For Eagle fans, skip to 1:45 for all the warm fuzzy memories of the Jets delivering our Birds a solid by knocking off Parsell's and giving us our 1st NFC division since 1980!!
In 1986, Sports Illustrated called the Jets the Big Apple's "second banana." I was young in the late '80s and I was like no way the Giants are supposed to lose to the Jets because the Giants won the Super Bowl just a few years before. At the end, the Giants missed the playoffs and the Jets finished the year with a winning record.
Many people say football has never been more fun to watch. I say it was just about as much fun back then to watch football.
Giants and Jets will kickoff in about 12 hours and with both teams seeking playoff spots, this upcoming game is widely considered to be the biggest in the history of this intraarea rivalry. But this game in '88 was also pretty big.
unfortunately, this win over the giants kept joe walton around for another disasterous season in 1989. a 4-12 mark, retirements due to career ending injuries to lonnie young, al toon and of course dennis byrd, and the hirings of the late dick steinberg, bruce coslet, kept the jets struggling along through the mid 90's!!!
"Pots and Pans" was designed for Pat Summerall but the play-by-play man had to engineer his own introduction for the game -- one set for the home team, one set for the visitors, and one set for the entire game.
That was a great day! The Jets knocked off Big Blue and out of the playoffs so the Eagles won their 1st division title in 7 years (the 1st I could remember). Even though the BIrds promptly legged an egg in the Fog Bowl in their next game before watching the Bears get trounced by the eventual champion 49ers.
The Jets were the designated home team I know the Giants wore Blue, but the Jets in this era wore white when they were the home team, also some may not have noticed but the endzones said Jets
@ultraback29 If the Giants and Jets play in the same stadium, how exactly is it a home game if they play each other? (I know the logos are painted differently and the "home" team probably has more fans due to season ticket holders but still.
Same thing with the Clippers and Lakers in the NBA.
Also, the circumstances in this game (i.e. blue jerseys, the venue, and CBS coverage of the NFC those days) usually meant it was a home occasion for the NY Giants.
@Knightmessenger The Jets were the designated home team I know the Giants wore Blue, but the Jets in this era wore white when they were the home team, also some may not have noticed but the endzones said Jets. They have to designate somebody the home team even though like Lakers-Clippers it is a home game for both.
@lmswentzeljr Correct. Also (response to ultraback's comment) the way the TV contracts work is that whichever network has AFC or NFC coverage would cover intra-conference games in which the team in the conference that network usually covers (today; CBS and FOX; then; NBC and CBS respectively) is the visitor.
@lmswentzeljr It's not a home game for both, unlike the Lakers and Clippers, both the Giants and Jets have fan bases big enough to fill up stadiums in their own right. When the Giants are "home," the stadium is full of Giants season ticket holders, and vice versa.
@lmswentzeljr Not true, because both teams have they're own large fan bases who have season tix. The JETS are the home team on X Mas Eve this yr, so they're season ticket holders get that game. Will there be Giants fans there? No doubt, but far more Jets fan will be there for that game. And its now called Met Life Stadium, co-owned by both teams.
@B2B76 my whole point is both teams play in that stadium, I realize that when one team is the home team their fans season ticket holders will get that game. With the new stadium its a 50/50 spilt now, in Giants Stadium it was more Giants.
@superman93994 interesting how you and other non-new yorkers don't seem to care about it yet you find it necessary to leave a negative comment. i guess you do care after all...
Dang I wish I could find this song to put in my mp4 player. Is there anyway I can find it? It is even better than the late 70's version of the nfl on cbs. Verne Lundquist huh. Good announcer.
This was a painful game as a Giants fan...if they had won, they would have been the #2 seed in the NFC playoffs -- and likely would have prevented the 49ers from reaching the SB that year. Instead, they lost and didn't make the playoffs b/c they lost the tiebreaker to the Eagles.
I remember this game all my friends were Giants fans and all I had was nothing too root for except eliminate the Giants from making the playoffs misery loves company lol
This intro is the reason why today football openings suck. The old intros provided a backstory to the two teams playing to give the fans an idea what to expect. The new CBS NFL intro is so generic that it looks like it was made with no imagination. TV in the 21st century!!!! It's fantastic.......
@chrisuncleahmad The Giants would have had an 11-5 record and would have had a first round bye and would have played at least one game in the meadowlands, IF the 49ers still lose to the Rams later that same day. If 49ers decide to NOT lay down, and beat the Rams then the Eagles go to Minnesota for the wild Card and the Giants get a bye and play at either Chicago or San Fran depending on the outcome of the Wild Card.
@chrisuncleahmad Neither. The Giants would have been home against the Vikings. The Bears had the best record in the NFC, but at the time, teams from the same division could not meet in the divisional round. Therefore, it would have been 49ers (10-6) at Bears (12-4) and Vikings (11-6) at Giants (11-5).
@DNSKansas You are correct. I was there, and this is still one of the most bitter defeats in Giants history. They would have had an NFC East title, a bye, and at least one home game. Worse, all the usual villains kicked in, the Jets beat us, the Eagles won the East, and the 49ers totally laid down later that afternoon because the Giants had beaten them in the `85 and `86 playoffs, had them beat earlier this `88 season but for the fluke pass to Rice and were to beat them again in `90 playoffs.
funny how back then nfl coverage on cbs, nbc, and abc used to show the teams helmets during the broadcast and now its just the logos inside the helmet on today's coverage
@mrwrestlingtape1 Are you a Jets fan? If so you have no reason to hate the Giants. Giant fans never talked trash to Jet fans until you haters started getting all arrogant with Rex. We're also the reason you're not playing in Los Angeles. Stop acting jealous of your neighbor, learn some courtesy and go hate who you're supposed to.
@njwhse I hate the Giants guts. It would be nice to see them play Week 17 again in the future with the same result the Jets knocking the Giants out of the playoffs.
It would be nice to see an all New York Super Bowl for once. The Giants vs the Jets. Imagine the hype for that game. Seriously doubt it will happen this year though.
I've noticed that in 1988 the NFC EAST played the AFC CENTRAL in inter conference play, while the NY Giants played only two AFC teams the Jets and the Chiefs, can someone hopefully answer this.
I can answer that for you, SFFOOL. Back in those days before Jacksonville and Carolina joined the NFL there were two divisions with only four teams. The Giants, Jets, and Chiefs all finished last in 1987. The last place team in a five team division would play the two teams that finished last in the other conferences' five-team divisions. The only divisions that did not do this were the AFC Central and NFC West, because they only had four teams.
Thanks, I never got the technicality of it until now. I remember inter conference games between would be every 3 years , then in 2002 it's every 4 years and home and home every time.
anything in the superbowl era is modern since before their used to be NFL championships and no playoffs. BTW, The Jets will win a superbowl soon, I dont know about 100 years lol because right now they got themselves a nice team and a bright future with Rex Ryans defense, solid offense with Sanchez leading the way.
I Remember This week! I also remember watching the closing seconds of this game!! You see My Eagles went into Dallas to Play Tom laundry's cowboys. Eales won 23-7. Then of course CBS switched to Ny game. Watching the JEts win I had to laugh........Giants out of Playoffs. The next day though was even better, because the new owner of the Dallas Cowgirls fired Tom Laundry.
As a Dallas Cowboys fan, I remember this game as well. I remember rooting for the Giants but they lost unfortunately. I also remeber my Cowboys stomping the Eagles duirng the mind 90's as Emmit had some of his best games against them. I also remember the fact that the eagels still have an empty trophy case....43 yrs and no superbowl...gotta love it!!!! LOL........Go Cowboys!!!

I'm just wondering, if the Eagles swept the Giants (from what I read, I think they did) that would give Philly the head-to-head tiebreaker. So how would the Giants have won the division if both teams finished 10-6 with that tiebreaker going to the Eagles?
If they both finished 10-6, Eagles would win on the tiebreaker. There's no way they can win the NFC East without going 11-5. They might have a shot at a wildcard with 10-6, but that year, the NFC was so strong that 10-6 didn't guarantee you the playoffs.
I sure miss the days when the NFC was the feared conference.
I realized that about 3 or 4 days ago. And you're right about the 10-6 thing that year because if it wasn't for the fact the 49ers were in front of their division, THEY may not have gotten in.
The AFC's been that way the last few years come to think of it.
The NFC West had three 10-6 teams that year; the Saints were the odd team out. The 49ers won the division because they swept the Saints, while the Rams went 1-1 against N.O. The Rams got the second wild card over the Giants because L.A. won 45-31 at Giants Stadium in week 4.
Now that I've got that figured out, another question. I saw on another video on the old oz615 intro for the Philadelphia-Dallas game that if the Giants and Eagles both win or Philadelphia lost, they could get in as a wild-card. Was it the same way for the Giants or a "division title or bust" scenario?
The Giants could have gotten in as a 10-6 wild card had the Rams lost that night to the 49ers. Instead, the Rams won at Candlestick 38-16, which gave LA the second wild card on a tiebreaker, as the Rams won 45-31 at Giants Stadium in week 4.
Eagles swept the Giants in '88. Game in Philly was on Monday Night, where Cunningham took the hit from Carl Banks, stayed on his feet, and threw the TD pass to Keith Byars. The game in N.Y. ended in OT; Clyde Simmons recovered a blocked field goal attempted by the Eagles and ran it in for a TD.
GREAT music. Even the graphics were awesome. If someone used those graphics today, nobody would say it looks too old. We need the music back. Even if just for one week.
I remember this game, I had to go to school the next day with all those Jets fan schoolmates taunting me at Saunders H.S

That's the point they did not. The Giants were 10-5 and Eagles 9-6.

If Gastineau didn't quit, the NFL was gonna get him for using banned substances.

@SFFOOL76 "Gastineau was goofy in the head."
No dispute from me on that.
