  • Great post. Amazing shot by Love and ignored in comparison to Tiger's.

Tiger went on to win. Thats a big issue when it comes to shots of legend.

Surely no one can deny the pause on the ball before it drops for Tiger is one of the classic moments of sporting theatre.

Both are amazing shots. In fairness before Tiger makes the chip the American comentators talk about Love's chip.

  • Your +1 handicap over youtube....Ive heard that one before. Im not denying that Davis Loves shot wasn't a fantastic shot, as a matter a fact it was a spectacular shot. However Im sick of bullshit comments like, "easy shot", everyone could hit it to two feet when the reality is it was one of the hardest chips on the entire golf course. The reason why no one talks about this shot is because he didn't even WIN. Tiger hits miracle shots so often to WIN. Thats why hes the greatest player whos lived.

  • @Whaleshark1993 A great shot from Tiger. But Davis's was just as good. Give him the same credit as Tiger.

  • @MrAJR76 I agree both shots are amazing. Tigers is better though considering the situation and because the shot ended up setting up the win. If Davis ended up winning this shot would be remembered WAY MORE, because all the great shots are part of a bigger picture, the victory.

  • Clearly you don't know anything about golf. Tigers lie was off the collar which makes it ridiculously tough to get the blade of the club on the ball. Secondly there is such a fine line between hitting a golf shot under pressure and just hitting a golf shot. Finally the announcer wouldn't call it one of the hardest pitches on the entire course if every one put it 1-2 feet dumb ass. Im pretty sure Verne Lundquist who's commentated on the 16th hole for over 20 years knows a little bit more than you

  • @Whaleshark1993 OK I'll take my +1 handicap that knows nothing about golf and sulk away you fool. Davis did it first, on a Sunday in contention only 1 shot back. Just give it up man, who are you anyway Tiger's mom? All you seem to be good at is calling people names. You're not in the same league pal, I doubt you know a wedge from a three metal.

  • Dear oh dear. Some of the comments on here are jolly rude. I thought golfers were supposed to be well-mannered! Anyway, I think BOTH shots are examples of fine play by great golfers in their prime. I don't think I could do it, or make it look that easy if I could. It's a game, folks, let's just enjoy it and not be quite so beastly.

  • I 100% agree that Tiger's shot was not as "incredible" as every one made it out to be, and as soon as he hit it, I remembered DL. I' m sure that Tiger saw this and remembered it. The slope is so severe that truly, you could hit the shot "wrong" and still have it go in. It rankles me that everyone forgets stuff before 1997 when Tiger won

  • I was at the 2005 Masters practice round on Wednesday. I sat right there for over 3 hours and watched dozens of guys hitting the "Love Shot" as there was a pin almost exactly in that spot. The way the green slopes on 16 makes it a pretty easy shot. All the guys were either holing it or getting it within 1-2 feet. What made Love's so much better than Tiger's is Love was the first to do it in tournament play but to be honest when Tiger was lining up his shot we all said It's actually pretty easy.

  • @buffalobraves9 that is such bullshit you fucking lier. No one consistently puts that to 1-2 feet. Tigers shot was better because of the whole situation. Dimarco was 10 feet for birdie and Tiger made it of the collar. Oh and Tiger actually won.

  • @Whaleshark1993 I was there, were you? Yeah, thought so. Every guy that came through there put it down close to the cup and some in. Have you ever played there? I have and it's a pretty easy shot if you can hit a 60 degree wedge which I'm assuming you can't. Oh, and go back to grammar school, it's spelled LIAR first grader.

  • honestly ignorant is the last word that's been used to describe my experience with the game of golf but i'll keep my qualifications private. if feeling the need to attack people on youtube is a reflection of the sports media, from which you claim to belong, then frankly i'm a little concerned.love hit the shot first and i agree that too little has been made of that.it was an equally clutch shot. the only thing that makes tiger's better is the lie in which the ball rested up against the cut. Done

  • @espen1400i think your a little misinformed about what i actually think. as tiger's was preparing to hit the shot, my brother and i were talking about love's. i originally was merely responding to a comment that said this was the harder shot because it was out of "heavy, uncontrollable rough," an entity that doesn't exist at the masters. i've given love full credit, i had no intention of starting an infantile debate as you call it. john hawkins, is that you?

  • I'm not supporting tiger, but watch the clip, because the commentators do mention Davis Love's shot within the first 25 seconds - ?v=I1I55z-x6zc

  • thought of this shot when tiger made his. nice post

  • if you were to ask Elin Woods whose shot was better think she would say this one !! its a fellin av got lol !!

  • @prw78 Davis Love still a betetr shot than Tiger ignored because he's not "black or as Tiger calls himself caublackasian or whatever Tiger

  • look for - 1999 Masters final round part 11 !! still say its better than tigers

  • actually, with tigers uphill lie he has a better chance at stopping the ball on the green, the camera could not give us an idea of how close the ball was to the rough, at the masters they use rye grass and it is easier to get the club through the rough than us open rough therefore was not a factor in tigers chip, this is a much better shot considering Davis needed to make it to stay in contention whereas tiger was already the leader and only needed par

  • i say this is much better than that other guys ! is nobody else to hole a shot like it but tiger ??

  • for those who are saying this is the better shot your probably only looking at the path the ball took, which was a bit more crazy, but tiger's shot was right up against the thick rough, with a bigger elevation change (course modification in between the 2 shots), and then the slightly slower greens made it a lot harder to reach the hole off the slope, so a more precise shot was required. As impressive as this shot was, tiger's was a way better shot technically speaking.

  • I'm glad you posted this.....when Vern Lundquist said "in your life have you seen a shot like that" I thought YEAH IN 1999 DAVIS LOVE DID IT! It WAS on Sunday and he WAS in contention. I still love Tiger but there are other players who can hit the same shots he hits, just not all the time like he does.

  • @fauxmaestro yeah but the whole point is tiger did it when Dimarco was with him in the final pairing within 7 feet for birdie to go ahead, Tiger knew Dimarco would make it so he had to do that or go to 17 1 shot down. Olazabal hadn't yet played 15 which is arguably the easiest hole on the course and usually a shoe in for birdie. And the reason it's so much mroe significant is that it was essential for him to win the tournament. Davis's chip didnt play a factor in the outcome

  • @bogusmaan you can't say it didn't figure in the outcome....every shot hit figures in the outcome. That being said, I'm not taking away anything from Tiger. It's just that this business about Tiger being "the only guy in the field that could hit that shot" that we heard for so long is crazy. Lots of guys can and have hit incredible shots, just like Tiger.

  • Wow, didn't know Davis Love III had this shot before. I give him props, but....... I still think Tiger's was more dramatic and thus better.

  • @NicholasCrensen nah Love's dad died during that time frame and he was in contention. Woods was jsut promoted more.

  • wow man thanks for the vid. ive never seen this before, it may have been even better than tigers shot!!

  • I have never seen that! That was amazing. I don't care if you like DL3 or not.

  • It was in the final round.

  • @catzrthecoolest wrong he was in contention

  • @catzrthecoolest Fuck Tiger, what do you think of that. "Tigers was more crucial" why dont you go suck his dick like all the other whores.

  • Great shot been looking for this for a while.

  • Thanks for posting. Most people don't know Davis made this before Tiger. The 2005 chip in turned out to be crucial for Tiger because he choked on the last 2 holes.

  • Silly comment.

  • Not silly, Tiger did bogey the next 2 holes.

  • Tiger bogeyed the next two holes but he also played the sudden death play off perfectly. Its silly to say that he choked.

  • I didn't mention the sudden death, did I? But he did bogey the 71st and 72nd hole, that's a choke. But he got away with it.

  • You didn't mention it, thats why I did. People do tend to ignore events when it doesn't favour their argument. He didn't get away with it all, whether he choked or not on 17 and 18, he took the tournament into his own hands on 18 and got the job done.

  • tigers chip was harder.love just had a downslope to contend with , woods had a down slope and side slope to contend with.woods gets more credit coz his ball hung on the lip for so long, and he went on to win.

  • Not exactly. Love had the same sideslope too, but he was well into the first cut while Tiger's ball was on the fringe with the back of his ball against that first cut. Both were extremely dangerous positions, with Love having to make sure he carries out of the rough while Tiger had to make sure he didn't skull his chip across the green because he can't get his ball in the air with that lie.

  • all im saying is tigers chip was harder-i know what shot i would rather be faced with and i play off 7.

  • @bigpaulothe1st ugh no Tiger's shot was easier its harder to deal with heavy uncontrable rough than a fringe shot

  • @deltapunk21 there is no such thing as heavy uncontrollable rough at augusta. both were great chips but tiger's was more difficult because he was up against the cut of the rough and had no option but to play it low and in the back of his stance. from what i can see from davis' shot, he had a pretty good lie in the rough and could play virtually any shot he wanted.

  • Comment removed

  • @espen1400 you're right, i'm just a typical tiger fan. good call. tiger's even said after the fact that he thought about DL3's chip-in as he prepared to hit the shot. my comment took nothing away from love's; it's an incredible shot at a crucial time but i stand by what i said in terms of the difficulty. ask any pro whether he wants a ball up against a 3-inch cut or sitting in an even lie in marginal rough and they will pick the latter everytime, guaranteed.

  • @rdub1050 Terms of dif??? I reported both stories and have talked with several pros and other journalists about both shots over the years. Love thought of this shot first, that's the whole idea, and there was no even lie about the shot Love made. Anyone who has tried to chip from a place like Love did, know how hard it is to gget the right flight. Both shots are incredible, but I'm tired of listening to people always trying to give Tiger the honour of doing everything best.

  • @espen1400he thought of the shot first?how about he was presented with the situation first.i bet i could place you in your infinite wisdom and you would play it in a similar fashion.i dont see how you can argue against love having a better lie. i'm not trying to give tiger extra credit, if the roles were reversed i would say that love hit the better shot.to be honest,it seems like your the typical tiger detractor while i've actually given reasons for my argument, you've proven you can condescend.

  • @rdub1050 Condescend? Thta's your ball park. This is an infantile debate. I don't even see why you start the "But Tiger's shot was better" posting. Love hit it first, and the whole world has credited Tiger for that shot. That's what I'm tired of: Ignorance. And I'm tired of fools like you telling me what I think. I have been a golf reporter and tv commentator for over ten years - don't get me started on condescending you. That would hurt.

  • @espen1400 Love did what first? chip in on 16? i'm sure its been done before that and in non competition golf but nobody cares right? Point is that it didn't effect the outcome of the tournament and tiger's was essential. You must be one of those reporters that keeps writing he's finished.

  • @bogusmaan Love hit the exact same chip on 16 in the final round in contention......

  • @rdub1050 Of course Tigers was more difficult, if not you would'nt have as much of a reason to want to suck him off like everyone else.

  • I remember this shot so clearly. Well done for posting it.

People are so keen to heap praise on Tiger, but DL3 did it first!!

And this was at a crucial stage on a dramatic final day in '99.

  • Did DLIII win? No. Did he ever win the Master's? No. So shut it.

  • Davis was under just as much pressure as Tiger was at the time of the shot. That's the point. Whether they went on to win or not is irrelevant.

Tiger went bogey-bogey after his chip-in & got taken to a play-off, so his shot didn't turn out to be so crucial after all.

    Just give Davis some credit!!!!!

  • All credit to Davis. But Tiger still won, and he lost.

  • @daveu01 Did Davis Love screw eveyrthing that moved while his wife pregnant think not. DL3 did it first and Tiger lucked out after getting his thought from DL3 woods was there that day and remember the shot and thats where it came from. Whining and moaning about your precious failure Woods to take away from a major winner and great career from DL3 is petty atypical atypical of a tiger worshipping cocksucker

  • @deltapunk21 You sound pretty angry. Did Tiger screw your mom?

  • DLIII ! ! ! This is one of the my most memorable shots as a golf fan.

  • I've always wanted to see this - thanks!

  • Tiger got the idea and some of the placement from Love...he's the first to do this...

  • Woods made his chip in 2005, not 2002. Woods probably gets more attention because he went on to win unlike Love.

  • In the hole, Davis!

  • Thanks for posting. FWIW, I believe the announcer (Nantz?) sounds less excited and spontaneous than expected because, to me, it looks like they weren't showing this shot live--they replayed it after they had just shown someone else's shot.

True, Woods has more "it" and popularity than Love (although Love is a *great* guy), and it's a shame this shot seems to be ignored, but Tiger's shot figured huge in his win, while Love couldn't catch JMO.

  • u need to change your description to 6 years later cuz tiger holed that shot in 2005, they were both equally impressive in my opinion

  • i told my friend that love did it before tiger and he laughed. some people only see one man.... tiger woods. this is the better shot of the 2 in my opinion.

  • I'm gonna agree with gman0674.Probably '99.Davis is great, especially when he shot that 64 at The Players Championship when it was raining in 2003.I really expected him to win more than one major though.

  • I would not call Davis "Great", seems to have always had a lot of potential but has failed to live up to expectations. Kinda like what you said in your last sentence. Normally watching him play is like watching paint dry.

  • Davis was a great player. He spent like 8 years consecutive in the top 10 of the World Rankings and the PGA Money List. 19 PGA titles. Four consecutive wins at the World Cup of golf with Fred Couples as his partner. Five time Ryder Cup team member with a 3-1-1 record in singles. Trust me, he was a great player.

  • Thanks for posting...what year was this? I'm thinking '02...

  • By the look of the leaderboard I thinks it's when Olazábal won in 1999.

  • I remember seeing this on TV a long time ago. Similar to Tiger's.

  • I watched this again and there was a huge crowd for DL too, but still not the explosion as with Tiger

  • no offense to DL III, but Tiger has everything else going for him too, and DL doesn't. Tiger is so much more fascinating to watch - obviously - and this is an amazing shot too, but it wasn't NEARLY as exciting as the huge crowd in 2005 and the pairing of Woods and DiMarco, and of course the lip delay before the ball dropped

  • are you Tigers personal ball washer?

  • Which balls? lol

  • You wash Tiger's balls....DLove has a major and a good career...stop being a bitch

  • Personally I think this is also a great bit of commentary. Understated but nicely done.

  • lol how scandelous. Its because of davis love's personality, and u have to give credit to tiger's chip, everything was so perfect, from the way the nike logo showed on the last roll, how the ball stayed on the lip for about 2 seconds, the announcer's great voice and commentary"Oh wow, in you're life have you ever seen anything like that" its just implanted in our heads. In this one the announcer sounded like if he wanted to go hom, davis love is a boring fart, and the chip wasnt as dramatic

  • @TheBull06 tiger is a piece of shit love was well liked and it was just as dramatic going toe to toe againsr mediate ain't the bee knees.
