It's called "takadimi," or at least that's what Westerners call it...it's a traditional Eastern way of keeping time and voicing rhythms (ta + ka + di + mi = 1 + 2 + 3 + 4, and ta +ke + ta = 1 + 2 + 3) that evolved into percussion scat as you called it. It's especially useful in odd meters like 7/4 where it's much easier and faster to say takadimitaketa instead of 1234567. Here's a vid of Trilok later in his life where he uses the technique extensively: watch?v=0WeEYEoCDsE
Aha, thanks for the explanation, there had to be a system to it, I was just unaware - certainly a change from drum percussion, to taking the rhythm to the vocal level
can anyone tell me anything at all about what either of them are speaking here. what they are saying.....arent they great....love em....addicted and have been for a while.....kushti bok....
I was lucky enough to see Gurtu perform live in the early '90's in a small venue in Chicago, and his performance was probably the most stunning show of drumming I've ever seen, even better than live performances I've seen by Bozzio, Chambers, Bruford and Peart.
In my opinion, Trilok Gurtu is the best percussionist in the world. I've never seen or heard of anyone better then him. The thing he does has nothing to do with western (labeled) forms of music. He plays the rythm of life and death, of elements, of earth and water, of human spirit and grace. The best!
It's so beautiful to see such a human being creating music.
Orient Express is a Joe Zawinul tune. This performance is obviously live and you may have to look for a while to find a recording of this exact show, but I know Joe put out an album with Orient Express on it. Just look it up. You can also rip audio from youtube with a couple of different programs, which might work for you. hope this helps
Now I like this, moving a lot more and I like that, and vocals too adds to it. Guy can play that key board so show us some more, Please. This is a great Part two, What energy they are putting out. Love to be there LIVE. What a thrill that would be. 7:32 Love the keyboard. WOW!!!!!
Joe and Chick are both extremely good in different ways. I don't like to think of one as better than the other. They are both creative geniuses, capable of producing vast amounts of amazing music! They also have unique approaches to music. I enjoy them both the same amount.
Joe Zawinul and Trilok Gurtu.....two uncommon music explorers. We must be grateful to their music approach, to their versatility. Joe, I hope you're on a numb jamming with Jaco. You taught us the fusion.
wow ... how did this guy die? the keyboardist was "blown away"? what happened? can someone reply to me. thanks. very talented musicians. wow. thanks for the post.
Wow. Zawinul of course was voted greatest keyboard player in the world by his peers at Downbeat for 35 years in a row. Hmmmm. What an incredible piece and what an astonishing climax!
What is Gurto doing - percussion scat? I know it's traditional

Joe Z. improvisation glory days!
Trilok reminds me of Shakti tabla pleyers(Zakir Husain) who use rythmic phrases with their mouth before the play it in tabla.
It is really eurimatic!!!
JimiXpresion 3 years ago
This is called "bol", which means "word".
Before an Indian music learner learns to play a tune or rhythm, he has to be able sing it.
Each syllable is symbols a specific "note" on the tabla.
