I don't know if you are aware, that English, German, Dutch and the Scandinavian languages all come from the same origin.

But it seems like in this particular case, the Australian might have changed the pronounciation in the same way, that Germans did hundreds of years ago - or maybe change it back to how it was pronouced then...
