  • this is freaking awesome!!!!

  • You did the music on Logic Pro. I recognizeone of the loops.

  • so i must not take off the strings on a floyd rose system?

  • @crysisgamer81 You should take them off, I just was just lazy and was trying a few pickups out. It's also a lot harder to do with strings on with a Floyd Rose.

  • @el34superlead uhm you can just take the bridge off... just slack the strings and take off the springs and lift it clean off without ever changing strings.

  • @xxjoanrdxx Check out Tremsetter made by hipshot

  • @xxjoanrdxx The adjustment screws on the sides are used to tilt the pickup. This way you can adjust the volume difference between low and high strings. As for tilt front to back well it should be perpendicular to the strings. If it's really bad you should fix it sometimes this means bending the tab a little or building a shim. If it's just slight and sound good don't worry about it.

  • how much it cost if i get a technician to replace my pickup?

  • @MKvsdctester2 I think most shops charge about $50 a pickup.

  • Hi there, i just have a question, i have an esp ec-50 and usually the top pickup selector switch controls the bridge pickup, but in my case the top seems to control the neck instead, i got this guitar seconds hand, maybe they installed it wrong? is there any way that i can have the top selector switch control the bridge instead of the neck? thanks

  • @goatygeek Could be wired backwards or switch was turned around, some people like it that way. Easiest thing is to just loosen it and spin it around.

  • @el34superlead Thanks, i just disconnected it and soldered again now its all fine. :) thanks for the help.

  • You're right they can't be split.

The tripleshot is best used with the P-Rails anyway. A push/pull volume pot is much cheaper when splitting or phasing humbuckers also.

  • Ugh... I can change em faster. JK. I'm getting a Seymour Duncan Blackout and I was wondering do you if Blackouts are compatible with Seymour Duncan Tripleshot mounting rings. I don't know if actives can be split or not. Please help me. I don't wanna wast my munny on a trippleshot if it ain't gonna work.

  • how do you know which one's to sauder?

  • @RippinSkullz The new pickups come with wire diagrams not all use the same color leads. But to make things simple just cut the old wires from old joints and leave a little of the wire insulator. Then when you solder new wire remove old at the same time. And do one pickup at a time.

  • OK. thanks a lot.

  • @el34superlead hello, I recently baught a Epiphone Les Paul with EMG pickups (off ebay for reasons idk) but its terrible, the 81 is in the neck and 85 in the bridge (thats just one of the problems) and I wanna switch them, but im not sure how the original wiring was, any guides to help me on this? Also, another problem, Only sometimes do the pickups work, I have to keep flipping the toggle switch til they turn on which they fade in and out when they DO work, PLEEAASSEE help me

  • @mCR2311 The pickups need to be rewired. The old owner probably did a bad wiring job and maybe did not use the correct tone and volume pots for active pickups. I would rewire and check the correct parts are being used. EMG in a Less Paul type guitar should sound amazing.

  • @el34superlead Thank You!

  • Ever heard of a guy named Eddie Van Halen? Jake E. Lee maybe? How about Randy Rhoads then??? Or do you realize the fact that Charvel basically morphed INTO Jackson? When Grover designed Randy's guitars he decided to start putting his name on them instead, starting with the Rhoads model. Perhaps you haven't met enough guitar players to know someone with a kick ass Charvel, but I have played plenty of them, so please try not to say something is shitty just because you don't know about it.

  • Back in the day, before all the proficient Metal guys played BC Rich / Jacksons and when ESP was virtually unheard of higher end Charvels were THE guitar to have. If you were into Metal, especially Thrash / Speedmetal / Crossover, there were very few faster necks / more buttery action guitars then a good Charvel. I own Custom Shop Les Pauls, etc, but I would still rock a good Charvel anyday for fast hardcore / Metal. It's the Guitar that all the guys playing Kramers wish they had.

  • yea man i have an old 1992 charvel and its still going strong

  • I think most people like the 81 in the bridge.

  • @el34superlead another question, when i turn the volume knobs, sometimes it goes past where its supposed to and starts turning the tone knobs in a different direction, any tips?

  • @mCR2311 Your Volume and tone pots are loose when you turn the knob the wires are spinning on the pot in-turn making the other pot turn. If you don't fix this the wires may break or short.

  • Do you HAVE to take off the strings to put new pickups in

  • Yea, usually a good time to put new ones on also. But if a bunch of different pickups out in the same day strings slow things down ;o)

  • If you have a Floyd Rose or other floating bridge, you can usually just take the Floyd off by taking out the springs in the back.

  • Ummmm, thanks for pointing that out genius.

  • hahahaha

  • wow, he did all of that in a minute and 3 seconds. That's pretty fast!

  • Whatever! That dude needs to slow down! @ 0:33 to 0:35 the pliars are under the guitar body and @ 0:50 they end up under the neck! He probably scratched the body with the pickup screws trying to get it in and out under the strings without removing them! If you do decide to change your own pickups take the time to the job right!

  • Hey Bell-fairy-um. Why you gotta be a hater of people that can move that fast? It's people like you that give this time vampire we call Youtube a bad name.

  • The pliers were never under the body except when it was under the bottom horn, the time laps drops a lot of frames. The plier handles are padded. I loosen the strings and dive bomb the whammy for about 5 inches between the strings and body. The guitar is over 30 years old and only a tiny chip near the headstock and a small scratch from a belt buckle. It so is not a show piece it's a guitar that is meant to be played. I've had a dozen different pickups in it and it has been refretted.

  • That was awesome. I like how you put your pickup change to music. Made for a very entertaining and knowledge filled video. Have a great Friday. God bless you and your family. That is a sweet guitar.

  • ma bravo ajd jos brze prikazi filmic

  • I wish I could do that. I have an ESP MH250NT and it has crappy ESP pickups in it. I've got a set of Seymour Duncan Blackouts sitting around in my drawer, but I've never got around to getting them put in. I wish I could do it myself it woudl make it sooo much easier.

  • It's pretty easy to do, all you need is a cheap soldering iron and a screwdriver and a very basic knowledge of electric circuits... and that can be replaced with common sense.

  • i wanna learn how to do that hehehe

  • haha

i don't feel comfortable doing that myself.

  • it costs like 60 $ to change them in a store, not too much cos im gonna change them only once, those suckers will have to last a long time :]

  • I never thought it wopuld need to solder, now that ive seen it, Im not changing my pickups on my own :D

  • minus 1 for you!! cause you made me laugh!! LOL

  • nice charvel is that a Sam Dimas?

I have a late 80s early 90s charvel with the jackson pickups and schaller floyd rose

  • No idea, It's a custom shop guitar with a neck-thru, Kahler, rare large cavity and came with onboard preamp. I have a picture of it from a 1987 guitar player ad. It's super heavy and has the feel and playability that I can't describe. I've only seen one more like it on ebay.

  • Sorry 57world57 accidentally removed your post.

And you should have no problems swapping EMG's for your Duncans.

  • to me a novice at electronics etc it seems simple because the pup is connected to one wire cut that wire put the old pup somewhere safe then solder the new pup to the original wire is that safe? please answer

  • Well all pickups have at least two solder points, 1 wire and a ground, many have 2 wires and a ground and most humbuckers have 4 wires and maybe a ground. So if you have more the 1 wire and a ground you need to know what wire(s) are + - and from what coil.

  • i have a prs se singlecut and im just trying to change the bridge pickup to passive emgs but the thing is that the wires for the stock pickups look like they're wired up differently than how im supposed to wire up the passive emgs(as it shows on the diagram). after i disconnect the pickups am i supposed to wire my EMG up how it shows on the diagram or do you think that i should wire them up differntly?

  • Sometimes pickup companies use different color wires. So go with the EMG diagram if the pickups sound out of phase when using both pickups change the positive and ground wire. But I'm pretty sure you'll be fine with EMG suggest.

  • thanks soooo much ;]

  • can u change the original pickups on a guitar to any kind of pickup later??

    please respond

  • Yes sort of. There are two basic pickup types and sizes Humbucker (Gibson) and single coil (Fender strat). Most guitars have one or both these pickups. Just check with any pickup maker you'll see plenty that will work with your guitar.

  • what the hell

  • i want to go from passive emgs to active emgs will this pose a problem??can it be done? how difficult is it? please respond.

  • I believe EMG sell kits with everything you need to switch over to active pickups. Other then a few more solder points, installing new pots and finding room for a battery it's not a big deal.

  • thanks alot for the reply, i looked into it and going active would cost the same as buying a used guitar. im gonna buy a used guitar with active pickups.

  • This helped NOT

  • is changing pickups to and emg set as easy as this video ?

  • Is there any special tools you have to have to do this?

  • Just a screw drive, wire strippers and a soldering iron.

  • How well does the Kahler trem work? Do you have to have locking nuts with it, too?

  • The Kahler is very smooth and has a light touch. Most people prefer the stiffer feel of floyd rose. I don't use a trem much so I'm not a good person to ask. And it does come with a locking nut.

  • that's a beautiful Charvel with a Khaller.

  • Thanks it's a early 80s that look and plays awesome but weights a ton.

  • ok i'm freaking confused. i riped open my slammer xp1 ad i wanna change the pickups myself, there is only 1 wire going to each pickup...shouldn't there be 2? i bough a set of passive emg select series pickups. and they have 2 wires...., i know one is power, and one is ground... but the pickups in my slammer only have 2 wire? anyone know anything about this.?

  • Most likely you have coax type wire with one wire in the middle and the ground wrapped around the outside of middle wire. The new pickups should have two wires and a ground. the reason for two wires is to be able to change phasing and other wiring options.

  • hey, nope its one single wire to each pickup, just a red on the bridge pick up and a yellow on the neck pickup. i have a video i will post.

  • You can change a pickup in anything. Just make sure you get the right size, gibson mainly uses standard humbuckers, mini humbuckers and p-90s.

  • I'm COMPLETELY new to changing pickups. I've recently decided to replace the stock pickups on my Epiphone les paul.

I think i've decided to get..

Two Gibson P94 single coil p/u's (neck & middle positions)

    &

Seymour Duncan '59 (SH-1) (bridge position)

    ...

Whattya think? Smart choice? I'm trying to get a more bluesy/crunchy tone out of my guitar, i was hoping that these would do it.

  • Never heard P-94s but everybody loves P-90 in a les paul and they should sound the same.

And you can't go wrong with the SH-1 that sound has been around forever, blues, rock, country or metal.

  • Sounds similar to what I've heard.

In that case - what recommendations do you have for a more bluesy sound out of a Les Paul. I almost want it to sound like a strat - think like, John Mayer Trio - esque sound.

I'd probably buy a strat if i didn't love the feel and beauty of my black beauty:O.

  • You may be better off just doing a coil tap on your Humbuckers (if they are 4 wire) so you can use them in single coil. Add a push / pull volume knob to switch, you get classic LP and a somewhat fender-like sound.

What ever you do 3 single coil pickups on a strat is the only real way to get that sound. Sounds like John plays the neck and middle pickup.

  • You should ask yourself what kind of tone you want. Also consider whether you want active or passive pups. Look up pickups on Wikipedia. It will provide a lot of information for you! I was pretty new to pickups a little while ago, so I thought my advice would help. Hope it does!

  • hello,

i thouhg this would teach me how to install pickups. but it did not, its too fast !!

This is the biggest pile of balls ever

  • And I though you could click on more info and read... I guess were both disappointed.

  • when do you know to get ne pickups? i have a prs billy martin with normal pickups.

  • You never really need new pickups, some people think pickups even get better with age. Most people change the pickups to find a different sound. PRS use great pickups but if you don't like the PRS sound you can find something different, but do your homework it's sometimes a lot money for not much difference.

  • I liked the time lapse video but I'm just wondering, how much time did this actually take you?

  • I think it took about 20 minutes. As soon as I can find some P Rails that charvel (or maybe my ibanez) will be getting some major renovation in the electronics department.

  • never trust a guy at GC to give you accurate guitar information

  • No basic difference, but on some the neck pickup is a little closer to the bridge because of the extra frets.

  • take the strings off when you change the pickups dude, you could ruin the strings and the pickup by leaving them on so you might aswell not risk it and take them off, it makes it easier

  • Strings are cheap, I loosen the strings and dive bomb the whammy plenty of room.

  • really stupid

  • Who me for making it or you for watching it.

  • ok this isn't a quick pickup change if you just speed up the video.

  • wats the defrent between an Active pickup and Passive pickup?

  • actives need internal power sorces. and passives dont

  • simplified, actives run on battery

  • This is great! I had to pay $150 to get mine done Damn!!I got ripped off

  • Iv just replaced the stock neck pickup in my dean razorback with a seymour duncan invader, however the volume of this pickup is around half the volume of the bridge pickup, have i damaged the pot or is it something else, any help would be great

  • Tough to tell but check the pickup wiring make sure you have the right colors connected, make sure the ground is good. Plug it in with the cover off and wiggle the wires to see if anythings loose. Switch the pickup wiring with the lead pickup to check pots, caps, switch.

  • You look like you know what your doing, Wow, i wish i did,

I have a Dean Vendetta 7-string, and I've been recommended the EMG-707, would some one at a guitar shop, or some place do this cheap?

  • The EMG is a active pickup so it will need a battery and usually different volume and tone pots. Most shops will do the work or tell you a where to bring it. If I were you I would probably not go with a EMG for that guitar. First I think Deans sound killer stock I don't know who makes there pickups but they sound great. Second EMG are expensive and with instillation you could get a great distortion or overdrive pedal that would give you more band for your buck and save some money.

  • Thanks man, you just saved me MOO LA!

    I bought a Boss ML-2

    and a

MXR DD-11 Tribute Dime Distortion, its the Dimebag darrell Tribute distorter

    They both sound wonderful!

  • so how long did it take withouth the timelapse?

  • about 15 minutes, could have done it a little faster if I didn't have the camera in the way. usually would take longer to take the strings off and put new ones back on but I cheated by just loosening the strings dive-bombing the whammy

  • they should make guitars with clip in pickups, no wiring bull shit

  • EMG's have plugs.

  • realy? meh, im new lol

  • right ok.... Dont you think slowing the movie down would give ppl an idea on how to actually change pickups.

  • emg 81/85 or even better for amazing sound, i jus got a new set of Seymour Duncan - Dave Mustaine Livewire active humbuckers... they sound amazing

  • I agree the 81/85 combo are used by a lot of metal players. But going to active pickups are expensive, you'll need pickups, pots and battery holder. I think EMG sells a kit.

Also pickups can sound different in different guitars. Take a look at the Duncan Dimebucker.

brendanb1236, I use a SH-2 neck pickup in my ibanez I think that is what Mustaine use to use. Does the active neck pickup still have that type of sound?

  • o ya, but sounds cleaner and fuller at the same time, which is amazing. cuz i have a les w/ emg's and dont get me wrong they are badass. but at points there umm too bassy, and ive never had that prob w/ my new livewire dave mustaine editions. i jus love them, they can play anything and everything w/o probs

  • I'm not sure what shops charge, but I bet if you buy the pickup from your local music store they will probably do the work for a reasonable price. I would guess $20 they will probably want to do a string change also.

Do some research before you buy a new pickup new expensive pickups don't always mean better sound.

  • maybe it's better if u do it slowly...in this way the people can leanrt how to do.. no ?

  • you are not even taking the strings of :D

  • Yea, I loosen them and the guitar has a kahler termolo so I just dive-bombed it and the pickup had plenty of room.

  • that's quick..

  • What kind of problem you having? Although the video was meant to help I've been working on guitars for many years. I would be happy to help or point you in the right direction.

  • I made this because I was playing with my new video camera. No where did I say this is a tutorial. If you looks at related videos to the right you will find plenty of instructional videos.

Also check the Seymour Duncan site plenty of help there.

And pretty much anyone with a solder iron and a screwdriver can change a pickup.

  • legend

  • Ruin ur guitar for that shit... OMFG

  • wow you didnt even take the strings off

  • waste of time......

  • I RACKON ITS FAST FORWARDED because if you look closeley at his hands and arms the are very jerky and

you couldnt do the souldering that fast especially without wanting to ruin your guitar

  • MAN, can you really be that idiotic? You could be an American with such astounding powers of deduction!

  • i think he's kidding.

  • its really quick!

  • Thanks for the comment. Not sure if your name should make me laugh or be afraid... be very afraid ;o)

  • im not really corpsegrinder :D :D if i were you,my name is quickpickupchanger :D its really cool

  • if it could take 1 minute when i do it!

  • if i understand the pickup well, my gibson, epiphone and some others pickup have a big letter on back or in the name...

    Bridge = Treble

    Neck = Rythm

  • hey whats a active and passive pickup?

  • Active pickups use power , usually on board battery. They work like a condenser mic and the sound and output is well controlled and consistent.

Passive is the most common, using only the guitar string vibrating over the pickups magnetic pole pieces and coils of wire to produce the electrical signal.

  • so what is better?

  • They both are good. Bands like Metallica and players like Zakk Wylde use active (EMG) for the raw power sound. They also are used a lot in pop/country music.

Most people use passive for everything from sweet tones to killer crunch. It all has to do with what you like.

  • i see..

    thank you very much!!

that was a really useful info!

  • The bridge has more treble. Thats what most people use. I personally like the warmer sounding neck pickup or my favorite sound is two single coil pickups neck and middle like on a stratocaster.

  • what are pick ups for? sorry I really dont know :P

  • Pickups are like microphones, attached to the body to pickup the sound from the strings. There are different types and different magnets and wire size and number of times the wire is wrapped around the magnets to make many different sounds.

  • thanks :)

  • can you do this a bit slower with explanations?

  • Never meant it to be a tutorial, recorded it using time laps in imovie. I'm going to install a tonestyler tone pot and new pickup in my ibanez. Maybe I'll do short tutorial.

  • what kind of pickups did you put in

  • A Carvin N22T, I may try a Duncan JB next.

  • cool

i just got a DMZ fred and paf pro in my JS100

i figured if theyre good enough for satch hell i might try em

  • good video
