  • What is Gurto doing - percussion scat? I know it's traditional

  • @SupernalOne

It's called "takadimi," or at least that's what Westerners call it...it's a traditional Eastern way of keeping time and voicing rhythms (ta + ka + di + mi = 1 + 2 + 3 + 4, and ta +ke + ta = 1 + 2 + 3) that evolved into percussion scat as you called it. It's especially useful in odd meters like 7/4 where it's much easier and faster to say takadimitaketa instead of 1234567. Here's a vid of Trilok later in his life where he uses the technique extensively: watch?v=0WeEYEoCDsE

  • @19andoverlol

Aha, thanks for the explanation, there had to be a system to it, I was just unaware - certainly a change from drum percussion, to taking the rhythm to the vocal level

  • pretty!!!

  • It is simply fantástico (pt. 1 of course, too). Thank you very much for uploading this masterpiece.

  • I was lucky enough to see Gurtu perform live in the early '90's in a small venue in Chicago, and his performance was probably the most stunning show of drumming I've ever seen, even better than live performances I've seen by Bozzio, Chambers, Bruford and Peart.

  • Two plus 1....that's love....Thank you, marg

  • Can I somewhere download full concert?

  • @balogmichael yes on emule you can find it

Music surely is a universal language.

  • and he does this all while sitting on the floor.

    anyone could help?

    thanks!!

  • no mamaron,,,ese wey toka de poca madre trilok es el padre dotodos los percusionistas,,,,, soy de mexico

  • Magnificent morningtune!! Geniouses both of them.

  • Magnifique!

  • In my opinion, Trilok Gurtu is the best percussionist in the world. I've never seen or heard of anyone better then him. The thing he does has nothing to do with western (labeled) forms of music. He plays the rythm of life and death, of elements, of earth and water, of human spirit and grace. The best!

It's so beautiful to see such a human being creating music.

  • whats with the thumbs down to this comment? i totally agree with it. Trilok is just.. incredible!

  • very nice......performance power

  • What a great performance

  • trilok is a god!!!

  • so are these guys together known as the band orient express or is that a song or album or what?

i just want to know what cd to look for xD

  • Orient Express is a Joe Zawinul tune. This performance is obviously live and you may have to look for a while to find a recording of this exact show, but I know Joe put out an album with Orient Express on it. Just look it up. You can also rip audio from youtube with a couple of different programs, which might work for you. hope this helps

  • Orient Express is on 75th a new album that came out in 2009.

  • Now I like this, moving a lot more and I like that, and vocals too adds to it. Guy can play that key board so show us some more, Please. This is a great Part two, What energy they are putting out. Love to be there LIVE. What a thrill that would be. 7:32 Love the keyboard. WOW!!!!!

  • Aaaah Joe, R.I.P.

Now Then.... This post is smokin, Digimaton. All the best onya & just sub'd right away. Send ya's a friend invite later.

  • Excellent!!!

Does anybody know if there's a live footage of "Watapa", which appears on the "Trilok Gurtu Collection" CD?

I wish I could see Trilok and Co. playing this song live...

    Anyhow, thanks for sharing.

  • Man trilok is fuckin awesome. Same with zawinul, the combination of em is simply crazy. keep the jazz flowin folks.

  • divine.

  • 2 genius!!

  • Thanks for this awesome video !

  • Incredible Mr. Zawinul plays with a lot of synths, sequencers, vocoders in a very innovative way. T.Gurtu master

  • This is insane

  • Joe Z. improvisation glory days!

Trilok reminds me of Shakti tabla pleyers(Zakir Husain) who use rythmic phrases with their mouth before the play it in tabla.

    It is really eurimatic!!!

  • This is called "bol", which means "word".

Before an Indian music learner learns to play a tune or rhythm, he has to be able sing it.

Each syllable is symbols a specific "note" on the tabla.

  • lol. it's really funny to see these two guys producing sounds with hands, feet, mouth. no limits. great stuff! music is about PLAYING. :)

    R.I.P. Joe.

  • This is musical legend. To be listened to and appreciated for ever more.

  • this is good but i like chick corea more..

  • Joe and Chick are both extremely good in different ways. I don't like to think of one as better than the other. They are both creative geniuses, capable of producing vast amounts of amazing music! They also have unique approaches to music. I enjoy them both the same amount.

  • As Joe Zawinul said, "Nana's berimbau is all fluff and no substance!"

  • FANTASTIC !!!!!!!!

  • Holy shit this is amazing. R.I.P Joe. :-)

  • A coisa mais inovadora e linda deste mundo!!!

  • amazing fills

  • two gods!

  • MESMERIZING !!!

  • I can't explain why, but this music just...absorbs me far more then other kind of music I like..

  • Joe Zawinul and Trilok Gurtu.....two uncommon music explorers. We must be grateful to their music approach, to their versatility. Joe, I hope you're on a numb jamming with Jaco. You taught us the fusion.

  • What a drumer ! AMEN !!!

  • alegria, placer,sensualidad,juego,maestria,gracias

  • Why the hell Duke rob would Jaco Pastorius and Josef Zawinul be jamming a Pink floyd song!

    Idiot

  • This is sheer greatness in sound.

  • Two masters! You will be missed, Mr.Gone

  • Unbelievable!!

  • fascinant!

  • MERCY,MERCY,MERCY!

  • wow ... how did this guy die? the keyboardist was "blown away"? what happened? can someone reply to me. thanks. very talented musicians. wow. thanks for the post.

    kris

  • Joe past away from a rare cancer. RIP

  • it is not a "keybordist". It is the great joe Zawinul :)

  • nobody can beat him

  • Another giant's blown away. I hope Joe and Jaco are jammin on comfortable numb! Thanks for your dreams, Mr. Zawinul!

  • Man i love joe's compositions...

    r.i.p.

  • rest in peace joe!

  • In paradiso, in paradiso! Ciao Joe!

  • Joe Z made this world a better place, and his legacy will live forever. Josef Erich Zawinul (July 7, 1932 -- September 11, 2007)

  • like the syncopation

  • Does it get any better than this? Chills.....what is the year of this performance?

  • joe is my new hero!

  • Check out Zawinul at ca 4:10, this is good old genius Zawi at his best! 10 stars!

  • Excellent. With the theme from 'Mi Gente'.

  • Wow. Zawinul of course was voted greatest keyboard player in the world by his peers at Downbeat for 35 years in a row. Hmmmm. What an incredible piece and what an astonishing climax!

  • I would have to take some serious drugs to write/play something like this....well done however

  • Fusionnels.

  • Trilok Gurtu. What can be said of a man who plays a drumset kneeling? Amazing. Way to rock the the vocoder Joe.

  • the holiest of molies!
