Great insight Steven. I've been mulling over buying the hmc40 for a few months now. So I've gotta ask...how do you like it? From my research, I pretty sure this camera is the best @ this price point. Also, have you had any snags editing avchd? Would an intel i7 cpu eliminate some of the editing issues I've read about? Would love to know what software you use. Thanks, Steve 'mengimack'
I'm not at all disappointed with the HMC40. I love the amount of freedom in manual controls; a brand-new HMC40 for a little less than $2,000 is more than a great deal. Right now, it's just a bit more than $1,500 new, so if I were you, I'd snag that up. I agree with you in that it's the best camera at the price point. I tried comparing the HMC40 against others using their specs, reviews, etc. and couldn't really find anything close to what the HMC40 offered for me at its price.
As for editing the AVCHD content, I haven't much trouble working with it in Sony Vegas Pro, but I haven't shot much because I've been screenwriting a few projects for myself to film. Speaking of which, the HMC40 does need quite a bit of light for it to perform well, so if you're planning to film indoors and expect superb quality, I'd get three powerful lights. I'll have to get back to you on how much light is necessary for the minimum.
I can't tell you if an i7 Intel would solve those issues you mentioned because I don't know which ones you're referring to. But I can tell you that if Panasonic hasn't started removing Edius Neo 2, a powerful video editing program, you can get the program free with a new HMC40. I'd also make sure that the HMC40 you might be buying also come with "The HMC Book," because that is really helpful to understanding how to get the best out of the HMC40 & what some obscure functions are.
