  • This band was so bloody brilliant. I lost count of the number of times I saw them. I was lucky enough to meet Chappo in 2005 :-)

  • Saw Family 4 times in Cardiff in their heyday and Roger again a few years ago and still love 'em. He must've wrecked 100's of tambourines and threw 'em into the crowd but never managed to grab one, but I DID shake hands with him in Cardiff Coal Exchange a few years ago :-))

  • Also saw this band 2 times at portsmouth guildhall 70/71 and incredible to see roger again with that brilliant voice

  • Grandiose ! En 70, ils faisaient l'égal du Floyd et du Soft !

  • Holy moley, this roccckkkksss! Afuckingmazing!

  • nice to know the over 60s still know and remember pure talent and quality rock on the oldies !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • i may be an old geezer but where today is there anything that can touch this quality of music?

  • Merci.

  • anyone got any footage of the Stones Hyde park free concert when Family blew them off the stage??

  • Back in the day bought "Anyway" on a whim , knowing little of the band. The first track was a live version of GBBB and I don't think I was ever so hit in the face by any track before or since. Still the best live track I've ever heard. TBH I don't much like anything else they did....but this song is rock perfection. RC is astonishing. Thanks for the up chappo.

  • thoughs memories never fade, top band of all time.

  • Curiosity jejeje, similar voice to group Spain on 60's.

Los Canarios -"Get on your knees".

My favorite song to Family :Good News Bad News.Fantastic

  • Great song, great Roger ,fantastic video, thanks

  • Chappo!! Voice of an Electric Goat, moves of an Electrocuted Chicken. Without a doubt, 'In His Own Time'....

  • @ytnsanw LOL. The rich man's Joe Cocker.

  • I've see them 2 times in 1970. (Theâtre 140 + Beaux Arts in Brussels). This is exactly how it feeled. Roger was crazy and so were we... Gosh... My youth ;-)

  • This is my music - the thing I heard and understood for the first time as a 12 year old Danich kid -

I could borrow it - and i did the whole time :O) it had a profound effekt on me and still has...

    Family is it.

  • One of the best Bands of the seventies. Regret never seeing them.

  • One of my favorite song from "young times"

This was music without computer; only Instruments and voices .

    Very good.

  • They were fantastic live. Chappo is unique, but as a band they were so powerful and almost violent in how they played. Fabulous.

  • Love the vibraphone cranked up to 11 in this, and the fantastic energy all through this performance.

  • Saw them 2 times in Brussels in 1970/71 : amazing. Roger Chapman was one of the best singers and showman. Unbelievable voice...

  • Although Family recordings were released in the US, first on Warner Bros and later on UA, they never seemed to translate to the US music scene of the late 1960's and early 1970's. Too bad! This band was absolutely amazing! Klooks Kleek, Isls of Wight, Roundhouse - a killer live act everywhere they played!

When I returned to the US from the UK in 1970, my American friends would ask me to name my favorite British band that they didn't know.....Family was always my answer!

    Family....amazing!

  • The more I see and hear him several times and more I like ... great band, great R.Chapman!

  • So glad I saw Family live -- they were fucking brilliant

  • different ageless this album is awesome!!

  • incredible true energy!

  • What a brilliant band. Only saw them once - Liverpool 1974-ish. They broke the mould, so innovative. Pity they were largely known for their "poppy" singles, as they had fantastic depth. And this was a great track!

  • The only band i know which's live records are better than the studio ones.

Thanks for the video, it's a rarity!

  • there were plenty of them:D Allman Bros :) Cream

  • What a sheer power, Chapo and the boys at their best!

  • Family was so rockin. We always called Chapman The Goatman cause of his bellow but it was so raw... so from the gut just wonderful stuff.

  • Fantastic performance! I love it!!!

  • I Feel the same way - I am from 59 and this band was my first musical facination-

I so dig their albums and I am from Denmark.

  • @ chungafrescor: you can find a KILLING over 8 minutes version of this song on the album "Anyway". Look at amazon.

    Hope I could help you.

  • Thanks, Gigajogi. I listened this song when I where 17 years (now I´m 49). Is John Wetton at the bass? Incredible musician. Sorry. My english is poor. I´m uruguayan, and my langage is spanish.

  • Hi, yes me too, I am now 51 years old and this song was in my head since I was a teenager, never found another one who is similar with it's energy and it is highly impressive. I bought the 'Anyway' album maybe 10 years ago and was so glad to have found this song on a cd.

  • I ´ve been looking for this song from years. Thanks for posting it!

  • That's great. I've always thought that Family were one of the greatest ever live bands. For example, I used to enjoy making 'Anyway' T-shirts to pass on to my mates. Not quite as great as the Beatles, but pretty damned close e.g. Isle of Wight 1971.

  • alsome wow fantastic, blew me away

  • Hehe I love this band!!I agree quality isn't the best but it's entertaining... the energy is Awesome, particularly @ the point were Chapman goes crazy with his tambourine!:)

  • OK...The sound quality is'nt great...But the Energy...Chappo could start an avalanche with that voice...LOL...Nice 1 Bud...

  • Saw the band '69 in Turku, Finland.

    The best band ever.

  • cool, very cool I use to play this in my buddys apartment like really loud - he'd get so pissed of at me

  • I wish that somebody had a song on here by Family called "Young Girl." It was used in the movie from 1970 called The Adventurers. They used it in a seen where models were doing the catwalk. They should have put this song out on one of their albums.

  • Oh my! ..Thought I would never see any footage of them ever again...thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you..and a million times, thank you! (I'm gonna search the rest of your postings now)

  • one of the great rock band and one of the most great singers ever heard

  • Great to see this again..oh how I wish it was 1970 and I I hair again ! Great music from a superb band.I live in Thailand now and the only thing I miss about the yUKie is good live music..but the Thais are trying and some decent bands are emerging.Cheers !

  • Awesome performance. I saw em at Isle of Wight and was blown away and became a lifelong fan. The kids in England told me, and perhaps it was an urban legend, that Chapman's doctors had warned him that his constant head shaking in performance was going to paralize him. Rebel to the end he never stopped. God bless ya, chappo!

  • great playing, especially whitney and weider.

this lineup may have been stronger musically than the grech/king lineup which was amazing, don't get me wrong, but this lineup may have had more muscle and they had grown as musicians from all that live playing, too---

  • Hello all !!!

I wanted to know wich live Family played this song??? I'm so so wondering wich one! and if it was possible to find that song in good quality on a dvd or a cd, I become so crazy when I'm listening it !! ....it's sounds like pre-hardrock's song hehe! thanks a lot and thanks to post that kind of video on youtube

  • saw them in 1969 in pop festival of plumpton,

    live they were a great band,ORIGINAL,that s i remenber of them ,they were diferent,rock,folk,oriental,themself with the strange voice of the singer;

and because they were too different they did nt have the success;WHY

  • OMG, You Tube is a real treasure, I've only heard for this performance long time ago, and now I can enjoy this. Thanks for posting, The Family were one of the best!

  • If it wasn't for that disaster of an American tour in 1969, who knows how big Family would have been in this country. I still don't know why they never broke big here.

  • Great stuff. I was at the farewell concert at the de montford hall and at the first (?) Chapman-Whitney Streetwalkers free gig in Hyde Park. Still a big fan of Family after all these years.

  • they live for their music, every note - great sound, great attitude, great voice ......

  • We will never forget the best band ever - unknown -

  • Saw them at a Lyceum all-nighter around 1971 -unbelievable! What a band, a strange band indeed but nonetheless superbly brilliant. Thanks for these clips. Cheers to Chappo, Johns W,Polli Palmer and Rob. We won't forget you.

  • I think I was there too

  • No one ever sang like this guy.Good to hear his voice again.Thank you.

  • Unbelievable. I never thought I'd see Chappo at his best again. Saw Family at Sheffield City Hall in early 70's a few times. Best live band ever. Saw Chappo at Boardwalk in Sheffield a couple of years ago and the voice was just as good but he insisted on doing new stuff. No "GoodNews Bad News" no " Strange Band" What a shame. Still love him though

  • Roger Chapman performed here in his home town of Leicester, solo, just last year. Still the same memeric voice.

  • wow just wanted to mention i saw them live at fairfield in the early 70,s and having watched again now has the hairs on my neck standing up again..A truly great rock band never forgotten

  • I was there at Fairfield too. It was the live recording for the Anyway album, during which I heard this very song for the very first time. What a night! What a band!

  • nah its John Weider..Whetton replaced him :)

  • Excellent!!

  • Great footage, truely inventive and progressive sound, really pulses and jams your senses, rock on FAMILY ! Has anyone seen the old Top Of The Pops performances of Family ? I had seen one a while ago of Weavers Answer, have been looking for this vid for a while. Anyone seen or heard of it by chance ?

  • Ok-who's the bassist on this? John Weider?

  • Im not certain but I think it may have been John Whetton.

  • Great band, great track. Lucky enough to see them at the Top Rank Liverpool while I was at Uni (early 70s). Thanks for finding this Chappomusic, and bringing back some great memories.

  • Prsumably Rick Grech on bass

  • at last - family videos - thank you - one of the most original and sadly forgotten bands

  • What a great live clip! I saw Family on the Anyway tour back in 1970 at Sheffield City Hall and I still maintain that it was one of the best gigs I ever attended. We didn't see enough of Family on TV although I dimly remember watching a 25 minute in concert programme on late night TV; I think it was a recording of either a Scandinavian or a German rock show, any one got a copy?

  • Double-necked Gibson growls are music too! :-)

  • My God, that brings it all back - but, what's this? Tambourine in one piece and no beer slung over the audience? Brilliant.

  • Great video, great song, great singer and great band. On their strongest songs family were great, and this video shows them to be amazing live. Such dark intensity - really powerful.

  • Agreed, my favourite band ever. It's criminal that there's so little footage of them.

  • hey chappo! what with the tambourine? still in one piece at the end of the song! no, seriously, one of the most original, idiosyncratic bands to ever grace this earth. one-of-a-kind and never to be equalled!

  • You can see the man live at his 65's live in Z7, Pratteln, Switzerland on the first of may. Better not miss it.

  • definitely won`t miss it, thanks, and funny you should mention the concert! why? 1) only yesterday, a friend told me about the gig and 2) z7 is actually very nearby.

in all these years, I never saw the man! I`ll be there.

  • wow, brave new world. Amazing to see the best band ever unknown on youtube

  • This is an awesome song, ty for posting. I bought the Isle of Wight movie just for this song, and I think 10 seconds were played and no footage of the band. Does their complete Isle of Wight performance exist anywhere? Ty again.

  • You must have seen the expanded DVD of Message To Love which contains a full version of The Weaver's Answer. I bought it only on the strength of that and it doesn't disappoint.

  • this song just shatters my mind, one of the greatest groups ever!

  • love family, this was real "prog",at it's best!hope to see more stuff from them on'ere!

  • Long live Roger Chapman. The best band ever and the best singer ever !

  • Ahhhhhhhhh....music the way it should be !

  • Thanks for the upload. Great stuff.
