  • Watched it twice in 3 days-once in English and once in Japanese with subtitles.Prefer the native language.I would like to have watched it more but it was too upsetting.A supreme tour de force in any language,in any genre. One of the best movies I have ever seen. Watch it and learn.

  • I watched the film few years ago and like it. Amazing and really emotional.

  • This film was simply amazing

Japanese or English, i loved it, not all the depressing stuff (obv) but the story line was so detailed...i cried a number of times at this film.

This is a must see! But this film is NOT for those who get upset easily..

but still... Studio Ghibli! You Rock!

  • I know some of you are gonna hate me for saying this, but I was kind of disappointed with this movie. I had such high expectations for it, since I had heard nothing but praise about how powerful and sad it is, but quite honestly I found it pretty boring. That being said, I hate war-movies in general, so that could have influenced by opinion.

  • @SurvivorsOfTitanic you're gay

  • @DareYouNotToClick1

Aren't you mature and open-minded calling someone gay because they express their honest opinion in a civilized manner? Go back to grade school to learn some respect and get rid of that homophobic vocabulary before making a dickhead out of yourself on the internet. Unless, of course, you're a troll, in which case you may continue being totally ignorant and disrespectful.

  • @SurvivorsOfTitanic Wow, two words and he flies off the handle. Calm down.

  • あ、日本人が戦時中に英語話してるやん

  • Hello: Well I want to say this is a very good review and yes people should see this. Not only because of what it embraces and moves you inside but because is the truth; in every war there has ever been the ones that suffer the most are the ones we don't want to see IINSIDE the people who lives through it and yet, are not the ones who were up to it and pay the consequences on others actions. Presidents, kings, ministers, religious dogmas, etc. no matter the source agression ends in more death.

  • 2:18... oh god... that part made me want to bawl and yell when I first saw it.

  • 皆さんありがとう

  • •Would this story have been equally as affecting if it had been told using live-action, not animation? What if characters had been grownups, not kids?

  • war teaches people nothing

  • i have to reiterate why this movie is so realistic in it's personal point of view and experiences from the point of view of children. it's in tough times that people's true colors are shown, anyone can be nice or giving in times of abundance or act like it. this film showcases that truth of humanity. i've heard true stories during wartime where a couple even sold their wedding ring to help feed some people & at the same time there are people who are selfish & brutal as well. amazing movie

  • no movies had ever made me going to tear..and i'm a guy....there..

  • Dubbing this film should be considered a crime. It's like dubbing Sinatra with a monkey or something....

  • @XpresloX Oh, here's a redneck blind white swine rants! Truman? Oh, Shit! You like the worst racist in the world. He'd ordered US force not to let Japan surrender before he could use A-bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Who's the poor one never taught the facts in history!?

  • @Changyui This is reflect your poor education of shit that you learned in your propagnanda school. However I still like Truman. Fuck your Jap emperror of Shit !

  • @XpresloX Oink, Oink, Oink! White swine rants! :-(

  • @XpresloX WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Okay so seriously please check your facts before you comment on nations being killers, oh, and plus the Us has done some worse things so stop trying to make other countries look like some sadistic murderers

Plus how could you say stuff like that if you watched the movie, what 'killer' nation can make that kind of moving movie

  • @Changyui no acutally the war general of japan just wouldn't surrender(though the emperor did want to) until they dropped the bombs. don't get me wrong that person saying japan is the worst country ever is an ignorant twat who for some reason cant seem to realize that every country has done terrible things and the simple fact is that human beings in general can be very evil. but i was just sayin. oh btw he's probably a troll anyway though so he's just wasting everyone's time.

  • @XpresloX u r missin the point.

  • @mia0032

Its just the cartoon made by Jap, propagnanda

  • @XpresloX yeah right. just cartoon and not about who is victim or not.

  • @mia0032

But Jap invented this cartoon in order to be a victim. In reality they are a murder

  • @XpresloX people r all victims. there is no winer in the war. actually these kids didnt kill anyone.

  • @mia0032

So why Jap was the great murder women n children on the world ?

  • @XpresloX i dont know what u r talking about. woman and children?? huh?

  • @mia0032

    yea, during ww2

  • @mia0032 i will second to ur comments, u r 100% correct..the winner is the head, but the loss is the nation people. WAR modernly today are not for land gain but for lust of greed and money.

  • @XpresloX uh, u might want to check your own mental health or it's a case of of you being a very undeveloped soul or simply a moron. how about that assessment which is actually more on track? what's even more disturbing is how one can watch this and actually not get the message of this movie or be moved by it. u must have a black pit for a heart.

  • @yowurstnitmare I shit on your Hirohito head, go to eat it !

  • @XpresloX u r just showing yourself to be a lowlife the more you comment and how amazingly dense you are. keep it up.

    lmao

  • as even the reviewer noted that even the japanese turned on eachother and it revealed the good and bad people in society in these tough times. what makes this movie so profound is it's an allegory for instrinsic truth that applies to any society in regard to war and that war is tragic. this movie focuses on the real victims of war and the most innocent ones such as children and families that had no say so in what went on or were responsible.

  • most movies just focus on soldiers point of view or military point of view which is just barely the whole story. war affects peoples lives and is destructive, plain and simple. that is the point of the movie and it is till occuring today. how can anyone with any sense not see the movie's message? propaganda? absolutely not as it is shown in very human and realistic dynamics of how selfish and even evil people are in general and how the innocent suffer.

  • Nice review this is amazing film you forget in admation its very moving and powerful

  • i hate the english dubs. Setsuko's voice is an annoying, whiny voice and it should be sweet and quiet. Japanese version 10000000X better

  • 10x better in japanese

  • Loved it but hated it. It's very unique, and very emotional. It's also beautiful in every aspect, but the reason I hate it is because of how ruthless it is. I got to a point where I felt things were getting better, but my and the character's hopes were dashed. :( Brilliant, brilliant film, but incredibly demoralising. I guess that's what it's meant to do, though. Hopefully the military can think about the innocent people who suffer the most during a war.

  • I love this film yet I hate it. Movies like this can only be done animated. Make up-effects an only do so much, and the animators did a damn good job with this film, showing the stages of malnutrition little Setsuko goes through. I show this film in my classes where I student teach, the film is a cartoon which makes it accessible for younger viewers but it alienates older viewers who think that cartoons are just for kids. The fact that it is a cartoon works well when I show it to my classes.

  • Well if it was live, which they've done, would look just too shocking.

  • Its...an...ANIME

  • The cockpit was another animated WWII movie.

  • Nice review.

  • Barefoot Gen is another movie based on the bombing of Hiroshima it's also very moving, but Grave of the Fireflies beats it no doubt.

  • @jp0ALK that movie sucked ass. It was so bad it was funny, the best part was when the bomb dropped because at least something exciting happened.

  • @MaLcH10R srry, not Grave of the Fireflies, I meant Bare foot Gen.

  • oh my god.. the english dubs make me cringe!.. seriously its like 50 times better in japanese with eng subs.. which is saying a lot because i'm sure it's still fantastic in english. seita and setsuko's english voice makes me want to punch the voice actors... I can't watch it.

  • I thought the sub over dub elitism was a dead fad.

  • @scarmulletpart2

It's not dead. Only very small.

Todays big thing is the dub over sub elitism.

  • The only anime where I liked the dubs better than the subs is fullmetal alchemist because the western influences helped fill out the parody of hitler's germany. But Funimation really took care with their voice actors. These Dubs are not bad compared to some I've heard.

  • couldn't agree more.

  • @devious222 I thought the english dub was decent. But yeah the Japanese voice acting is more authentic (obviously).

  • u r right...this film is an antidote to those euro-centric WWII films....and it is an important film especially for this important time.

  • True words, this movie was simply incredible!
