This postwar film is deep and thoughtful and all the more so in cotrast to most of the comments here which range from ludicrous to infantile. The guiding premise here-democracy vs. despotism begins in the local community + as go communities, so goes a nation-is one largely lost on an attendance that hasn't experienced this truism in full force. There are many communities in u.s. ever slouching toward despotism and going all the way if not for a larger democratic system protected by the Federal.
Funny how the comments reflect a mentality of denial oblivious that the constitutional republic of America is DEAD as they hold onto what they were taught in school or the dictionary. Note that Obama was a COMMUNITY leader; community is the grassroots level to covert a republic into despotism & the definition of "communism" is "communalism" stressing shared resources & wealth where the individual & self-worth is annihilated. This video mirrors the current state of Obamas America.
Damn in any democratic society i have seen their is aways a large gap bettween rich and poor. the media is away's liberal controlled. yet In civcs class we a told they are the more open less dicrimnatory in terms of poltitical views.

I just realized that this film is not teaching principles of Liberty, but is in fact teaching socialism through Democracy! Power is not shared in a Republic, it is seperated and balanced and respect is not shared because opinions and freedom of thought and speech are protected to each individual. The solution to conflicts of interest cannot be resolved so easily as postulating "mythological" freedoms with magical properties.

This video is kind of depressing to watch because it's so true. It's happened over and over throughout history and it's been underway and progressing each and everyday in this country.
I think we used to be a much smarter society...this film is prophetic to the core. - Tbarbe, I'd like to point something out, and this is from a purely Christian standpoint so you do not have to listen to me.
. . . Actually anyone who comments on this can think what they want to think and say what they want to say. Free speech. another reason why we are Democratic.
Actually, the form of government we have is a republic, not a democracy. In a democracy, everyone votes for the decision. In a republic, we elect officials (such as Congress) to make the decisons. In a society our size (roughly 300 mil), it would not be possible to have that many people vote for every particular item that Congress does every day.
Regardless, that video is a bit scary when applied to America today.
This man makes some great points, but if you believe that America is close to despotism you should move to North Korea. You can not control the media because of the internet.
"time to load the guns, fellow patriots. Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition."-MiddletownDreamz. I hope you know you're an idiot. Get out of America for five seconds.. We aren't even close to the scale.
America is quickly becoming Amerika; heading down the road to NAZI/Soviet tyranny. Time to load the guns, fellow patriots. Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition.
This film, when watched with its sequel, "Idiocracy " (2006) basically depicts everything you need to know about the trajectory we're on. It would be nice if our congress ould grow some spine. Id like to see some anti-corporate legacy.
Yes, "Idiocracy" was certainly an underappreciated piece of work by Mike Judge. I specifically enjoyed the introduction, explaining how the stupidifying of American citizens occurred.
The right to free speech is great, but if nobody can hear you it's worthless.
Yes, we on the net read many different opinions but the dominant communicators are the large television and news congolomerates. Government does not control media, instead corporations (Those media darlings!) control the government.
We haven't controlled our own government for decades.
"If you think there are signs of Despotism in America you either don't know much about the world or you don't know what the word means." - joemo77
I agree with Joemo. America has very little despotic attitudes. I agree that too much tax is on the poor and not enough on the rich. The idea that our Goverment runs the media is untrue.
You have got to be kidding me. We are so close to Despotism. The broadcast media used to be controlled by many different companies. It is now controlled by only 5 corporations. It is not in their best interest to be forthcoming in the news. Why do you think the truth about the presidents lies regarding Iraq were not widely distributed but known? GE owns NBC, but make most of their money building bombs. Think about it.
1. Patriot Act/Military Commissions Act gives the President sole control over your freedom. 2. Signing statements and rubber stamp Repukes remove power from the Legislature. 3. Whistle blowers fired, ridiculed, and so much more...
It must be nice living under a rock and not being able to see the forest for the trees. Watch the video again and decide how much respect and power you have, and how much economic distribution and distribution of information exists under your rock.
That is hyperbolic though. Racist, misogynistic, propagandistic 'educational videos' have been prevelent throughout the last quarter century. So there are upsides and downsides.
Republicans want to tax only the poor and middle class, already do control the media, and despise education -- and they're NOT despotic? So basically, you didn't comprehend one single thing you've seen, either in this video or in reality.
BTW Democrats want the rich to pay their fair share, want to restore fairness-in-media laws, and yes, they think a strong education is essential to a functioning and free society. Thanks for providing the platform to point that out.
geo1671, in 1919 a political party was founded in Germany called the National Socialist German Worker's Party, a member of whom was called a "Nationalsozialist," and this was shortened to "Nazi" which is nothing more than a contraction of that word (NAtionalsoZIalist --> Nazi, got it?). It is also why Nazi is pronounced with a hard "t" (Nat-ze, instead of Nah-ze), because of the root word from which it is derived. It has nothing to do with the Ashkenazi Jews, you dolt.
"Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed" - Dwight Eisenhower - Supreme Allied Commander

"We shall have World Government, whether or not we like it. The only questions is whether World Government will be achieved by conquest or consent." - Paul Warburg (architect of the Federal Reserve System), to the US Senate, 1950
H.L. Mencken said it well: "The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary."
The corporate grip on opinion in the United States is one of the wonders of the Western world. No First World country has ever managed to eliminate so entirely from its media all objectivity - much less dissent.
"It is possibly the oldest, easily the most profitable, surely the most vicious. It is the only one international in scope. It is the only one in which the profits are reckoned in dollars and the losses in lives. "
More Nazi bashing---What is not told was that the Nazi party was funded and created by USA. The odd thing was that in realty the Nazi regime was controlled by Jewish Zionists.U Question this ? Then where did the term Nazi come from ?--Ashkenazi Jews !
God didn't found this Republic, men did. Thomas Jefferson was as Christian as a Unitarian is. I love listening to Christians decry Democracy, considering their man, Bush is in power.
A good vid. I agree. I happen to worship Jesus' lesser known younger brother, Shecky. I know many claim he didn't even exist, but it's my right to worship as I please... and also to force those not falling in line with Shecky's commandment to give 60% of income to those with the number 3 in their nicknames to pay up or else go to KBR's concentration camps.
When given two horrendous 'choices' (ex. Bush or Clinton?) What do you choose? Do you really have any choice? Do you have any power whatsoever?Define 'Democracy' please!
Nice video, though the chart with "Democracy" at the top [meaning they meant it as an ideal to live up to] creeped me out! We are a Constitutional Republic, or at least that is how it used to be...
Ambassador72 it creeps me out that you don't understand the concept of learning to share authority with all people which was founding ideology that Thomas Jefferson and founders were moving towards. The republic was used as a tool to give structure for democracy; instead we have turned it upside down and it is now an oligarchy.
DEMOCRACY, n. [Gr. People, and to possess, to govern.] Government by the people; a form of government, in which the supreme power is lodged in the hands of the people collectively, or in which the people exercise the powers of legislation. Such was the government of Athens.
You are right. "We the people" must ACT to secure our Rights under our GOD-Given Constitutional Republic. Democracy is the worst form of Government, never trade TRUE Liberty for IMAGINARY Security. Informed consent for True Democracy is not possible when Wicked deceivers usurp the throne from the apostate masses, uneducated and brainwashed. Pray for America, maybe it's not too late ?
I have blocked ommonet from my YouTube experience as he is trying to stir up comments on this video by harassing me. So I suppose it worked, in the long run.
My family has been part of the USA since before it was formed. We were persecuted Hugonauts from Europe, being burned at the stake for not vowing submission to a Pope. We've fought in every conflict this nation had. My great grandfather was the commanding American officer under Allenby when Jeruselum was taken from the Turks in WW1.
You came to my YOUTUBE and spouted nonsense, creating confusion and strife. When I respo´nd you insult and curse at me. I don't ask for you to bring that kind of traffic. Don't turn thins around. Stop 'digging up trouble' and wasting my time. Good Riddance.
Re: 1. This video is clearly meant to be applied to our government.
Re: 2. Sariwat1's quotes refer to fundamental principles. You can disagree with them, but they were meant to apply across people and through time. I think they endure. You don't appear to share Tom and Ben's principles.
M.L. King plagiarized and committed adultery, but we still think of him as a great man. Same with Tom.
This video puts "democracy" at the good end of an ideal spectrum. All Sarwat1 and I are saying is that Liberty should be at the good end, not democracy. Pure democracy is the tyranny of the majority. The founders did not want that. They wanted a Republic that defended our equal, individual rights to life, liberty and property, not democracy. Their plan used some democratic elements, but ours is NOT a democracy.
I guess you could call the USA, as envisioned in the Constitution, a republic with some democratic elements.
"Republics decline into democracies and democracies degenerate into despotisms." Aristotle
I think we are already beyond the democracy phase and are heading into despotism. R's and D's are both responsible for this slide, because they routinely ignore the Constitution in order to win votes from the people who no longer understand or value it.
I have libertarian leanings as well. Surely you understand the principle of "Consent of the Governed". That, combined with the rule of Law and open Ethical debate, is what I believe in.
But it is the right to vote for your government, otherwise called "democracy", which enables these basic liberties. Without a vote, you have no voice, and thus do not make your own decisions.
You are thinking of a modern-day definition of the word democracy. This film was made in 1947 - keep that in mind.
Your vote does not "enable" basic liberties. Your basic liberties exist because you own yourself. That government is best which best defends our natural rights. Both the film's and the modern conception of democracy is flawed. Sarwat1 and my point is that the founders knew the true nature of democracy, and only empbraced it as a necessary evil.
You have proven yourself as ignorant of history as you are of reality. Nothing is innate to a human being save for Free Will, despite what you may "believe". Freedom itself is granted or restricted by government - if you like it or not does not change reality.
End of discussion from my angle.
Go find a philosophy professor to debate intangibles with - reality is all that matters.
What is there to debate in history, the country was founded as a Constitutional Republic Period. Second a constitutional Republic allows voting of representatives into government so it doesn't mean this country is a democracy.
A constitutional republic is a state where the head of state and other officials are elected as representatives of the people and must govern according to existing constitutional law that limits the government's power over citizens. In a constitutional republic, executive, legislative, and judicial powers are separated into distinct branches and the will of the majority of the population is tempered by protections for individual rights so that no individual or group has absolute power.
The fact that a constitution exists that limits the government's power, makes the state constitutional. That the head(s) of state and other officials are chosen by election, rather than inheriting their positions, and that their decisions are subject to judicial review makes a state republican.
Self-ownership is also innate. Don't you think you own your own body? Our basic rights to life, liberty and property come directly from our innate self-ownership.
Governments don't GIVE us our rights. Good governments DEFEND them. Evil socialist governments assume THEY own us and try to restrict instead of defending our rights. Subtle, but important point.
Point is that the Dumbed down masses don't realize Democracy is the worst form of Government. It always end´s in Depotism. It's ridiculous when Bush and those like him justify atrocities in the name of Democracy ( eg. make the world safe for democracy) but heck, claiming you are a Christian when not, and saying that God supports an Unholy war are far worse violations. I lost count ...
it wasn't my intention to comment on the video. It is my intention to communicate that America is founded as a Constitutional Republic and the Founding Fathers were against it. It is to reach the people who watch this clip but not a comment on the clip itself.
What misalignment? Put those quote in google and find out for yourself. You should read about the founding fathers and what they say from time to time, you may learn something.
Sariwat1 is actually right. The video promotes democracy. That is one of the four "scales" of dictatorship. The point is that under democracy, the minority has no rights, and no respect. The founders did not create a democracy. They created a republic, and the power of the majority is limited by the Constitution. I am so glad that Ben and Tom were not democrats!
Intolerance of ideas you don't like, perhaps? And just so you know, I'm not politically aligned. I find such organizations thoroughly corrupt and only interested in maintaining their power base.
Rate yourself on this scale. Are you democratic or despotic? In your own mind?
When I said that Ben and Tom were not democrats, I meant it as I wrote it, with a small d. I know they were not members of the Democratic Party. That didn't even exist yet. I am agreeing with Sarwat1 that Ben and Tom were not PHILOSOPHICAL democrats. They did not believe in democracy. They beleived in limited government, individual rights and Liberty. Don't you?
On the scale of despotic to libertarian, I am 100% libertarian. I do not fall on the scale you refer to because I oppose both poles. I oppose authoritarianism and I oppose unlimited democracy. Each is merely another form of tyranny. Under unlimited democracy, minorities can have no rights. The ultimate minority is the individual.
you re so ignorant. You refer to ancient greek concepts to define democracy. Today democracy is primarily defined by a regime that respects minority rights. A democratic constitution prevents minority opression strictly. And a constitutional court (Us equivalent is the US Supreme Court) reviews the laws that are made by majority. That court nullifies the laws if they are against minority rights. I recommend you to read Alexis De Tocquivelle Democracy in America
I've read De Tocquville. I'm afriad it is you who do not know what democracy is. Pure democracy is when the majority rules, not when minorities' rights are defended. These are opposites, my friend. When the white majority can vote to suppress a black minority, that is democracy in action. We live in a republic with some democratic elements, not a pure democracy. Our Constitution limits the tyranny of the majority in favor of individual rights. The individual is the ultimate minority.
Listen guy, just because you read something in a book doesn't make it Universally applicable. What do you think Ben meant by "contesting the vote"? What does that sound like to your "enlightened" mind? Sounds like a rule of procedure, meant to ensure civil rights through liberty or some other process, most likely DEMOCRATIC in nature. And Thomas Jefferson was talking about election process, not philosophically generalizing about how much he disliked Democracy.
Ben's lamb has a gun. Doesn't sound like much of an election process or rule of procedure to me. It sounds more like your natural, individual right to self defense. Sariwat1 is interpreting old Ben properly.
How much right to self defense do you think you'd have without the democratic process? Do you honestly believe a handful of guys in the mid-1700's were the end-all be-all of government? They knew they weren't - thus the amendment process.
Man, you're just talking in circles. I don't feel like debating you anymore. You're not making any sense.
Might want to think real hard about how you came to have Freedom - it wasn't given to you by a corporation or a President.
Perhaps part of our problem understanding each other comes from having different definitions for "rights." You seem to think that rights come from governments. I believe that rights are natural, and come before governments. Your right to self defense comes from self-ownership, not from the 2nd Amendment.
Great you brought that up. Self Defense is a GOD given right. Hence Un Alienable by any Gov. or Entity. The Spirit of US Laws (eg. Constitution) guarantees the right to defend yourself, from what would define which Ammendment to invoke. The Swiss can vouch for the importance of armed Free citizens. Viva le 2nd Ammendment
ommmonet- I find it interesting that you mentioned God. "Self Defense is a GOD given right" I can think of no greater despot than god. Think of the intolerance of religion in general and watch your video again as you do.
google constitutional republic and read. Stop grabbing info out of thin air. Thin air doesn't have the facts. If you are going to speak about it, at least do the research. If they wanted democracy, they would have founded this nation as a democracy. It was founded as a Republic, only to be twisted later.
It was CALLED a republic, but that was just marketing spin. It was really a dictatorship. Soviet Russia was called "communistic" but it was really socialistic. That was more marketing spin. Our country is sliding towards socialistic dictatorship. The tyranny of the majority is being used to destroy individual liberty. Our leaders are fooling the masses.

The primary purpose of our republic is to "protect the minority of the opulent (wealthy) from the tyranny of the majority" (James Madison)
The constitution didn't prevent additional corruption. 9th and 10th amendments prohibit government from usurping rights, but legislators do it anyway.
Any government with few people in power gets corrupted. The real power is legislation, not voting.
Republics fail. What to replace the government with if not direct democracy?

. . . Actually anyone who comments on this can think what they want to think and say what they want to say. Free speech. another reason why we are Democratic.
But one thing I read makes me infuriated.
soccerd00d101 4 years ago
Actually, the form of government we have is a republic, not a democracy. In a democracy, everyone votes for the decision. In a republic, we elect officials (such as Congress) to make the decisons. In a society our size (roughly 300 mil), it would not be possible to have that many people vote for every particular item that Congress does every day.
Regardless, that video is a bit scary when applied to America today.

It is also why Nazi is pronounced with a hard "t" (Nat-ze, instead of Nah-ze), because of the root word from which it is derived. It has nothing to do with the Ashkenazi Jews, you dolt.

Same with Tom.
freesk8 4 years ago
This video puts "democracy" at the good end of an ideal spectrum. All Sarwat1 and I are saying is that Liberty should be at the good end, not democracy. Pure democracy is the tyranny of the majority. The founders did not want that. They wanted a Republic that defended our equal, individual rights to life, liberty and property, not democracy. Their plan used some democratic elements, but ours is NOT a democracy.
freesk8 4 years ago
I guess you could call the USA, as envisioned in the Constitution, a republic with some democratic elements.
"Republics decline into democracies and democracies degenerate into despotisms." Aristotle
I think we are already beyond the democracy phase and are heading into despotism. R's and D's are both responsible for this slide, because they routinely ignore the Constitution in order to win votes from the people who no longer understand or value it.
freesk8 4 years ago
I have libertarian leanings as well. Surely you understand the principle of "Consent of the Governed". That, combined with the rule of Law and open Ethical debate, is what I believe in.
But it is the right to vote for your government, otherwise called "democracy", which enables these basic liberties. Without a vote, you have no voice, and thus do not make your own decisions.
You are thinking of a modern-day definition of the word democracy. This film was made in 1947 - keep that in mind.
Stroopinator 4 years ago
Your vote does not "enable" basic liberties. Your basic liberties exist because you own yourself. That government is best which best defends our natural rights. Both the film's and the modern conception of democracy is flawed. Sarwat1 and my point is that the founders knew the true nature of democracy, and only empbraced it as a necessary evil.
freesk8 4 years ago
You have proven yourself as ignorant of history as you are of reality. Nothing is innate to a human being save for Free Will, despite what you may "believe". Freedom itself is granted or restricted by government - if you like it or not does not change reality.
End of discussion from my angle.
Go find a philosophy professor to debate intangibles with - reality is all that matters.
Good evening, and goodbye.
Stroopinator 4 years ago
What is there to debate in history, the country was founded as a Constitutional Republic Period. Second a constitutional Republic allows voting of representatives into government so it doesn't mean this country is a democracy.
sariwat1 4 years ago
Sariwat was right, period.
ommmonet 4 years ago
A constitutional republic is a state where the head of state and other officials are elected as representatives of the people and must govern according to existing constitutional law that limits the government's power over citizens. In a constitutional republic, executive, legislative, and judicial powers are separated into distinct branches and the will of the majority of the population is tempered by protections for individual rights so that no individual or group has absolute power.
sariwat1 4 years ago
The fact that a constitution exists that limits the government's power, makes the state constitutional. That the head(s) of state and other officials are chosen by election, rather than inheriting their positions, and that their decisions are subject to judicial review makes a state republican.
sariwat1 4 years ago
Sad to see you go, Stroop.
Subtle, but important point.
freesk8 4 years ago
Point is that the Dumbed down masses don't realize Democracy is the worst form of Government. It always end´s in Depotism. It's ridiculous when Bush and those like him justify atrocities in the name of Democracy ( eg. make the world safe for democracy) but heck, claiming you are a Christian when not, and saying that God supports an Unholy war are far worse violations. America was founded as a Constitutional Republic and not a Democracy. The founding fathers were actually against democracy.
"Democracy is nothing more than mob rule, where 51% of the people may take away the rights of the other 49" - Thomas Jefferson
"Democracy is Two Wolves and a Lamb Voting on What to have for Lunch. Liberty is a Well-Armed Lamb Contesting the Vote" - Benjamin Franklin

sariwat1 4 years ago
What misalignment? Put those quote in google and find out for yourself. You should read about the founding fathers and what they say from time to time, you may learn something.
sariwat1 4 years ago
Sariwat1 is actually right. The video promotes democracy. That is one of the four "scales" of dictatorship. The point is that under democracy, the minority has no rights, and no respect. The founders did not create a democracy. They created a republic, and the power of the majority is limited by the Constitution. I am so glad that Ben and Tom were not democrats!
freesk8 4 years ago
"Ben and Tom were not Democrats!"
Intolerance of ideas you don't like, perhaps? And just so you know, I'm not politically aligned. I find such organizations thoroughly corrupt and only interested in maintaining their power base.
Rate yourself on this scale. Are you democratic or despotic? In your own mind?
I know what I am.
Stroopinator 4 years ago
When I said that Ben and Tom were not democrats, I meant it as I wrote it, with a small d. I know they were not members of the Democratic Party. That didn't even exist yet. I am agreeing with Sarwat1 that Ben and Tom were not PHILOSOPHICAL democrats. They did not believe in democracy. They beleived in limited government, individual rights and Liberty. Don't you?
freesk8 4 years ago
On the scale of despotic to libertarian, I am 100% libertarian. I do not fall on the scale you refer to because I oppose both poles. I oppose authoritarianism and I oppose unlimited democracy. Each is merely another form of tyranny. Under unlimited democracy, minorities can have no rights. The ultimate minority is the individual.
freesk8 4 years ago
you re so ignorant. I recommend you to read Alexis De Tocquivelle Democracy in America
otamtotamtamm 4 years ago
I've read De Tocquville. I'm afriad it is you who do not know what democracy is. Pure democracy is when the majority rules, not when minorities' rights are defended. These are opposites, my friend. When the white majority can vote to suppress a black minority, that is democracy in action. We live in a republic with some democratic elements, not a pure democracy. Our Constitution limits the tyranny of the majority in favor of individual rights. The individual is the ultimate minority.
freesk8 4 years ago
Listen guy, just because you read something in a book doesn't make it Universally applicable. What do you think Ben meant by "contesting the vote"? What does that sound like to your "enlightened" mind? Sounds like a rule of procedure, meant to ensure civil rights through liberty or some other process, most likely DEMOCRATIC in nature. And Thomas Jefferson was talking about election process, not philosophically generalizing about how much he disliked Democracy.
Stroopinator 4 years ago
Ben's lamb has a gun. Doesn't sound like much of an election process or rule of procedure to me. It sounds more like your natural, individual right to self defense. Sariwat1 is interpreting old Ben properly.
freesk8 4 years ago
How much right to self defense do you think you'd have without the democratic process? Do you honestly believe a handful of guys in the mid-1700's were the end-all be-all of government? They knew they weren't - thus the amendment process.
Man, you're just talking in circles. I don't feel like debating you anymore. You're not making any sense.
Might want to think real hard about how you came to have Freedom - it wasn't given to you by a corporation or a President.
Stroopinator 4 years ago
Perhaps part of our problem understanding each other comes from having different definitions for "rights." You seem to think that rights come from governments. I believe that rights are natural, and come before governments. Your right to self defense comes from self-ownership, not from the 2nd Amendment.
freesk8 4 years ago
Great you brought that up. Self Defense is a GOD given right. Hence Un Alienable by any Gov. or Entity. The Spirit of US Laws (eg. Constitution) guarantees the right to defend yourself, from what would define which Ammendment to invoke. The Swiss can vouch for the importance of armed Free citizens. Viva le 2nd Ammendment
