In the military they use phonetics as code words. Halo 2 was clearly the hardest.

There's a difference between time it takes to complete and difficulty.

Halo 2 had the difficulty that meant you may find it impossible to get past some bits with those Jackal Snipers.

Halo 3/Halo ODST/Halo Reach are where it changes every time so eventually you will find a lucky spot you manage to get through and get a checkpoint.

That is what makes Halo 2 the hardest game.

For Halo 1, it was easier that Halo 2 but kept the same concept of its difficulty.
