  • ‎Gerald Barry is that bit of Satan inside all of us. Gerald Barry is that feeling we get when we're out at night and feel someone is watching us. He is the definition of Rape. The Human Centipede was based around what he did for fun at 4 years old. Gerald Barry, when born, feasted on his mother, before violently ripping out the Doctor who delivered hims small intestine. He then used that very small intestine to string his first Piano.

  • I dont think anyone is hear for any other reason than their Leaving

and if you claim to like it quit being a smelly Hipster....

  • am i the only one person who likes it?

  • @NozownikJoe Nope :L Our music teacher hates it but yet i love it :L

  • @GraceF12 agreed!!

  • Wow... I kind of get why he's on the Leaving...

  • ok it is terrible but be honest you cant say you dont sing the start of section B over and over again :P

  • Bohemian Rhapsody is the only thing keeping me sane when I hear this!

  • DON DON DON DON DONDONDON!

  • I'm in fifth year.

I have to listen to this for another year and a bit.

    Thank fuck for Bohemian Rhapsody!

  • @LaurenVlogChannel True that!

  • I love how on the sheet music there is a part where it tells you to "play as many notes a possible". I am serious about it!

How many notes can you play using a cat and a piano..........?

  • Sander Cohen approves.

  • Just be glad we didn't have to hear the orchestra practice this over and over again until they got it right like gerald did, poor guy.

  • @bioshockguru this isn't an orchestra. See that title right there? Piano Quartet? Thats your hint.

  • @DarkZekeX Yes it is a piano quartet, well done for spotting that, but if you haven't noticed,it consists of a small orchestra....or maybe i'm just the only one who hears other string instruments.

  • @bioshockguru Do you even know what a piano quartet consists of? It is a traditional, somewhat standard chamber ensemble consisting of a piano and 3 other instruments, which are usually a string trio (violin, viola, and cello). A couple bowed string instruments don't make an orchestra.

  • How I came out with a C in Music after studying this is beyond me

  • All you haters are just too fuckin scared to listen to music that is not sung by a either black guys with more money than we will earn in a lifetime, or by over-manufactured pop artists who use the same chords and melodies, just changed slightly to give the feel of a brand new song. Gerald Barry may not have musically beautiful, but he certainly is musically powerful. Justin Bieber or 50 Cent wouldnt ever have a fucking hope of writing anything near as complex and thought-provoking as this.

  • @Alfalfa2210 What about Suicide Silence, Chelsea Grin and Black Dahlia Murder?

  • oh god what are they teaching us?? How to rape the piano??

  • @InsaneGameLuver Derp.

  • Why do we have to study this for the lc?!?! THIS IS NOT MUSIC!!!!

  • @MsStaySmiling yeah it is.

  • It sounds like something being played backwards. I wonder if it sounds normal when it's played backwards...

  • those piano clusters make my ears hurt sooooo much

  • This song seriously needs a dubstep remix.

  • First heard this when I was in Fourth year in fourth year in 2004. 10 of us laughed through the entire thing. We also used to put in on full volume and run out the door at the end of a class. It was great to see the faces of other people when they heard it.

  • ha am i the only one the loves this?? i think its genius :D

  • I can make the exact same sound when i bang my head on the piano! maybe I should write a piece . . . . . . .

  • how this is on the leavin is beyond logic...its not music...it is to gerald barry apparently tho!

  • thumbs up if you're here cos of your leaving :(

  • awful awful awful...have to listen to this until june... fantastic.

  • @moggster628 you'll start to like it. it grows on you... kind of like a tumour

  • @zero0ism hahahahaha

  • gerald barry in an awful person for making this

  • At what point was this considered to be on leaving cert exam?!, they must of been smoking some crazy ass shit ha

  • I studied this 5 years ago.... and was just reminded of it today when someone mentioned a song with changing time signatures... which set me on a rant re-living studying this crap!!! Hope everyone studying it this year got on ok!! You'll never have to listen to it again I promise!! :D

  • I actually like this? ... It's fun to listen to if you imagine yourself running around in a hedge maze being chased by a crazy guy with a chain saw?

  • it sounds like the musical interpretation of some hideous mental illness.

  • Gerald Barry, master troll

  • Me and my friend have a theory. We believed that he set up a VERY complicated mechanism on his piano which when pressed would send a hammer crashing down on an innocent squirrel or bunnies head. The strings on the bows used on the violins were made from the spines of orphans he had killed in a vicious rage.

  • I love Barry!

  • @caekface I'm a sucker for Philip Glass. Also Messiaen.

  • music question, what technique shows this is irish? my answer: He was playing pissed off his head, definitly Irish.

  • @makaveli181 actually, the very folky sounding pentatonic melodies are quite Irish-sounding.

  • I hate this man with a passion. Its bonfire night so i cannot wait to watch everything burn :D Good Luck everybody :D

  • I fucking hate this piece of music... Good Luck Everyone :)

  • Good luck today everybody! :)

  • I'm going to take extreme pleasure in smashing the CD to pieces and burning the score in approx. 5 hours from now...

  • I'd do terrible things not to have to do this exam today.....terrible, unforgivable things......

  • @fionnskie whiner

  • 4 minutes ago? you doing your exam in 2 hours like me? :P

  • when it got to around 9:00 i think he ran out of ideas, started smashin his head off the piano and playin the string lines with his bum... yeah thats accurate enough!

  • loving the comments here haha

  • I Love how were all up at midnight cramming.... in the true spirit of the leavingcert!! haha, LAST EXAMMMMMM!!!!!!! never again|!!

  • Just hoping we got a personal response on this, I could write pages..... :D

    ..

    ...

    .... HATE

  • Everytime i try study this i just feel like im after being raped in the ear

  • better not come up tomorow as a 25 mark question

  • This sounds a lot better on mute...

  • Gerald Barry can eat my arse crust.

  • @blueblueblee eww your ass is crusty. And you're a scat fetishist....

  • If headaches could speak, they would sound like this...

  • piano clusters? what was he thinking.. play as many notes as possible? thats not a compositional technique.. :@

  • Would you get full marks for describing his instrumentation as "He rapes a cat and records it on a mobile phone"?

  • @candycian Rich Dynamic sound constructed through repeated head banging off an out of tune piano accompanied by a teen disco with no bass line and extra treble.

  • @candycian

He rapes it? I always thought he was swinging it by the tail into a piano..

  • @candycian records it on a calculator more likely

  • Although after months of endless music study this is the one piece im not sick of yet, starting to grow on me a bit even, although have now started naming the themes in my own special way e.g section a is now known as the "bunnies running through the field" section and the first section B is now known as "bunnies jumping into bear traps because they can" section. .............How i miss life without the leaving :/

  • ............studying this and one of the questions, "Describe Barrys Use Of Monophonic Ideas" .......*sigh*

  • My music exam is tomorrow and this is the first time iv heard this piece! my immediate reaction is it is still better than seachanges last year!! but it is still by all means an ear raping mash of noise!!

  • @mrthehando better get studying man!

  • @mrthehando Same here! although I think I heard something like this on Moore street once but yea! Haven't a notion what to do! And yes, Seachanges was an absolute c*nt. F*cking Raymond Dean

  • Bravo! Cheers from Brazil

  • Gerald bastard, nice one:D!!lol, ah no i actually like this music, for the sole reason that five or so months ago i had a nightmare and this piece was in it,and it really suited my nightmare!since then i think this piece is quite atmospheric, and would really suit being in a horror movie!

  • I love the way this is a somewhat world renowned Irish composition, and 90% of the comments are about how shit this is as a part of the Leaving Cert. In all fairness its a bitch of a piece to study and in my opinion as far as musical compositions go.. old or contemporary this is.. how do I word this eloquently?..hmm...shite ! Why can't we study some pink floyd, modest mouse, dan le sac or borgore?

  • @FinnOnline well we do get to do Bohemian rhapsody. I suppose they try to keep the course broad

  • this piece is like the dubstep of contemporary music!

you think its gonna end with a bang then boom.. disappointment

  • i want to burn my laptop now....

  • Am I the only person who likes this work? It's actually my favourite.

  • @CautiousDiffusion yes, yes you are

  • @CautiousDiffusion You're a rare breed.

  • 6:30 Horowitz would be proud :P

  • Seriously, you'd think they would have tuned the instruments before playing....

  • people in our class actually make weezing noises when this comes on

  • You might all hate him but at the end of the day he's the successful composer that we're all studying and i don't think abusive comments on youtube will change that by the end of the month. Just saying. Then again i have been immunized to this song after listening to it for so long.

  • This is so hard to enjoy. I mean, I'm awfully open-minded with contemporary music and I kind of 'get' what he was trying to do but when it gets past 2-3 minutes it starts to become tedious really fast.

  • Gerald Barry can suck my balls. Ruining my life

  • Go fuck yourself, Gerald Barry

  • anyone else only able to find one recording of this on itunes, and it's damned expensive???

  • @BriM458 Why don't you get the leaving cert cd with all the works on it?

  • Thanks for putting this up @Dave2bu

  • @AoifeRyan93 'Tis grand :)

  • @ChaosDynamics I most certainly am not a hipster and I really like this piece :)

  • Tommy Tiernan would be proud of this.

  • I love the last note. It's so like "You want a big ending? YOU WANT A BIG ENDING?...yeah well fuck you! Bwuahaha."

  • Jeez XD Reading the comments here has been a laugh. I didn't know there were so many musical pussies out there. Can't take just a little bit of tension or dissonance, or complexity of rhythm. Have you guys ever listened to Stravinsky or Debussy or Schoenberg even? Let alone Ligeti, Varese and Cage. This piece opens with pentatonic melodies! Thats too much for your ears? XD

  • @DarkZekeX It is understandable why some people dont like this piece though. Yes, there is crazier music out there like Stockhausen etc but this piece can be quite difficult to listen in places too (eg the superimposed melody at 4:50). I agree with you that it is cool sounding in parts, but I don't think it was composed in order to sound nice and is intended to be listened to in a different way to Tchaikovsky or whatever, which is beyond some people. I personally enjoy it but understand the hate

  • @Dave2bu meh, I think they can learn to enjoy it. There's plenty of beauty in this piece, as is in music of people like Stockhausen, as there is in music of people like Tchaikovsky. If you allow yourself to get used to it, and attempt to understand it, you'll wind up enjoying more and more music.

  • @DarkZekeX Yeah I agree. I enjoyed this piece more the more I listened to it and most people I know are the same. Having said that, it's not my favourite piece of music either - I don't like the lack of continuity, and the aforementioned intolerable superimposed melodies. Have you heard anything from his opera "The Intelligence Park"? - there's a few bits here on YouTube. I wasn't too keen - I don't think music like this ought to be sang :) what about you?

  • @Dave2bu I like modern operas XD in particular, I love Ligeti's Le Grande Macabre. And you said there's a lack of continuity, what do you mean?

  • @DarkZekeX Ah right fair enough! I mean the piece keeps chopping and changing - doesn't flow very well. I realise that most parts are related, but still I would probably prefer if he'd made several smaller pieces out of the different ideas rather than lumping them all together into one piece. I've never heard of Ligeti to be honest, I'll check him/her out!

  • @Dave2bu I think those are movements hon, the different sections.

  • @DarkZekeX Eh, yeah fair enough :) I'd rather a different structure then or something.

  • @Dave2bu By the way, what is this "leaving cert" exam thing? Is Leaving Cert a music school? Is the exam like.... listening and identifying things in the pieces? or analyzing them? or actually performing them?

  • @DarkZekeX The Leaving Cert. is a part of State Exams that students do in Ireland before they go to college. For music, you have four set works, this being one of them. The other three this year are a Cantata by Bach (Jesu Der Du Meine Seele); Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen and Tchaikovsky's Romeo and Juliet's Fantasy Overture. We don't have to play them, just study them and then we have listening questions on them. :)

  • @Conortastic Ah, so these aren't even music students necessarily. Alright XD I thought these were all music students like me that were complaining. I still think they're wimps if they can't handle this. Maybe in America we're more exposed to modern techniques, so they're not so startling to us, but really, if those kids gave it a chance they could learn to enjoy it. Its really a fine piece, by a composer of their homeland even!

  • @DarkZekeX Yeah we're not all that proud of him. It would really take an awful lot of will power to learn to enjoy this.

  • @DarkZekeX Yes, because here in Ireland, music like this "startles us".

  • @Bulletshield3 Apparently. It makes many of you folks resort to name-calling.

  • @DarkZekeX you're so hardcore.

  • @buzzgra XD what?

  • @buzzgra i agree DarkZekeX is hardcore, i mean the top favorite on their page is My Little Pony, Along with the amazing ability to be able to withstand the ''Startling'' power of Gerald Barry. Its clearly not a case of ''OMG i'm so random and weird that i like this music''

  • I don't understand the hate. This music is really cool sounding. To be honest, its really not even that odd sounding. I'd love to see some of the virgin ears here take a listen to Cage and Stockhausen and Penderecki and Cowell. I'm not arguing that its not difficult to play; it sounds insane, but its by no means difficult to listen to, unless Beethoven is as far as you get. :P

  • This guy is an actual dickhead for composing this.. no wonder he looks like he's about to kill himself :@

  • ''HAND CLUSTERS'' *Play as many notes at possible*

  • I like it.

  • what the flautando?! :/

  • While you all pity yourselves for having to listen to this, I pity the poor little feckers who had to learn how to play this piece.

  • lost? SENZA VIBRATO ftw!!!!!

  • When I talk about Gerald Barry my friends they dont understand why his music gets to me so much... you people understand me!!!

  • I hate gerald barry hes making my LC music miserable :P i actually quite like the piece though just a pain to learn XD

  • this hurts me

  • In our school, we call him Gerald Bastard.

  • @Talonere :D it doesn't even rhyme!

  • @Dave2bu

Do you think that that would stop Gerald? =P

  • @Talonere We call him Cunt in mine

  • Cant beat the 4 part canon at a crotchet beat apart

  • @Jewhack2 Try 5 part canon at a quaver beat apart. I guess you got a B in music =)

  • @TheBarriscale Thats what i meant haha :D

  • @TheBarriscale Actually I was right and so were you, both types of canon occur :P

  • bohemian rhapsody ftw..:L

  • i know it doesnt take this long to tune your instruments, guys! come on ya'll lol

  • my god this sounds absolutely shit

  • This sounds like Cats on Acid being thrown at a Piano.

  • THE F*CK!?

  • Hand clusters... played EXPLOSIVELY

  • @JosieThom galumphingly.

  • He would SO fail melody questions ...

  • @Masteuszmm i see your studying him too :P

  • @Masteuszmm Melody questions?

  • Gerald Barry: Enraging leaving cert students since 1993

  • Any one know where i can buy the score for this?

  • This is a hella lot better than Bach.

  • @johnnythewonderfly your kidding right?

  • @Jewhack2 Way better! Tchaikovsky sounds like the fucking Star Wars soundtrack mixed with an advert for Cornettos.

  • @johnnythewonderfly And that's a bad thing... why?

  • @johnnythewonderfly At the end of my LC paper i was write that! soooo funny!! XD

  • Comment removed

  • @allofthemadyokes

Tapes rewinding sound nothing like that you foo. Its more like pissed sailors dancing on a construction site. Still fuckin' briliant though.

  • It sounds like a tape rewinding...who genuinely published this thinking it was good?...

  • this is disgusting

  • Why did you upload this? Dear fuck. Now I can share it with my friends -_-

  • LOVE IT!!!!

  • It sucks so bad :(

I hope they just forget to put it into the leaving...

  • Are you serious? I have to learn this for the Leaving? FML!

  • sucks :(

  • Related videos - "Simon Cowell CRYING!"

  • I hope gerald Barry gets raped up the bum bum by an angry mob of leaving cert students!

  • Fucking hate Gerald Barry, have to do this for the L.C. next june D': actually gives me a headache, sorry to all those who love it, but I just don't like it, I can see how it's supposed to work, but this piece just hurts.

  • You're horrible.

  • @BackRockDelta :O why?!

  • @caekface forgive me- -i didn't mean to preach but it's hard not to get enthusiastic from time to time....that's all. I like to encounter views which are different to my own :-)

  • BRING IT ON L.C. 2011. Gotta love the music course. :)
