Não importa se outras línguas têm uma tradução imediata para a palavra saudade... só em português - e em seus filhos, como é o crioulo - a palavra se traduz em fados, mornas, lunduns, xotes, baiões, serestas e outras pérolas que enchem os olhos d'água e o coração de melancolia. E isso basta!
@MrJotaCS Obviamente, e mais: só no universo da língua/cultura portuguesa essa palavra traduz um sentimento de dor e prazer simultâneo que é o "doce penar" (o "sweet sorrow" de Shakespeare) de sentir a falta de algo ou alguém que se ama. Não é que esse sentimento não exista para as pessoas de outras línguas e culturas - mas o português será das poucas línguas em que ele teve a honra de ter uma palavra única para nomeá-lo.

the translation doesn't even matter, the way she puts her soul into it and her voice make you dream at some beautiful, imaginary place. My mother told me she came to our country a long time ago.

Portuguese language buffs boast there's no word for quite the meaning of saudade (sodade in cape verde creole) in any other language. Nostalgia comes close, but doesn't quite grasp it. I just don't see this song going "Nostalgia...nostalgia..."
Advice: use the melody and make up other lyrics, but don't try to translate.
@TheDunboll As far as I can research she is not a composer, only a "re-creator" at the moment of performance.
Although I agree that the music will touch you even if you don't understand every word, knowing a few words will surely help, but you have to KNOW them, not translate them - meanings have a way to get "lost in translation."
So, there's no way around it: learn the language, even if just superficially, to get a grasp of the true meaning.

Mas não existe um substantivo com a riqueza de significado da palavra portuguesa "saudade"...cuja raiz é solidão, ("solitudine", em italiano talvez ande perto) mas que significa MUITO mais!

Eles tem uma falta de alguma coisa que ficou no passado, e saudade é mais que "falta". Eu não "tenho nostalgia de minha mãe": tenho saudade. A saudade é especial porque traduz uma vontade de que algo do passado estivesse presente e porque é uma tristeza que traz a felicidade da lembrança. A maior parte das outras línguas não tem uma só palavra que diz tudo isso.

I just saw her in concert in Los Angeles. She was Amazing! The Boston Globe says: her "beguiling voice of longing, cured by cognac, cigerette & melancholy"...She is much slimmer now and much shorter than on all her pictures. She does not dance or move. She just stands with a microfone and sings with her velver voice! But that is not important! The theather was packed and people were dancing in their seats, including me:) Thank you Cesaria!
Hi! Last time i've been in Boston (10 years ago) there it was this store and "sodade" was playng. I've have the proud to also understand the lyrics - "sodade" or "SAUDADE" in portuguese has no possible translation in onde word other language. There are other verses so simple as magnificant!
Cesária Évora (born Mindelo, São Vicente Island, Cape Verde, 27 August 1941), is a Cape Verdean popular singer. Nicknamed the barefoot diva for her preference for performing without shoes, Évora is perhaps the best internationally-known practitioner of Morna, not Fado.
The morna (pronunciation in both Portuguese and Cape Verdean Creole ['mɔɾnɐ]) is a music and dance genre from Cape Verde.
No one said this was Fado, but Cesária has been known to sing Fado as well as Samba. She has a very versatile voice wich she can adapt with ease to various intonations. An Artist with capital A, up there at level with the greatest. Se would be certainly much more famous if she were french or english or american...but then, she woudn't sing the morna this way either...
The song Sodade was her first international hit, the first hit for a non-French song in France, and marked the beginning of worldwide fame for Cesária Évora. The Portuguese term saudade is complex and infamously difficult to translate, related to homesickness, nostalgia, longing, sadness from missing someone.
I know her..huuhhh ...probably 10 years and I still love her.
She is the only artist who smokes and drinks on the stage barefoot performing in Berkeley, California..that little university screwed up town...otherwise she wont come here...

I find the discussion of the relationship between Portuguese and Cabo Vedrean Criole to be very interesting. I don't speak either of these languages but I do speak Spanish and English. Just from speaking Spanish and English I can read Portuguese and Cabo Verdean Criole and figure out 90% of it. It amazes me, therefore, that Portuguese speakers say they don't understand Cabo Verdean Criole. I would like to know if Portuguese speakers can at least understand the lyrics of this song written out?
"Written out" IS easier. But Criole mixes in native african vocabulary, that make it a whole different language and can make it undecipherable, even for a native portuguese, even in written form.

I agree with your remark about the language, you don't need to understand every word, the music will touch you anyway

@TheDunboll As far as I can research she is not a composer, only a "re-creator" at the moment of performance.
Although I agree that the music will touch you even if you don't understand every word, knowing a few words will surely help, but you have to KNOW them, not translate them - meanings have a way to get "lost in translation."
So, there's no way around it: learn the language, even if just superficially, to get a grasp of the true meaning.

@garcezdii eu sei, e é isso que tentamos aqui mostrar aos anglófonos. Mas é uma "falta" à portuguesa ou neste caso, luso-africana, é o prazer de lembrar e a dor de não esquecer, é a melancolia da separação, a tristeza de quem vai e de quem fica, é a alegria da volta, ainda que só em pensamento. É tudo isso e muito mais, que não se pode traduzir por palavras, mas que cabe dentro desse sentimento ímpar e único de "sodade"...que só quem fala português conhece!

@garcezdii "essa palavra" - qual? não existe! existe "missing" (dar pela falta), "nostalgia", quase chega perto, "to be homesick" tem uma engraçada tradução à letra: "doença de casa"...
Mas não existe um substantivo com a riqueza de significado da palavra portuguesa "saudade"...cuja raiz é solidão, ("solitudine", em italiano talvez ande perto) mas que significa MUITO mais!
Percebes, porque és português!

@garcezdii As outras línguas tem um significado que não é propriamente "saudade", mas o que em português seria mais "nostalgia". Eles tem uma falta de alguma coisa que ficou no passado, e saudade é mais que "falta". Eu não "tenho nostalgia de minha mãe": tenho saudade. A saudade é especial porque traduz uma vontade de que algo do passado estivesse presente e porque é uma tristeza que traz a felicidade da lembrança. A maior parte das outras línguas não tem uma só palavra que diz tudo isso.

I love this beautiful song and her beautiful voice. I'm brazilian and I can understand her portuguese, although it's a little bit different from mine. I have this song as well and I just can't listen to it only once, I have to repeat it many times because it invades my soul very gentle and softly. Nobody can resist. Someone told me that Madonna loves her too and many other artists in the whole world, but unfortunately in Brazil she's not so recognised. I hope it changes.

I just saw her in concert in Los Angeles. She was Amazing! The Boston Globe says: her "beguiling voice of longing, cured by cognac, cigerette & melancholy"...She is much slimmer now and much shorter than on all her pictures. She does not dance or move. She just stands with a microfone and sings with her velver voice! But that is not important! The theather was packed and people were dancing in their seats, including me:) Thank you Cesaria!

Hi! Last time i've been in Boston (10 years ago) there it was this store and "sodade" was playng. I've have the proud to also understand the lyrics - "sodade" or "SAUDADE" in portuguese has no possible translation in onde word other language. There are other verses so simple as magnificant!

No one said this was Fado, but Cesária has been known to sing Fado as well as Samba. She has a very versatile voice wich she can adapt with ease to various intonations. An Artist with capital A, up there at level with the greatest. Se would be certainly much more famous if she were french or english or american...but then, she woudn't sing the morna this way either...

The Portuguese term saudade is complex and infamously difficult to translate, related to homesickness, nostalgia, longing, sadness from missing someone.

Not "infamously" difficult, just very rich in meaning. It's all those words rolled into one, which gives a different meaning to portuguese nostalgia.

I find the discussion of the relationship between Portuguese and Cabo Vedrean Criole to be very interesting. I don't speak either of these languages but I do speak Spanish and English. Just from speaking Spanish and English I can read Portuguese and Cabo Verdean Criole and figure out 90% of it. It amazes me, therefore, that Portuguese speakers say they don't understand Cabo Verdean Criole. I would like to know if Portuguese speakers can at least understand the lyrics of this song written out?

"Written out" IS easier. But Criole mixes in native african vocabulary, that make it a whole different language and can make it undecipherable, even for a native portuguese, even in written form.
