  • Your not funky.

  • Lol he complains about the tonic water and the grass but earwax tastes fine

  • i wonder how lady gaga songs taste like - (i bet disgusting)

  • A better way to see how it feels to have synesthesia would be trying psychedelic drugs :)

  • Very interesting video.

However (and I'm not sure if this was pointed out before), but D to G is a Perfect Fourth and D to G# is an Augmented Fourth. You've got them switched around in the video. Can be fixed with an annotation.

  • I'm sound --> sight synesthete, but apparently I sense auras too. in a weird way.

I also got a great taste in music, because (heh, ironically) I've spent my 12 classes in the music school.

yet I wonder can I hack my brain slightly more -- I wanna taste a rainbow :) literally.

  • you can induce this with psychedelics.

  • @yoyoboy70 took the words out of my mouth

  • He wears his hair like me.

  • I thank God i don't have synesthesis. But I have good taste in music. This was silly.

  • his voice tastes disgusting... it makes me wanna puke hahaha

  • Questacon!

  • I bet music theory was a lot easier for her than for me.

    =(

  • I only have letters/numbers to colors synesthesia (and maybe something else; it becomes waaay too much of a sub-conscience process after a while to tell)...it's interesting to heard variations of synesthesia that are related to taste!

  • GREAT !!!!

  • when i see all the youtubeaccounts of people with synesthesia in here, they all have in common a great passion and interest for music. that's amazing, i wish i could experience music like you do folks

  • from a person who is both blessed and cursed with this experience.....it makes life a truly ecstatic feast of the senses.

  • i can kinda smell colours. I think it's pretty beastin awesome :D

  • Hhah theres nothing worth than being around some with personality colour (personification synaes) that sets off your smell/taste synaes to something awful.

PPl with bright nursery red personalities make me taste burning plastic T_T.

  • I have sound to movement, smell/taste to colour , colours to days of the week , and colour to personality synaesthesia. Also the persons personality colour (personality to colour synaes ) sets off my smell/ taste to colour. So they kinda intertwine. Haha its confusing to say. I literately never hear silence ever!

  • I have colour to taste /smell , personality to colour , movement to sound and days of the week to colour. I literately have never heard silence.

  • I have always tasted music. I didn't know it was strange until I started asking people about it. And until just know I had no idea it had a name.

  • awesome video professor! I have a case of synesthesia where i can look at people and they look like words, numbers and letters! Anyone else have this kind? I was told it was a type of synesthesia lol me and my friends brother have it!

  • i could be mistaken, but you might have gotten the perfect and aug 4th switched. great video though! favorited.

  • haha ive always kind of wished i could experience synesthesia too!

that was a neaat idea, and i WILL try it SOMETIME

  • The music at the start tastes like nerds.

  • Professor Funk = My personal Hero.

Used this video in my uni presentation about synesthesia. Everyone loved it!

  • @modeperv Oh that's awesome!

    What mark did we get?

  • i can taste sounds but mostly they taste the same, strange to say this but it taste like a girls pussy.. :D or when you put a battery against your tongue.. It kinda taste like that for me.. but i mainly have color synesthesia, associating numbers with a certain unique color

  • I wish I had synesthesia! :(

  • @livenlarge13 It's a mixed "blessing". Synesthetes aren't better or worse, just different.

  • exellent video 5 stars!

  • And then absolutely no one posts in response... I wish I could taste colours.

  • the letter 'A' is RED and 'B' is BLACK..

    im gifted! hoora!!

  • I have it too... Mine makes me able to see music in color and I can taste things, in relations to other things.

  • I have it too... Mine makes me able to see music in color and I can taste things, in relations to other things.

  • earwax at @3:14 .. u really taste it?

  • earwax at 3:14 .. u really taste it?

  • @rockinxull YUP!

  • earwax at 3:14 .. u really taste it? O.O

  • Synesthesia is real. I have it. I can taste words. For example. The name Samantha tastes like freshly cut apples, the Name Danny Tastes like Glazed Honey bunns, however Daniel tastes like a cheese danish. This is very real.

  • @danlublock That's cool. But what if you tasted music but you didn't like the taste but the music you like.

  • are u Norwegian ? since u drink voss water.

  • @gus2673 Haha Good spotting!

Not Norwegian but I DO think the bottles are awesome.

  • I am a synesthesia. It applies to colors, numbers, letters, dimensions, definitley music. I have many coorelated theories. It works both for and against me. I had no idea about this and never told until I read about it in class one day. I was amazed that there are others like me. I have learned to adapt my talents in a positive manner (most of the time) Love the video- needed some humour on the subject.

  • i Really find this hard to believe! i sincerely doubt synesthesia is true, considering that anyone could pretend to taste music or hear colours!

  • it's definitely real. i have musical synesthesia. it's hard to explain what it's really like. at times, depending on the music i'm hearing, it can be the most amazing thing. but when i'm listening to anything too loud or jumpy, it's like shoving a milkshake made of all the parts of the food pyramid in my mouth.

  • I also have musical synesthesia. I recently discovered I can also taste voices. It sucks being in a crowded hallway, because tasting everyone's voices all at once is not very fun. It's like eating cheese, yogurt, and broccoli at the same time (but not always those foods).

  • yeah, it is like telling a blind person to see something, sometimes i "see" lights when i hear some noises or music and its very difficult to explain it, because i find almost everyone around me is "blind"

  • @jozaow456

Check it out at Wiki. There are tests. It's real. Yes, anybody could SAY "numbers are different colors to me," but they couldn't prove it the way synesthetes can.

  • Reality is illusion

  • I have two types of syneasthesia, Time-space and seeing sound ^^ Thanks for doint the video-very very very cool ^^

  • Man, must be interesting living like this.

  • I have Cytowic Synesthesia (sound-->sight) and I have always had "taste" (hahaha) for techno music, specifically light or trance. It's a very pretty dislay of colors. I also see colored numbers (not letters) and every letter and color has a personality, along with a personification to go along with it. I didn't realize it was all so weird until I realized few others saw it my way. I was always the weird one. Thanks for the video, it was very funny and enjoyable.

  • I have months -> spacial location and personalities. Musical synesthesia sounds like a dream though! No pun intended...

  • Madness =D.

    So cool.

  • i also have synesthesia, i see music. if anybody else out there does I high reccomend Frank Zappa (who also had synesthesia) his music is amazing to watch

  • What does 'moonlight sonata' look like to you? (If it's possible to describe it)

  • Yeahhhh Zappa and Phish.....

Oh and hendrix's "electric lady land" and "axis: bold as love" I get a lotta purple from hendrix,

a lotta purple, dark green, light blue from phish

zappa is like an explosion, like fireworks or spilled paint

  • I have had musical synesthesia for sight since I was a little boy, and whenever I hear Frank Zappa, I still get a headache and see confusing patterns. However, I must admit that listening to soothing and slow trance has an enjoyable sense put into it. It looks beautiful.

  • The augmented fourth was actually the perfect fourth... wtf...

  • I have synesthesia. I see sound.

  • I have this

  • Daniel, you always make me laugh so hard, and I love your science!!!!

  • I had no idea music could make some people see colours ot taste tastes... It can be a blessing and a curse! Thanks for educating me ;)

  • Freaky awesome. You're amazing! lots of laughs here.

  • Fair enough impression, I have synesthesia, but more with colours and sounds. Some of the months even have personalities!

  • Numbers have always had personalities for me, but I never thought it was out of the ordinary ^.^

  • Synesthesia, it's wonderful in some ways. Musical synesthesia is awesome. Timbre -> Color

Oh my god. This is amazing.

  • AGH! my friend has this condition where she tastes music! I almost referred her to a psychologist or someone! she isn't crazy! weird! my eyes are opened!

  • Hahaha - no don't take them to a shrink - just find out what sounds make them taste raw fish and play that around them all the time!

  • I mostly have synesthesia with music to color, sometimes it gets really visual and I go into a dream/trance state, it also helps with writing songs and riffs. I love having synesthesia even though other people think its wierd! :D

  • Yeah lots of people say similar... that it helps them write different songs. Lots of very cool experimental artists out there suffer from synesthesia.

  • @TheProfessorFunk Suffer? I would say blessed with synesthesia.

  • @TheProfessorFunk Excuse me Professor, and I don't mean to sound rude, but most synesthetes don't consider it suffering. In fact, many of us consider it a gift. It helps me remember things. I have absolutely no problem remembering phone numbers after hearing them once because I just focus in on the color's order. I use my musical synesthesia to recreate music I've heard. When most people recreate music they call it "playing by ear" while I can "play by color." :) I love your videos! Keep it up!

  • Oh man...that is awesome. THat must have been gross though..haha.

I wish I had synestesia but not that kind...that must sucks. I love star wars but having to taste something like that after hearing it's music would make me hate it!

  • 1:33

  • They should've done bat country by avenged sevenfold. lol!

  • Lol, so, how did the earwax and grass taste? XD

Man I wish I had that, just not those ingredients (Id never listen to music if I had to eat taste earwax everytime.)

Usually with different smells I get an image, but I think alot of people do that XD

  • i think grass tastes like lettuce.

  • this is awesome

  • i have the same thing as jimthelizardking, and i had no idea that other people didn't imagine different numbers and letters as colors...i don't actually see the colors or taste them or anything, but i just associate them with whatever color. i also imagine the calendar as a circle/pie chart thing with winter at the bottom, spring to the right, summer at top, etc. i never thought this has anything to do with synesthesia...does it?

  • Man that's really cool about visualising the calendar. That is actually a type of synesthesia. People see numbers in front of them in particular arrangements. Dates in the past can be behind them and dates in the future ahead. Quite cool.

  • i have this with months years numbers the day the week and many years. i also see colors in letters words and numbers.

  • 2:22 ahh, its GLaDOS from portal :O

  • thats so frekin cool.

when im at concerts and the sound is so loud you can feel your insides shaking i could faintly taste popcorn but then i sorta realise thats cause most people at concerts have popcorn... but im only SMELLING the popcorn yet i can taste it... im pretty sure everyone has that tho.

    too bad i hate popcorn.

  • aahahahaha

Simpsons quote: "I'd say he eats more like a duck!"

funy vid dude! luv ya work! :-p

  • I always thought everyone saw letters in colors...I know now that they don't...I also see pain as colors.

    I wish I had music--->color syn!!!

  • I see music as colors, i see colors when i touch, and I see smells as colors.

    But I can't taste colors.

  • the reason it doesnt taste good is because of aftertaste which is normal, with synesthesia, the taste immediately changes with no after taste

  • Hey good point. I guess I never thought about aftertaste.

  • I can see the colors of music, can't taste it though. The thing is I share musical synethesia with my older brother.

  • Yeah there's a feeling that synesthesia is genetically linked so that makes sense. It's good to know someone who shares it. Are your colours pretty much exactly the same? Or is there variation?

  • There is variation, although my brother and I have both agreed that we see the color yellow or gold for drums.

  • i'm pretty sure i have a minor form of this

ever since i could remember, i imagined letters as different specific colors. up until awhile ago i thought everybody did that

  • how can i test it, that i have synthesia??

  • There is no real test its just how the world looks and feels to you. Google synesthesia and check out the different forms. Some people see shapes in music, others see colours in letters.

  • Synesthesia

Now I know what the "S" stands for in LSD

Christmas music tastes like candy canes

  • Awesome.

  • I wonder if synesthesia also includes feeling movement. When I listen to songs, i feel like I'm floating, swirling down a descending scale, while also seeing synchronized shapes and certain hues. I feel it especially in writing. I can feel chains of words, see in my minds eye what hues they have. It's weird because I seriously get close to feeling high when I write stories.

  • That's amazing. I think movement is a form of synesthesia - I know some stimulus can make people 'feel' things. Some music can be sharp and painful, others soft and light - as if they're being touched by the notes! Keep writing man!

  • yeah , somnetimes music has colors and another some kind of shades

  • ahh! that was weird! when they played the piano i could taste it... tehehe i love this

  • I have synesthesia. I don't have tastes for music, but I do have colours for taste, and music, and pretty much anything else! I usually think of synesthesia as a gift (it is quite helpful with spelling), but it is quite annoying when I have to hide from a colour or people don't understand what I am talking about.

  • Most people with synesthesia wouldn't want to lose it - it really is a gift. One I wish I had :(

  • I'm always amazed that people are so interested in my synesthesia. I don't understand how anyone could like music without color, it's like a blind person enjoying fine art.

  • More amazed AND jealous. I feel boring just experiencing music the way I do - no colour, no taste, no shapes. Sigh*

  • I had a blind guitar teacher years ago, and I was always surprised how much he loved to watch movies without any description of what was happening. If the world has always been presented in one way I guess.

  • I'm not sure if it's considered synesthesia, but the numbers 7 and 4 appear red to me and I confuse them both with the letter F, and vice versa.

It's kinda annoying telling someone to meet me at "F o'clock" tho...

  • Yeah that's a mild form of graphime - colour synesthesia, not a bad one either!

  • This is absolutely amazing!

I have always been amazed by the things this

    disease can do!

Thanks for making this video! :D

  • Thanks for the great comment. There are a lot more videos of peoples experiences about this stuff. There is a favourite in my profile page on tasting faces. Fascinating.

  • Ya i saw that one!

Haha, i remember Camron Diaz was

    Salmon.

  • For me, the Jazz is the most tasty and colorful music. The tumpets are lemon and orange.

  • That's really amazing! You get a similar sense pairing as a synesthete too?

Thanks for adding that comment it's nice to hear other people's experiences.

  • Well,I don´t know yet how many forms of synaesthesia I have,I only know that I perceive mixed sensations everytime since I was a child. For example, when I hear a sound I perceive shapes-tastes-colours and sometimes "personalities" and tactile sensations. Is difficult to explain. All the senses are chained: since I was a child the alphabet and numbers are colorful and every letter and number has his own personality and sound.I work as a portraitist and I can "taste" people´s faces too.

  • you can "taste people's faces"!!?? that's so cool! I kinda have the same feeling as a non-synaesthesiast when I watch Nat on 'communitychannel' lol seriously tasty! :-p

aaahh, c'mon, that was kinda funny! I'm sure you've seen her work too! :-)

    hmm...ok, I'll go now! ;-)

  • Please, check the video on my channel called Tasting Faces. Is a try to explain with images what I feel when a see a certain face. Thanks a lot :)

  • I get the same thing with certain genres of music. I don't really like country, but country music has always been just really... tasty to me I guess. haha. It's really cool. So far the most "vividly" tasting song for me is drifting by andy mckee... that song tastes like a cherry jolly rancher. haha

  • So do you get similar taste pairings to this girl or are they slightly different? Each persons synesthesia is unique but often they share similar themes.

  • not really, I dont' get certain flavors for each interval between notes or anything, it's more of like the main idea of the song, making the entire song itself taste like one specific thing. Unless the song drastically changes, which happens sometimes ;)

  • @AlexStevens42

oh YOU are my favorite person!

  • What does the brown note taste like?

  • Oops someone already said that.

  • Thanks for being more observant than me anyway! Cheers

  • You've mixed up the augmented and perfect fourth... :D

  • sick!, i dont know you dont more viewers or subscribers, i subscribed btw!

  • That Swiss woman must be a fair size...

  • HAHA. Great Comment!

  • that was so much fun! awesome stuff! just one thing, where you've labelled the interval as "augmented 4th", it's actually "perfect 4th", and where you've labelled "perfect 4th", it's actually "augmented 4th" =)

  • Oh Snap that's embarrasing. As you can probably tell I have little to no musical knowledge or talent.

Thanks for advising me on that Ling!

  • Dude that was so awsome. Grossly awesome.

  • That is gold Dan, gold. Dan.

  • Lol, that was good.
