeAH hahah patti :)

  • I've met Patti. She is awesome, and really a fantastic person.

  • And the irony is that now she has graduated to singing the preceding song - "The Ladies Who Lunch" - in the real show (which had better come out on CD and DVD, as the whole thing was too amazing to keep to Broadway for four days and movie theaters for one).

  • I have to say I like Dean Jones' performance the best.

  • Thrilling!!!

  • Those are PANTS?

  • Honestly, to me this is the best live performance of any song, by any artist, ever. Granted, I definitely haven't seen them all, but it kind of has to be. :-)

  • If this is what us humans are capable of then our small planet worthed his chance to be in the universe

  • this is my favorite

  • Great audience! That's the only way to respond to Patti M-F'n Lupone.

  • I looove how in the last "alive," the conductor turns around and is watching her for the end cue....so funny

  • Effortless. She is awesome!

  • I'm starting a cult to her....

  • I'm impressed by the 8 seconds because I've seen people do it and take breaths there but your right...the last phrase is most impressive. You're adorable singing that turkey song!

  • anyone that understands music and breathing should be blown away....when she sings "but alone....is alone...not alive ( NO BREATH)....and then right into "somebody crowd me with love......" fucking brilliant!!!!

  • @mjtny2 That's actually not too crazy..."Alive" is only held for about 8 seconds before continuing...no crazy feat. It's the last phrase that's impressive!

  • @mjtny2 true! damn amazing!

  • Oh, Patti.

  • my hero.

  • Only one who beats the Streisand rendition!

  • It honestly does not get any better than this. End of.

  • Think this could be my favourite version of a great song ...

  • Forgive Patti. She just came from her cousin Marie's wedding reception in Great Neck. This is her best performance of all time.

  • 2:21 !!!!!!!! AMAZING!

  • this gets more amazing every time I watch

  • Holy shoulder pads, Batman. :) Gotta love the 90s!

  • Beautiful but doesn't hold a candle to Streisand's interpretation on the "Broadway Album"

  • ok?

  • My all time favorite broadway singer!!You go girl!

  • the last notes are beautiful. i adore her<3

  • This version is the tops! Patti sings it like no-one else, the arrangement and orchestra really will take some beating! Simply The Best !

  • Bernadette Peters did such an amazing rendition! That's my fave. Byt this song in general is just beautiful

  • I hope her hair stylist is now in jail

  • idina menzel should try singing this!

  • I don't know why people are bringing Esparza into this. It's out of the context of the show, being sung by a woman. Different circumstances.

I think Patti does a great job! I mean, she IS Patti. So she's got the jaw vibrato, strange enunciation, and hammy acting going on. But she's dynamite, nevertheless.

  • I also applaude her for her breath support. This is a VERY challenging song to sing, and catching your breath for the last few big notes is a bitch. But Patti makes it look simple.

  • Why you say this? afaik "being alive" is sung by Bobby in Company, women who sing this song do it out of any particular show, isn't it?

    Cheers!

  • jesus, woooow!!! 2:19 is insane!

  • i don't understand why people are saying that cetain performers of this song are being "too emotional" it is a very emotional piece if u r meaning over acting then thats soemthing different

anyway although this was not bad at all seriously AM I THE ONLY ONE WHO DOESN'T LIKE PATTI LUPONE?

  • No, I don't like Ms. LuPone either. But this wasn't bad at all, as you said yourself.

And I prefer Esparza, no wonder he was on the Tony.

  • You will probably find most people who use their time watching a Patti performance are Patti fans......ergo, I wouldn't use my time so much watching Bernadette Peters because I simply don't care for her voice.

  • @intomybrain12345 You can be both a Patti fan AND a Bernadette fan. And if you're a Sondheim fan, you've probably seen most of their performances, particularly the latter.

  • For my taste - Esparza gets too dramatic - simplicity for Sondheim is key. Dean Jones is superb. Judy Kaye is also grand! Great Song.

  • Owned by Ms LuPone.

  • I prefer Esparza, but Patti does indeed rock it

  • I know thisll seem weird, but I always love trying to hear them gasp a breath lol for instance in Sweeney Todd Anglea did it sooo much. I ♥ her though. Idina does it a lot too. La LuPone however, pshh shes evolved above air really

  • First, let me say that I love Bernadette. But I have never liked her singing this song. For me, Patti owns this song!!

  • The hair, no. The voice YES.

  • haha....the hair was probably in fashion at the time...but it really looks bad!

  • @briandjones4

I agree, who the hell did her hair and was like "Oh yeah, this looks good" ??

  • @briandjones4 lol she looks like blanch from golden girls

  • Wow, that's a amzing. I didn't think anyone could sing this better than Bernadette Peters but it's a tough call isn't it?

  • Vocally, it's perfection. I felt she got way too emotional too early though.

  • don't think so. Patti takes it and the crowd knows it. (not that Bernadette isn't a great singer. her closing of Sunday is magnificent.)

  • Oh..ekhm, Bernadette Peters is better.

  • true brilliance

  • Its a man's song, but she utterly rocks it!!

  • AMAZING - This is patti at her best!

can someone please tell me what the note is for "alone"

  • first alone was an E flat, the second was a G. I actually had to go to my piano to figure those out. cause firstly, Sondhiem writes crazy intervals that are hard to hear and second, patti does this wierd scoop/riff thing on both of them... so yummy!

  • Patti, baby...

  • Bernadette Peters vz.. of this was much better

  • that is a horrible outfit

  • Can anyone tell me what key this is being done in? Is it c-major?

  • F major

  • 1:50 is classic Patti haha. One of the greatest vocal performances ever...truly. The only better singer is Judy Garland. LOVE IT!!!

  • I LOVE judy, she is better than anyone.

  • I think this woman invented the word "Diva".

  • I love how Patti gives a signal to the composer with her hand when to end the song. He starts waiting at 2:26. Rehearsal rocks! :) team work baby. Wonderful job!

  • I noticed that too lol oh the little wonders of live shows =]

  • Comment removed

  • heh at around 0:30 you can see the conductor flipping multiple pages to catch up - funny

  • beautiful voice, but mannnn oh man do i wish lupone wouldn't chew her words like she does

  • Wow. That is all I can say. Wow.

  • One of the best performances I have ever witnessed. I can't imagine what it must have been like live.

  • Simply amazing stage presence, control, and delivery. And the most awesome B natural in life!
