I started playing guitar at age 9 and actually learned both by ear AND by studying classical and jazz guitar,with various teachers. I even got a scholarship to study at University of Toronto,Canada's best music school,but joined my first serious band,the Philosopher Kings at that time,and eventually dropped out to tour full time when we got a major record deal with Sony.
If I had to choose only one method,I would say,learn by ear .

Your playing is amazing:) My only complain would be about sound - it's pretty 'flat", i lacks depth. Anyway I'm still impressed.
