We sang this in our 4th grade assembly... in 1972, was alot of fun hearing somewhere between 80 and 100 kids singing this at once, then we did in sections and overlapped with each other. Great memories. Great song
I meet Earl Robinson in 1974 when he came to our play of the Lonesone train at Mesabi Community College. We party after, he sang Joe Hill, B&W and many others.
@thespeez - I hear you. I was in kindergarten when this song came out. Doesn't matter though, because material like this will always stand the test of time. :)
MLK's words still resound with a hope that ALL MEN (and women) will be judged by the content of their character and not the color of their skin. Unfortunately, many groups constantly bring up skin color to cover up character flaws. MLK is probably spinning in his grave to see how poverty pimps have held blacks down to assert a pseudo leadership role.
Great song reminds me of a sisters graduation when in 73' her senior class sang it.. Note: while the small minded and ignorant play up race - and it is also used by the media as a tool to divide and keep people stirred up - there IS an underlying fundamental problem which is not about race but rather cultural values and mindset. Any 'culture' that celebrates and idolizes destructive behavior is not welcomed by civil considerate respectful people. Love the dog - hate the behavior!
I have always liked this song, but now that I know the reason behind the writing, I like it even more. Didn't think that was possible. Thanks for posting this.
Y'know, technically in the picture of the black and white kids, the white kid is an albino African American kid... although the point still stands. Nice song.
one day maybe we can just judge each other on how nice we are to one another. i was raised thinking everyone deserved respect but it could be lost. this song was a big step towards equality but honestly as long as people are still noticing differences the problem will go on
Thank you for posting such a beautiful song and to add the history of it! Your presentation video is also beautiful and fits perfectly to the song! Love it and wished the world could also see the "light!"
"Black and White" is a song written in 1954 by David I. Arkin and Earl Robinson. The most successful recording of the song was the pop version by Three Dog Night in 1972, when it reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
what is wrong with you people? a heart is a heart and a life is a life. what the hell difference does it mean? I was robbed also and the guy was black do you think he cared what color i was? i DON'T THINK SO my money was still green!!!!! this song is to cool ,to here people sound like it's the 40's god damn this is america! show proof that one of you are full blood what . we are all hienz 57
@AmericanAirlinesRule as long as the media pumps out separation we will be stuck. The folks who cry racism all the time, are the biggest racists .....they see color not the person
I was announcing "on the air" on a small radio station in Muncie, Indiana when this first came out. In fact, it was my choice to be a hit!! (Pick to Click). What a great sound during a great period of time. Now to look back and listen to this is great. Thanks,
It will be a great day on Earth when all racial predjudices are gone... if that day will ever come, I don't know. It seems silly that grown adults would judge another person, simply because of the amount of pigment their skin happens to have, but this happens all the time.
While it is anti-racist which is all well and good, the tune itself is rubbish compared to 'one' or 'mama told me not to come.' Sounds completely retarded.
@TheCommunistsareBack You're entitled your opinion, but this is actually a pretty great pop song...it just happens to be a different style than the songs you're talking about, which are also sweet :)
i got to watch my dad get mugged by 3 people in an elevator a few years ago...
Guess what ethnicity they were....you guessed it.....black.
I want NOTHIN to do with their kind....if you all think thats racist, too bad. As sad as it is, they have a right to live here....and i have a right to keep away from em.
@JimmyHopkins2 why don't you go back to your wife( your sister) and live your simple ass life.People of all races commit crime ,so I am a black and I got rob by a white guy in new york.. who is in the mafia, not blacks you are a small little man... and you are racist. So you think all black people are bad..well never been to jail I have one child ( which live with me) and I have a great job... so what now Hitler
@JimmyHopkins2 I had too take care of a 10 year old rape victim, a little girl...head beaten in with a brick. Guess what was the sex of the perp? I guess I should have nuthin' to do with them...Refuse to treat them..kick out my husband and sons too?
If you mean the 60's music generation, they have been replaced by fashions and attrition, and no longer have the influence the once did, even though many proponents are just as militant now.
If you talk about current politicians, who became aware in the 60's,then you are right.
They have "inherited" the world, and are unwittingly following in the foot steps of Adolf Hitler.
The "dream" as you put it is just that, but hope should never lead to despair.
Is it just me, or are their children singing in the background starting @ 1:55. A stroke of genius which always gets to me when I hear this most beautiful and touching song
I had not heard this since I was "on the air" in 1972. What a treat! If memory serves me correctly, this song was authored in response to a US Supreme Court decision in 1971.
I was hearing this on the radio before & when I hear it, it makes me want to cry. We still live in a world full of hate whether judging from skin, race & religions. We keep our doors closed so much where we hate before we get to know one another. As much as this won't likely happen I do hope one day, at least before human race dies out, we would know in the end we need each other more than anything since in a dark shallow world this is we can never live in it alone. Then we can see a light.:')
@74TheJoker I used to listen to this song as a child too. Some where around 79-80 or so. I was something like 10ish or so. I can't recall but I know this song was something that stuck with all these years later and tonight here I am listening to it. I've not heard it in decades... It's still good stuff. Perhaps some day mankind will figure it out and we'll come treat each other like the extended family we actually are. DNA has already proven ALL of us ARE related. :)
@dettigs Yah, it is. It's one of those songs that I might listen to once every 5 years at this point, but when I do, it still has the same impact on me that it did when I first heard it as a young child. Good stuff survives the test of time.
The world is green & the world is blue too. It's nice o know that those days are of the past. We all seem to be getting along now here in the western world anyway. I know there ia still disagreements, hostility and fueds between the people, the government and the western world, and it's primarily in the middle east. It's out of ancient religious beliefs more than anything else and the fact that the civilized world marches ahead. Thx4 this posting.
We still have the KKK and the Black Panthers--one of its leaders, just a few weeks ago, said he hated all white people, every last one of them. He called them crackers and that he wanted to kill every last cracker including their children. This leader from the Black Panthers was arrested and about to be sentenced having gone through the court system, only to have his case be dropped. It had a lot to do with voter intimidation during last year's "election."
unfortunate there's only six thousand views,,, that's such a cool picture, the one with the kid with the baby on his shoulders,,, where u get that picture??
If there was ever an early '70s pop classic, it would be this one.
From it's catchy tune, fun rythms, great arrangment, sweet vocals no message more important is conveyed in such a strong yet celibratory way. Thanks very much for the upload.
As a kid, it's one of the songs that cemented my outlook on life. After all these years, I never knew that Sammy Davis Jr. was the first to record it. Nor did I know the original lyrics. Is there a recording of the original lyrics?
This song has as much meaning as it did some 40 years ago.I bought the 45 to this classic when it came out.have loved it ever since. Thanks for this one.
The Original Lyrics Included this Brown vs Board of Education reference: Their robes were black, Their heads were white, The schoolhouse doors were closed so tight, Nine judges all set down their names, To end the years and years of shame.
The song makes more sense with it, but the UK audience didn't know what all of it meant.
The ink is black, the page is white Together we learn to read and write A child is black, a child is white The whole world looks upon the sight, a beautiful sight And now a child can understand That this is the law of all the land, all the land The world is black, the world is white It turns by day and then by night A child is black, a child is white Together they grow to see the light, to see the light And now at last we plainly see We'll have a dance of Liberty, Liberty!
The second line! For the last 35+++ years I could have sworn it was 'together we learn to re-write'; ah well...that's what I get for having a lousy AM radio.
A child is black, a child is white The whole world looks upon the sight, a beautiful sight The world is black, the world is white It turns by day and then by night A child is black, a child is white Together they grow to see the light, to see the light C'mon, get it, get it Ohh-ohhhh, yeah, yeah Keep it up now, around the world Little boys and little girls Yeah, yeah-eah, oh-ohhh
I remember this song so well from '72, but I had no idea about the history behind it! I bet there will be many others who will read this and be enlightened. Great job, Ron!
why cant we just go together and have peace? it should be spread! Peace like Martin Jr said: Peace all around!

The second line! For the last 35+++ years I could have sworn it was 'together we learn to re-write'; ah well...that's what I get for having a lousy AM radio.

The world is black, the world is white
It turns by day and then by night
A child is black, a child is white
The whole world looks upon the sight, a beautiful sight
The world is black, the world is white
It turns by day and then by night
A child is black, a child is white
Together they grow to see the light, to see the light
The world is black, the world is white
It turns by day and then by night

O.K....let's try this again...
"The ink is Black the page is White TOGETHER we Learn to read and write" ...
"TOGETHER We grow to SEE the Light!!!"
"Peace + Love = Happiness!!!"
"Love is the Answer!!!" oxo...
Pretty simple!...Class dismissed!!!

Nice job on this one, Ron. Timeless message. I loved the song in '72 and had no idea it pre-dated Three Dog Night by so many years!!
