The main reason I wouldn't buy a Mac is their prices. You pay 3-4 times as much for a Mac as you would if you bought an equivalent Windows machine. I would almost never go through warranty for something like that(assuming you can even change the HDD yourself on a Mac) Just like my car, I'd never take it to a garage because they'll charge you insanely and barely fix the prob. Windows is cheap, easy to use(unless you're retarded) and fixable yourself. Macs may be good PCs but not for the price...

Extracting data from a harddrive, that has bad heads, cost ton's of money, on any computer or laptop. Due to you need to find the same revision drives for parts, special tools to remove the heads and a multimillion dollar cleanroom, plus cost of the new external harddrive.

Not Apple fault, harddrives go bad all the time, learn to backup your data!! Go to "eco data recovery" their charge about $600 if it recoverable, but you have to provide your own external drive.

My sympathies - I lost an entire desktop Mac Pro coz of some bullshit. I didn't have the Apple Care though...Now I back anything important up on Dropbox, time machine and an external harddrive.

Hopefully they've gone some way to solving this problem now they have the iCloud + all applications can be downloaded again for free, so if you're harddrive breaks, there's nothing to lose except your time getting it replaced

All hard drives suffer from failure at some point, this is why all major platforms make backup easy, Apple have time machine present since 10.5.
