these along with orange amps nowadays are mass produced but good sounding..... just no durability
eaxample: PCB mounted tube sockets. if you need extensive maintanence like changing caps you might as well sell the amp and spend another grand. and they know this now you do
I love the rock tones you can get out of this amp, but I`d like some hevier metal tones as well... Any opinion about that? Would I get that sound by adding a Maxon OD808 overdrive pedal?
Bought the Express 5:50 'n right out of the box I noticed how both channels make quite an alarming hissing noise! Especially channel 2. Bought it from Sweetwater so they sent me a tube to try and narrow down the problem. Didn't work. Called Mesa Boogie and Marcus said normally channel one is the one that hisses. They actually said that! WTF? Yeah, I just threw down $1517 for a Bronco Tan P.O.S. So what I want to know is, does anyone out there own an express? If so does it hiss? Thanks.
@ToneKingGuitarMan Owned one myself and liked it but I found I preferred to play the clean channel with compressor and a tubescreamer up front. So I didn't need those other three channels. Mine didn't hiss but made a very annoying popping sound when I went to standby or hit the 5-50 power switch in the back. This pop seems to be a habit for several of the Mesa amps.
@TYX91101 Just a personal preference kinda thing but I don't like the sound of tubescreamers.... Stevie Ray only used 'em as a boost with the drive almost all the way down, then it sounds good. But after two mesa's crapped out sweet water gave me a 100% refund. Then I went another direction Swart amps and a heavily modded Fender blues jr.
@709AJ sweet water refunded me after the second one crapped out so no more Mesa's for me. Modded my Blues Jr with all new caps, resistors and a Mercury transformer and finished it off with a tone tubby 12" hemp speaker rated at 50w. . . by comparison it totally kills the Mesa Boogie.
@beleza175 Just get a noisegate or noise suppressor, it gets rid of that annoying hum. I've got a boss ns-2 and it works great, but im sure there's other cheaper options as well
Marshalls sound like Marshalls and Mesas sound like Mesas. Its all personal preference. for me Mesa is a much more versatile amp in tone and engineering. you arent buying an amp your buying an investment in a great company. and to be able to order anything custom is a big plus too. Mesas rock!
I have heard of diezel, they are supposed to be fantastic. Unfortunatley I have not been able to try one out. One day I hope. I would have to put a second mortgage on my house to purchase one though.
are the smaller amps such as this one and the F series any good for recording? if i get a mesa it'll have to be small, that's all i can afford and the only way i'll get it is if it can record good. i'l use my marshall for gigs
its smart if a tube amp is high wattage you will have to turn it up real loud to get the full tone but a amp like this you get the full tone at lesser volumes
The 5:50 head is 1400 u$s in RUDY´S New York. Is MESA BOOGIE an expensive amp?,the answer is yes,or maybe if you prefer;but I promise to everybody that this one worth every penny,,LOVELY SOUNDS from this little killer tone!!!
Have you ever seen inside of one? I mean inside the actual amp. They are super solid.Superb build quality is how they can afford to warranty the amps for 5 years.
does the 50w setting give you a lot more headroom than the 5w version on a clean setting, cause I plan on getting this amp and I don't want the clean channel to break up right away and I'm pretty sure I'm gonna be on the 5w setting most of the time
hey. i've been looking into mesaboogies. there are so many amps. how do i know which one is like the lower end one's . higher ends. what' special about them etc. the terms they use about diodes are wtf. to me
Mesa's are all handbuilt in california. They have a five year warranty and can absolutley give you any sound you want. IF your into the birtish sound like a marshall then look into thier stilletto. Its EL34 tone at its best. The roadking two delivers the american 6L6 and you can also mix the 6L6's w/El34's to get what I beleive is baddest tone for metal on the face of the earth. Go to their website and they will send you a free catalog. The stilletto is midrange. the road ismassive lowend.
This may be answered in one of the other postings, but what are the setting that you are using in each mode? If anyon could comment I would greatly appreciate it!
True, it does come from the fingers. A lot of it does. But a crummy amp is still a crummy amp. When you get into the more expensive amps it's more about the tonal quality you're looking for as opposed to the build quality, but factors like being hand wired and steel imputs as well as over all craftsmanship are a big deal when you get ready to buy an amp. No one wants to throw down a grand on an amp the is made out of plastic that will fall apart. I agree that the player makes it what it is.
This of course is very true but your fingers arent much use when your amp blows up mid set! Reliability is very important to me and for this Mesa and Rivera are the best Ive had. This comes down to solid workmanship, design and build quality, it cost though unfortunately!

I beg to differ. I love both Orange and Mesa amps (own both as well), they're very different creatures. In general, Mesa is much better build quality however the lead tones of the Rockerverb series put most Mesas (save for the Marks) to shame.
I have 5 MESA'S, two blackface Fenders and two vintage Orange(Matamp) amps not to mention a matchless and several Marshalls. To be honest a as professional musician Mesa/Boogie is far superior to the rest in every way posible, tone, reliability, headroom, versatility etc. The others are great because they remind us of the classic/familiar tones we grew up on,classic tones of the past but to be perfectly honest there is no comparison IMHO.
Its just my experience mate, no need to get snotty! Ive had a Vox AC30 go on fire, a Marhall JCM 2000 litterally blow up (Filter caps burst) and a Fender twin just stop working (rental, still dont know why). So unlike some bedroom guitarists reliability is very important to me. Mesa'a and Rivera's have never let me down in almost 20 years of gigging, Im not a Mesa rep, although I'd love to be;)
Wow, do people talk like that in person?? Bet theyanchamp would be a bit more polite face to face. Don't you get tired of the mouths that roar on youtube?
and if you live in argentina (like me) you must pay U$D 3900 for a USED dual rectifier trem-o-verb ... so stop complaining and enjoy these beasts... they are just a dream for me.
i have exactly same problem with my rivera fandango. I have to use an additional dstortion pedal to get those sounds nad i'm not contented yet. I think it must be a heavy distortion
I have a new 1 by 12 5:25, simply amazing, every sound imagineable, go for one, you wont be disapointed. I also have a Mk2b woodie, mk4 woodie, lonestar classic (best clean in the world IMHO!) and a stilletto trident head. The express sounds just as good as all of the above, dare I say a little better in some departments. The boxyness of the mk serie is history! Hope this helps, good luck!
dude I just played one of these in the little music shop by my work. H O L Y N U T S The thing sounded freeking amazing even before I EQ'd it. I just plugged in rolled off the tone just a touch of A G&L "tele thinline" and I could not put it down. Your demo is great I'm really enjoying it now. Great Demo!
My express 5/50 2x12 sounded great before it blew up!!!! with less than 5 hours on it.
I guess shit happens even with a hand made amp built in USA. I have a peavey classic 50 4x10 which has just as good distortion and never had a problem with it, or any of my Marshall's.
I have heard that some Mesa's had shipped with bogus tubes, not cool for an amp that cost this much..Guess i am going to need that 5 year warranty after all.
yieks love the sounds of this but just went over on ebay and one of these babies are selling for £1,200 a tad too expensive for me aghh. Sounds amazing though. Just bought an epiphone flying v sig guitar so want a better quality amp. Marshal 500's are pretty good arnt they?
Thank you for this. Most of the "demos" on youtube suck because people use effects or a shitty recording setup. Or it's filled with talking instead of playing! I'm considering either this amp or a Koch Studiotone. Is the Express 5:50's 5 watt mode quiet enough for practicing?
I have the Koch Studiotone, TritoneTerror. It is a truly excellent amp, although I am told that in the US it's far more expensive than here in Europe... (at least we get to see some cheaper guitar gear than you US guys!!!!!)
Both this Mesa and the Koch are amazingly versatile and phenomenally loud, although you sometimes get the luxury of being able to crank the Koch (it's 20W of Class A). Or you can go for its brand new bigger brother, the Studiotone XL (40W of Class A).
I just bought the 5:50 and for the simple reason I don't play metal, more hard rock, Iron Maiden type of softer metal.... It's a great amp. I jumped back and forth between this and the Stilleto and this was all I needed.
More gain, more gain, more gain! Jesus, this amp isnt a "more gain" kinda amp! Theres more to life than "more gain". Get a clue, If your a mindless metal head this amp isnt for you! If you value any kind of sublety in your music then you might consider this amp, otherwise go play a p.o.s. Krank or Randall.
played one today. my gig amp = roadster + 4 x 12. Have had Engl screamer + SE. Looking for home practice amp at mo + mesa have done it again. same standard formula...high price = high quality. with Roadster, only Deizel Herbert comes close(very) but at this size - 5:25 -I would take suggestions - chris
The gain on a Express isnt very high so this may be the highest the gain goes. The Express wont do metal without help. So if your looking for metal look at some of Mesas other amps such as Rectos, Marks, Road King, Stilletos, etc.
it's a matter of personal taste, not brand. it also depends on what music you play and what sound you're after. i personally like the mesa mark sereis, but not the dual/triple rectos etc.
Uhm i think mesa is more Metal than marshall. Don't get me wrong, i said "is more Metal" not only for metal, but that's my opinion. Is more fat soundin, etcc.
Mesa is way better for heavy metal. Marshall is great for classic rock and punk. Get a Mesa Roadking, and its good for anything(although expensive) If you want a good clean sound though, get an old fender twin reverb.
yeah for metal the dual rec is amazing. Freaking great 1000 bucks for the head. I heard somebody tell me that a marshall cab is better than the mesa cab though. I'm looking into it.
i play rock, hard rock, meatl, and a little blues. i want to make my money count. should i save for a mesa boogie (rectoverb, solo 50, express 50:5, one of those) or should i get a vavleking head? i also want a 212 cab most probably with vitage 30s. i see b 52 has a nice cheap one and framus too. but again should i save for the mesa 212?(either the stilleto or recto)
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
save for the mesa, peavey amps are terrible, also, i would recommend getting a lopoline signature 2x12 and loading it with eminence or weber, new celestions suck, especially v30's, that would be cheaper than the mesa cab.
V30's suck.... That's a bold statement, but it is your opinion.... It seems all the high end cabs are coming with the V30's in them.. I was very happy to see one in my Express!
well, they don't suck compared to alot of speakers, but there are better and for less money, celestion charges way too much, Weber makes a copy of the v30 that apparently sounds better than a real one, and its handmade in america per order, for $10 cheaper
yeah but neither satch nor vai use the distortion channels on their amps, they both use pedals and vai uses digital preamps to get tone. They just use the carvins and peaveys as poweramps, oh and yeah right, all amps are great? well then you should just buy a crate ss, because it must be great huh, dumbass
carlos santana sounds the same through almost every amp because of his touch. along with SRV. he played through a marshall and a fender twin. and yes he sounded the same.
me personally, i sound the same( with the exception of the amp voicing).
its how u attack the note, vibrato, picking style.
I have an F50. It is sofa king loud.

I also wonder if it got the right sound for say Petrucci and stuff like that. From this clip it sounds a bit more like the ACDC sound.
Mostly rock and blues, but it also would be great to pull some really metal sometimes too!!

i have exactly same problem with my rivera fandango. I have to use an additional dstortion pedal to get those sounds nad i'm not contented yet. I think it must be a heavy distortion
qqryq90 3 years ago
I have a new 1 by 12 5:25, simply amazing, every sound imagineable, go for one, you wont be disapointed. I also have a Mk2b woodie, mk4 woodie, lonestar classic (best clean in the world IMHO!) and a stilletto trident head. The express sounds just as good as all of the above, dare I say a little better in some departments. The boxyness of the mk serie is history! Hope this helps, good luck!

great tone and playing.

The Marshall Vintage Modern, fine amp but nowhere near the versatility of the Mesa. The Boogie is the Rolls Royce!
SMart7751 3 years ago
dude I just played one of these in the little music shop by my work.

Bought one of these yesterday after about a months worth of debate over which amp to get. Can't say I regret it, awesome amp.
nik3887 3 years ago
yieks love the sounds of this but just went over on ebay and one of these babies are selling for £1,200 a tad too expensive for me aghh. Sounds amazing though. Just bought an epiphone flying v sig guitar so want a better quality amp. Marshal 500's are pretty good arnt they?
jamesthq 3 years ago
if you want a goooooood marshall go for the JCM800 if you want a goood marshall go for the dsl.

don't forget the marshall vintage modern, it has also a killer sound.

u guys are all full of it....
the amp effects ur tone fully
but your style of playing will play throguh any
but different amps are colored different
a solid state fender 210 is nothing to my bogner shiva.....
i cannot get the same sound even with my attack and dynamics
rnrbear101 3 years ago
Agreed 100% ! I can pretty much gaurentee id sound different playing through this as opposed to a lesser amp.

Are your lead licks just played in the pentatonic minor? They sound really good to me, you have excellent dynamics or something.

What guitar did you use? Pickups?
fidothree 3 years ago
Thank you for this. Most of the "demos" on youtube suck because people use effects or a shitty recording setup. Or it's filled with talking instead of playing! I'm considering either this amp or a Koch Studiotone. Is the Express 5:50's 5 watt mode quiet enough for practicing?
TheTritoneTerror 3 years ago 5
I have the Koch Studiotone, TritoneTerror. It is a truly excellent amp, although I am told that in the US it's far more expensive than here in Europe... (at least we get to see some cheaper guitar gear than you US guys!!!!!)
Both this Mesa and the Koch are amazingly versatile and phenomenally loud, although you sometimes get the luxury of being able to crank the Koch (it's 20W of Class A). Or you can go for its brand new bigger brother, the Studiotone XL (40W of Class A).

I can say this amp is one of the best I have owned and I have auditioned about 14 amps in the past 2 months.

this amp costs 2200dollars in italy...
glmetal 4 years ago
I just bought the 5:50 and for the simple reason I don't play metal, more hard rock, Iron Maiden type of softer metal.... It's a great amp. I jumped back and forth between this and the Stilleto and this was all I needed.
Terror67 4 years ago
what is the song that he uses on the 2nd setting? (crunch channel i think) its simple but still sounds awsome.
bucknasty1148 4 years ago
what kind of mic is that?
bucknasty1148 4 years ago
i got a dsl and i like these better myself
bucknasty1148 4 years ago
More gain, more gain, more gain! Jesus, this amp isnt a "more gain" kinda amp! Theres more to life than "more gain". Get a clue, If your a mindless metal head this amp isnt for you! If you value any kind of sublety in your music then you might consider this amp, otherwise go play a p.o.s. Krank or Randall.
amg6724 4 years ago
played one today. my gig amp = roadster + 4 x 12. Have had Engl screamer + SE. Looking for home practice amp at mo + mesa have done it again. same standard formula...high price = high quality. with Roadster, only Deizel Herbert comes close(very) but at this size - 5:25 -I would take suggestions - chris

i must be honest, i rather enjoyed dat.....
motokev 4 years ago
Is that as high as the gain goes?
idontknow1965 4 years ago
don't think so when you give it max gain the amp wil burst this is a good one beut verrry expensive still prefere a fender delux from the 70's
yschepers12 4 years ago
The gain on a Express isnt very high so this may be the highest the gain goes. The Express wont do metal without help. So if your looking for metal look at some of Mesas other amps such as Rectos, Marks, Road King, Stilletos, etc.
2000ContourSVT 4 years ago
What brand is better, Mesa Boogie or Marshall???
thanx..
johnreal182 4 years ago
it's a matter of personal taste, not brand. it also depends on what music you play and what sound you're after. i personally like the mesa mark sereis, but not the dual/triple rectos etc.
domenjazz 4 years ago
Uhm i think mesa is more Metal than marshall. Don't get me wrong, i said "is more Metal" not only for metal, but that's my opinion. Is more fat soundin, etcc.
deathmetaliscool 4 years ago
i think marshall you cant go wrong with a decent marshall
pantallica21 4 years ago
You can't go wrong with any decent amp, hence it being "decent".
I don't trust Marshall anymore, ever since the MG series. THE WORST AMPS TO EVER GRACE THE PLANET: MG.
JohnMayer07 4 years ago 2
Mesa is way better for heavy metal. Marshall is great for classic rock and punk. Get a Mesa Roadking, and its good for anything(although expensive) If you want a good clean sound though, get an old fender twin reverb.
MetalMaster91 4 years ago
yeah for metal the dual rec is amazing. Freaking great 1000 bucks for the head. I heard somebody tell me that a marshall cab is better than the mesa cab though. I'm looking into it.
creedsuxass 4 years ago
they might have been but not any more, they' re using particle board shit now.
bucknasty1148 4 years ago
i play rock, hard rock, meatl, and a little blues. i want to make my money count. should i save for a mesa boogie (rectoverb, solo 50, express 50:5, one of those) or should i get a vavleking head? i also want a 212 cab most probably with vitage 30s. i see b 52 has a nice cheap one and framus too. but again should i save for the mesa 212?(either the stilleto or recto)
bucknasty1148 4 years ago
This comment has received too many negative votes show
save for the mesa, peavey amps are terrible, also, i would recommend getting a lopoline signature 2x12 and loading it with eminence or weber, new celestions suck, especially v30's, that would be cheaper than the mesa cab.
carvinlegacy99 4 years ago
holy shit those cabs r dope and super cheap, and ya i just found out how much better eminenice is than celestion.
bucknasty1148 4 years ago
V30's suck.... That's a bold statement, but it is your opinion.... It seems all the high end cabs are coming with the V30's in them.. I was very happy to see one in my Express!
Terror67 4 years ago
well, they don't suck compared to alot of speakers, but there are better and for less money, celestion charges way too much, Weber makes a copy of the v30 that apparently sounds better than a real one, and its handmade in america per order, for $10 cheaper
carvinlegacy99 4 years ago
LOL u have no idea mate ALL amps are great no artist uses just 1 amp !!! peavey Rockz satriani and vai use all types of amps to record with u idiot
satcheee 4 years ago
yeah but neither satch nor vai use the distortion channels on their amps, they both use pedals and vai uses digital preamps to get tone. They just use the carvins and peaveys as poweramps, oh and yeah right, all amps are great? well then you should just buy a crate ss, because it must be great huh, dumbass
carvinlegacy99 4 years ago
This comment has received too many negative votes show
crate are awesome amps you obiviously know nothing about using pedals to color your tone ? go play with ya self
satcheee 4 years ago
lol, i use s.s. crate amps for fire wood
bucknasty1148 4 years ago 7
Their s.s amps are disgusting.
Their tube amps aren't too bad though.
That1dude240 3 years ago 2
Remember reading somewhere that 10% of the tone is from the amp and 90% from the fingers . . .
yashicamatonline 3 years ago
The other way around I would think
F3llix 3 years ago 4
Depends on the fingers. :)
neiloler 3 years ago
no way. think about it.
its definitly ur fingers.
carlos santana sounds the same through almost every amp because of his touch. along with SRV. he played through a marshall and a fender twin. and yes he sounded the same.
me personally, i sound the same( with the exception of the amp voicing).
its how u attack the note, vibrato, picking style.
the amp has nothing to do with it besides comfort
