Wish the great Thom had stayed and stirred the sheep in the UK to rid us of the shameful embarrassment of subservient idiots who still think monarchy is acceptable.
Thomas Paine. The most amazing and brave and dedicated men of the past 300 years. His work lives on in the minds and hearts of millions. His intellect and courage sowed the seeds of modern liberty. He almost single handedly ressurected the democratic notions of Ancient Greece. The lack of credit he recieves pains me even now. I urge everyone to read The Age of Reason. A book that despite being 200 years old, resonates with all who consider Reason supreme.
Paine - a brilliant mind who questioned the state of the herd. Do not accept things the way they are, perfection is ever fleeting under our complacency.
his portrait is in the Portrait Gallery in DC and on line, he certainly looks like a man of the people, I can see him standing in a cobblestone alley handing out that pamplet, when you look up the picture you might see it too. a rabblerouser, and he was at French Rev too, how odd?????? Glenn Beck's impression is an insult maybe Robert DeNero in Great Expectations.

Time for people to take responsibility for rights taken away.
Right to live my life. Right to my privacy. Right to not have people who do not have the right to be in my house. Right to expose the name of people who need to take responsibility for what they've done. Right to expose my family to people who have invaded their lives. Who are YOU to determine my rights and what are the rights of others and not mine?
Have people become too complacent with modern living? Have people forgotten the tyranny of subjugation to a king? Have people forgotten the horrors of slavery? Will they wake up before it is too late?
I respect that there are many people in the world with many ideas and points of view and ways of looking at things. Multiculturalism is great. Countries like Canada, the US, Britain etc are a huge mix of peoples and they are some of the safest and most technologically adept nations in the world. However, when someone says something that is obviously, completely wrong, that is not culture or religion or anything else; it's a lie. It's ignorance. Its bullshit. That MUST be stopped with education.
This is kinda one of the reasons why I think Atheists, Agnostics, and Deists get such a bad rap these days, because the overly religious overly zealous religious zealot type folks, see enlightening and non dogmatic ways of thinking dangerous for some reason. Because I think ultimately they are afraid of letting go of the comfort mechanism that faith and religious dogma provides at the cost of other peoples freedom of thought and liberties. So they seek to silence anyone going against them.
the theory of evolution caused a strong social conservatism movement in the minority.
very comparable to the muslim cultures response to the physical science's. while the west was in the dark ages the muslim world was in a age of reason and science in the aristotle tradition. in fact the muslim scholars actually invented the idea of proving your theory with experiments, but these scientific revolutions sparked a conservative back lash and the zealots won out over reason.
It takes about 20 years for the grade school and high school brainwashing to ware off, and realize the true genus of out Founding Fathers and their true vision of freedom and liberty, and far more important, the government structure to protect it.
Paine died in a flophouse in New York City. There's a plaque marking the spot. His bones were lost in transit at some point, so he doesn't even have a grave. One of our greatest Founding Fathers, and he's essentially forgotten by our society. It's terribly tragic.
Its a pathetic plaque sadly. His enemy william cobbett was the one that dug up his bones to give him a "proper" english burial. Six people attended his funeral because of his phenomenal works Age of Reason. What a great great man.
@johnclavis I personally believe that is on purpose the forgetting of paine, i am fairly known for my remembering of classes long after people forget and only seen Paine in two sentences in american history
Proud to share Mr. Paine's birthday

This comment has received too many negative votes show
HItchens simply wants the ignorant masses, the "commoners" to rise up against the Queen of England. The title
and power of the Crown as both head of
State and head of the Church of England
is the fly in his ointment. He wants a secularized, powerless state of Britain,
to join a neo-Fascist Secular world of European States. But the Sovereignty of
the Queen and the Church, is not acceptable to that Atheist Democidal
Union. So Hitchens must mock religion
to beguile for his outcome.

When Christipher Hitchens concludes that religiousness is evil, he practices the
technology of the religious, and makes a
comedy of it. If something was entirely evil, it would nullify itself and be undistinquished. If something was all
good, the same nullification occurs. The
fact is the God of the Bible is both, a God
of two hands, in a binary universe ,where
the human mind has two halfs, conception is by two sexes - Bible
speaks to good and evil, life and death,
heaven and hell.

Mr.Hitchens sounds like he's talking more of himself then Thomas Paine. He lies about Mr.Paine to make him look more like himself.
T.P wasn't a drunk!
T.P did think that the "right" (Deism) religion was good for people!
T.P didn't think "probably" there was an Author of Creation
T.P knew that there was an Author of the Creation!
Mr. Hitchens it's clear has an agenda with this slander that he paints on T.P.
Thomas Paine thought that the Atheist was a fool, and in this case I can see why!

You should probably never speak again.

No, you were just rated down by a lot of people for spouting off things that were not in the least bit true.

Ah a Glen Beck fan who takes his version over Paine and his bastadization of Paine's writings.
