Wouldn't a mountain bike with knobbed tires and fork shocks be more suitable for the terrain than a 10-speed? Or... is that the idea/appeal of the sport?.. doing something with the wrong equipment.

Try running with a 9 - 10 Kilo MTB on your shoulder while jumping over obstacles in mud...

and the tyres are special terrain tyres.

As I understand it, you can ride with any bike you like in these events. Nobody is going stop you from entering with a MTB with shock forks and all the bells and wistles.

People still use this (CX) kind of bike, so I guess it fits this kind of biking(and running) better.

Anyway. Trying to see a _point_ in any sport is futile. When you get right down to it people just do it for fun.

no, there are very strict rules in cyclocross, like your handelbars cant be more than 42cm wide or somethin and you cant have a mountain bike in most competitions.

In Switzerland, where my son rides, I believe that 15yrs & + have 2 use cyclocross bikes & not MTB. If u are good u jump over the obstacles on your bike anyway. Technically, a good rider can get around most types of terrain . It's a question of having a good line, balance & knowing when to use your brakes ... or not

It a tough sport. Alot of biking champions : F Cancellera, P Richard, L Dufour, come from a Ccross background & were often champions in the disipline be4 going on 2 win road races.

Yes.  These bikes are fast on smooth or close to smooth terrain, and it's faster to dismount and jump over large obstacles. Cyclocross courses will intentionally make you dismount. Riders use cyclocross as winter training a lot.
