@Baritanist Firstly, it's difficult to say that with any certainty, and I am mystified by the idea that just because opera has it's roots in big voices that were relied upon sometimes only for the fact that they could fill a room without a mic, everyone in this day and age should follow suit. I think there is room for a nuanced voice with great control, technique and timbre in a day and age where we can make listening to something so beautiful in a room that fits more than 50 people.

@brendant19 You have no idea what you are talking about and how the voice is changing when it is not trained the old way. The sound changes and singers are not able to sound the way that the composers had it in mind. Florez does not sound like an opera singer, he sounds like Mickey Mouse. What a shame!
almost as good as the PAV version but, seems almost a little dark in color for Rossini which he is usually perfect for this may be more for a light lyric or lyric tenor, but still pretty good
Varry ineresting to see. Watching a video posted long ago and then catching this one. I once heard an inverview given by Florez and I suspect he is sufficiently intelligent and informed about his voice and its place in tenor range of fachs not to abuse it by attempting too many of the sprinto and dramatico roles. By all means let's hear him sing some of th arias in recordings but to attempt some of the more strident roles would, as others have said, cause damage.
@donaldrose I agree. His singing in Rigoletto is on YT he fails in this role. After hearing all the great voices sing the Duke he simply should not put his little instrument out there. His singing in Barber & other lighter stuff is excellent.

If you like JUAN DIEGO FLOREZ check THE 30 TENORS in my playlist SUPER TENOR ARIAS ( including CLAUDIO SOTELO performing ARIA DEL CIRUJANO as a world première for YOU TUBE ) and tell me which one you prefer.
Very nice. I love J. D. Florez! Voice hard to hear clearly. I prefer a little heavier voice in this piece. Maybe Luciano Pavarotti or better yet, Jussi Björling.
E molto buono!
Well done! Why are there so many fine tenors with Spanish heritage around today? Flores has the ideal voice for this and although he slides into the d-flat, once there it is nicely produced.
I sang this repeatedly many years ago because I was one of the few who could reach the notes but my rather deep tenor meant I really did not do the piece justice (honestly I thought I was very ordinary). No, Flores is excellent.
Uh yeah, ok, and? What does that have to do with Florez?? Aside from the fact that your comment is totally unsubstantial and inane, Florez is a tenore leggiero, not a lyric spinto tenor.
Hmmmm, I don't speak french, but I believe you said something like "Indeed! They did not understand a word! Florez = zero zero pointed in this song! Ehehee
Abrazo
Florez is the perfect Rossini singer. To his credit, he has yet to reach out to heavier roles that will darken his voice. Like Pavarotti when he was quite young, Florez seemingly sings without any effort whatever. Thank you for this beautiful video.
As a man who has been round the block I'm worried that the top will be blown off this voice by singing too many high notes. That would be a pity. If you have a cadillac you should polish it and ride it once in a while. I gather you're a bocelli fan
Have you any idea how difficult this piece is? Floreez appears to be it's master. It's a star voice. Study, learn repertoire and perform this kind of thing only occasionally. Leave the punters amazed and wanting more.
Libetta, you act like you know classical music. For your education and future musical referrence: this is great voice and artistry. A graduate of Curtis Instiute. Do you know where it is?
Very nice technique, Being a lyric Leggiero I identify alot with this voice type more. He does not have the heavy voice that Rossini wrote for in this aria, The tenor needs to have powerfull top, middle and bottom. It's strong for him at top but the orchestra eats away at him as it loweres. Still great job.
This is heavier Rossini. He does not quite ride over the orchestras. He does not have the heroic heft to do this piece justice. That said, he does a superb job with what he has. He "sings as dramatically as he can" to quote Cesare Valletti about himself.
His voice is just great to listen to..im hooked i just love to get home from work and make a cuppa tea and put Juan on and relax..i recomend this to unwind he is sooo good...BRAVO..
Araiza - I liked the voice. "Benedicta" was scary - not suave. His chest collapses regularly. It may have made his high sections.. muscular. Is it a fair representation? Is this an odd movie, with "Rossini" listening?
Costello - FRESH! Nice depth, warmth. Bad hair day. This is a voice to emulate, and seems to be a musician, as well!
What is really appreciable is the deep religious feeling in his singing. He keeps this line and misses some ocasions to make a brilliant display of his marvelous voice. Young but wise, modest and with great potential. We all wish him the very best.
Rossini doesn't object to the tempo - it is correct, absolutely perfect. No one can help that Sousa used the same tempo, and compound meters. Let me think - aren't they the same era?
Perhaps he needs to work on his mid- low registers. Perhaps that is a question of AGE? His voice is incontrovertibly wonderful, and will not be anywhere near matured until he's 35. This is a perfect sound for him, the music, and the audience.
Tremendous singing. Tempo is just fine for me. It shouldn't be too "religioso," paradoxically as that seems. Rossini can't help being bumptious, and here the tune doesn't sound rushed. And yes, if he sticks to this repertoire AND doesn't sing too much he'll still be singing at 50 and 60. What I think he needs now is the tone colors and the verbal and musical subtlety brought by singers like Schipa, Gedda, Gigli, Tagliavini, Valletti and ..... Villazon
As a future spinto/lyric tenor, I'll say it's quite the temptation to jump into parts like Rodolfo, and Pinkerton at an early age when you feel your voice is ready for this stuff. Not to mention that once you get out there if you're a lyric tenor, better perform parts like Fenton and Tonio since they're for a light lyric and can be performed with ease and not forcing the tone
Sometimes I think this guy should try some countertenor stuff. No voice can get any lighter than this. I think he should do as well as a dramatic countertenor.
You said:"No voice can get any lighter than this". Well... ecco la prova! He is NOT a countertenor but a tenor that... well... I´ll better say that I do not like him. I doubt he will still singing at the age of 50.
His voice is totally non-abused and ideally suited to the music and his delivery. He uses it perfectly, no strain or affectation. Wish we could say that of Pavarotti. This is what we tenors should take as the standard, assuming he is singing as accurately as Joshua Bell plays.
I love Florez voice but I also love Pavarottis his voice is darker and heavier than Florez but he sanged great up -95 and by then he was 60 years old and his way of living (to much food and to little exercise) took it`s tall but his technique was always great!!
problem is, lyric tenors mess up their careers by delving into the heavier pieces to early.... he is best as a lyric tenor. If he were to slip into some Wagner or something, it would hopefully be waayyy later in his career. (btw, aguacun... Florez will undoubtedly be singing @ 50)
Sometimes I think this guy should try some countertenor stuff. No voice can get any lighter than this. I think he should do as well as a dramatic countertenor.
countertenors are singing in falsetto, which is not the same as singing lightly. completely different kinds of voice. most countertenors in their "real" voice are light baritones, not tenors.
Florez is a fabulous tenor! Mickey Mouse is the one that responded so

Uh yeah, ok, and? What does that have to do with Florez?? Aside from the fact that your comment is totally unsubstantial and inane, Florez is a tenore leggiero, not a lyric spinto tenor.

JavieritoReynaldo 3 years ago
Abrazo

Florez is the perfect Rossini singer. To his credit, he has yet to reach out to heavier roles that will darken his voice. Like Pavarotti when he was quite young, Florez seemingly sings without any effort whatever. Thank you for this beautiful video.

I'd like to see the singer, the conductor and the orchestra, but nothing else and I do apologize to the person who made this up.

while this is a fantastic voice, bocelli's voice is far more fantastic, take away his vocal technique, but his voice is far superior
libetta 4 years ago
As a man who has been round the block I'm worried that the top will be blown off this voice by singing too many high notes. That would be a pity. If you have a cadillac you should polish it and ride it once in a while. I gather you're a bocelli fan
jblo9 4 years ago
i don't really get your point, pls be frank and go straight the point
libetta 4 years ago
Have you any idea how difficult this piece is? Floreez appears to be it's master. It's a star voice. Study, learn repertoire and perform this kind of thing only occasionally. Leave the punters amazed and wanting more.
jblo9 4 years ago
what do you have against bocelli though?
libetta 4 years ago
dearest, pls listen to the two voices one after the other and you'll know the difference.
Boccelli is a nice man and a pleasant singer, but has nothing to do with opera.
BABAZOOEY 4 years ago 2
The point is: you don't know music! Stop acting like a musician. If you want to be in the music circle, study , study , then you may criticize.
alhambra14 4 years ago
Libetta, you act like you know classical music. For your education and future musical referrence: this is great voice and artistry. A graduate of Curtis Instiute. Do you know where it is?

guillermojuan 4 years ago
Very nice technique, Being a lyric Leggiero I identify alot with this voice type more. He does not have the heavy voice that Rossini wrote for in this aria, The tenor needs to have powerfull top, middle and bottom. It's strong for him at top but the orchestra eats away at him as it loweres. Still great job.
Opera19 4 years ago
This is heavier Rossini. He does not quite ride over the orchestras. He does not have the heroic heft to do this piece justice. That said, he does a superb job with what he has. He "sings as dramatically as he can" to quote Cesare Valletti about himself.

A nice, high lyric tenor singing a strong Rossini piece. Well-sung! Wish I could have been in the hall where this was recorded.
bradleyjenks 4 years ago
Araiza - I liked the voice. "Benedicta" was scary - not suave. His chest collapses regularly. It may have made his high sections.. muscular. Is it a fair representation? Is this an odd movie, with "Rossini" listening?
Costello - FRESH! Nice depth, warmth. Bad hair day. This is a voice to emulate, and seems to be a musician, as well!
Neither do rotten "operatic" scooping, thanks!

What is really appreciable is the deep religious feeling in his singing. He keeps this line and misses some ocasions to make a brilliant display of his marvelous voice. Young but wise, modest and with great potential. We all wish him the very best.
nlupos 4 years ago

Villazon

I've always felt this way about Florez.
Tenorboy29307 4 years ago
As a future spinto/lyric tenor, I'll say it's quite the temptation to jump into parts like Rodolfo, and Pinkerton at an early age when you feel your voice is ready for this stuff. Not to mention that once you get out there if you're a lyric tenor, better perform parts like Fenton and Tonio since they're for a light lyric and can be performed with ease and not forcing the tone
marcomeatball 4 years ago
Sometimes I think this guy should try some countertenor stuff. No voice can get any lighter than this. I think he should do as well as a dramatic countertenor.
dchemaly396 4 years ago
You said:"No voice can get any lighter than this". Well... ecco la prova! He is NOT a countertenor but a tenor that... well... I´ll better say that I do not like him. I doubt he will still singing at the age of 50.
aguacun 4 years ago
His voice is totally non-abused and ideally suited to the music and his delivery. He uses it perfectly, no strain or affectation. Wish we could say that of Pavarotti. This is what we tenors should take as the standard, assuming he is singing as accurately as Joshua Bell plays.
Do note that this is 2003.
PietVanA 4 years ago
I love Florez voice but I also love Pavarottis his voice is darker and heavier than Florez but he sanged great up -95 and by then he was 60 years old and his way of living (to much food and to little exercise) took it`s tall but his technique was always great!!
Bjoerrelli 4 years ago
i couldn't agree. pav's voice was not only darker, it was thicker and lighter too. hear the way he reaches high notes with ease? also more resonant
libetta 4 years ago
problem is, lyric tenors mess up their careers by delving into the heavier pieces to early.... he is best as a lyric tenor. If he were to slip into some Wagner or something, it would hopefully be waayyy later in his career. (btw, aguacun... Florez will undoubtedly be singing @ 50)
ares7768 4 years ago

As if
As if that existed!
This is a TENOR, REAL TENOR. ABSOLUTELY nothing to do with countertenor.
OMG, estupido!

countertenors are singing in falsetto, which is not the same as singing lightly. completely different kinds of voice. most countertenors in their "real" voice are light baritones, not tenors.
