  • i get the error that "matroska stream doesn't have samplerate"...

  • how long does a conversion of a 700 mb .mkv file take?

  • Look, do you want to know the easiest way to convert MKV files into whatever file type you want?

It is so simple, just open the MKV in windows live movie maker, then save it as a wmv file, from there you can use any basic converter to make it whatever file format you want.

I know, I felt stupid after spending an entire day on the internet trying to figure this out when it was this simple.

  • @DemonfireNinja windows movie maker doesn't support mkv =/

  • Yeah. It couldn't open for mine.

  • it doesn't open mkv's o_o

  • can you burn these to reg dvd after the conversion?

  • how did u do this, cuz i have a newer version of virtdub and it doesnt support mkv

  • @MrRPeaper same problem

  • Does it support all the mkv files?

  • does it destort the quality

  • all that clicking made me thirsty....

  • Why would you want to convert mkv?

  • @hedonism13 for example anime

  • @hedonism13 xbox360 doesnt play mkv files.

  • just use MediaCoder. google it.

  • so is this thing free?

  • I am using 1.5. The EXACT one...and it said it couldnt determine the file type...

  • Mkv's are not supported on this program....FAIL

  • Does anybody know if doing this would reduce the quality? Because i'm going to convert some 1080p mkv's to avi's.

  • The quality will be maintained during conversion?

  • what program did you use for ur screen recorder?

  • does the subs include??

  • I have for sale my entire MKV movie collection in 720p and 1080p resolution. Included in +450 DVD (both 4.7Gb & 8.5Gb). Check out the auction:

Just search +450 movie in ebay.co.uk

  • I saw while you were scrolling a corona.dll

when i downloaded virtual dub mod, it didn't come with it so when i went to run it-- just said cannot open, corona.dll not found.

Judging by the fact the download is 4 years old, and lacking in support... I'll just assume the whole things been junked since.

  • Will it keep its bluray screen quality ?

  • I used Direct Stream Copy. Still abnormally large file.

  • Dude this program doesn't even read MKV LOOOL what garbage

  • VirtualDub dont even know what MVK is by default.

If you don thave codec installed you out of luck and this tutorials is nothing but a misleading.

  • Just use xvid4psp and mkv extract gui

  • wont work with 80% of mkv's

  • has anyone ever told you your mouse makes a cool noise when it clicks?

  • my MKV is too big and crashes vDub :|

    XD

  • your video still huge? just use bitrates instead of quality. set it to 3000kbps if u are not using any bigger than 720p. just demux the audio, video and subtitles and mux them to avi.. is it that hard guys?

  • will mkv subtitles be displayed on the avi if done correctly?

  • @caseybar ya subtitles will show properly ....

  • i couldnt even open mkv on that it just crashed when i tried opening one

  • Doesn't work with all MKV's

  • try using alltoavi to do the conversion

  • i have a prob my video is after convert 10 GB big o.O ???

  • please make sure you use "Direct Stream Copy" This will ensure that you do not get large file sizes. You can find this when you are saving your new avi file in a pop down menu which is preset to FULL PROCESSING MODE. Reset that to DIRECT STREAM COPY

  • @12345basha12345 Are you using Avisynth along with Virtualdub? If so Avisynth will give you a uncompressed video which will be quite large such as yours. You would need to use Full Processing Mode in Virtualdub to bring it down to a more appropriate size.

  • >.> fail! You wont get audio! Secondly you'll get a HUGE file doing what you just did!

  • you're not doing it properly then... Make sure to choose direct stream copy when you are saving your avi file.

You should get audio. Make sure that when exporting you are not exporting video only. Make sure there are audio streams that haven't been disabled by virtualdub(mod)... I found that it may sometimes turn off audio and video streams even though you can see/hear it when ur previewing... if this doesn't work... well then u'll need a different method... try super converter

  • nothing free that would convert an entire movie :(

  • super converter... try that

  • where can i download a mkv codec for virutaldub?

  • just search it on google... i can't post links on comments... but if you just search "mkv codec" on google, you'll get the codec.

  • what type do you use? lazy man, cccp... cuz i installed both of these and none worked with virtualdubmod, i get this long list showing errors when i try to open a mkv on virutaldubmod

  • try to use this program for conversion

    "alltoavi.exe"

search it on google... i am sure its one of the top 5 links....

  • He uses virtualdubMOD not virtualdub. It comes with MKV support...

  • use k-lite codec pack no cccp

  • that was first one. Doesn't work for me either. :(

I'm ok now, I'm just going to do another method besides virtualdub(mod).

  • i have one question, can i convert my 1080p movie which is in .mkv format to .avi but without loosing quality (mkv bit rate is about 11Mbps)

  • you shouldn't lose quality in a Direct Stream Conversion.

But its hard to say b/c there are other factors that contribute to bad conversions... Try it out and check the bit rate of the avi file... should be the same...

  • Do you know how to burn in libass subs?

  • Go to STREAM > STREAM LIST

then click on ADD and add the subtitle.

Then convert the file using VDubMod to AVI

  • is that hardsubbed?

  • when you add the sub file and reconvert to an AVI, then the sub file gets merged into the new AVI container... so yes... it is hardsubbed...

  • I found the Virtual Dub Mod, but I can't even open up a MKV file, and VDM usually crashes afterwards.

  • take a look at the beginning of the video and make sure you have a folder for VDubb that looks kind of like that one. its at 0:05. If that isn't right, then download the full VDub with ALL source files inclusive

  • Same with me

  • where can i get this converting software

  • search up "Virtual Dub Mod" on google. Its easy to find from there..

  • Hey man can you send me link for download, cause in my version, every time I want to load mkv file it sends me an error.

  • there is no sound

  • I've follow the video, but i have no sound. why?

  • See if VirtualDubMod is reading an input audio stream by playing the video once you open it and see if you get sound...

  • yes i get sound...but i found a better program. im using all to avi.....thanks anyway

  • hahah thats funny b/c there is another one of my mkv tutorials on alltoavi... welll glad alltoavi worked...

  • whenever I tried to open All to Avi , my computer shuts down..

  • hmm... what type of OS(Operating System) are you running and is you computer 32 bit or 64 bit??

  • windows XP 32 bit

  • well, i figure that your problem is with software compatibility. There could likely be a problem of low memory or low disk space. If memory is the issue, try cleaning up some stuff form your PC, or alternatively, either use a different video converter (super converter) or try downloading a different version of alltoavi (preferably an older one)...

  • it doesnt really matter what platform since i use the 64 bit and no porblem I guess in his case its just software comflict and other codecs.

  • ye... that is possibly a problem...

its hard to tell with this software considering it was independently developed....

  • Can you please tell me what's the name of that program?

    Thanks.

  • I am not sure what program you are referring to but the one used in the above tutorial is VIRTUAL DUB MOD....

The one that Beanye used is a program called ALLTOAVI....

And if none of these work, you can also try SUPER CONVERTER....

    hope that helps ^_^

  • Ohh haha thanks ^.^

I'm trying the ALLTOAVI hope it will work :]

  • I see! Thanks... I'll try it

  • Thats working with subtitles?

  • if you have subtitles it should work with them....

  • 1.9.2 of it is rubish, i can't even open the .mkv files and i can't find the 1.5 version...

  • Why did you get 1.9.2 when it clearly says its not a stable version yet. Just get 1.8.8 :)

  • question how bout if the mkv file has subtitles and no subs what do I do?

  • do you want to keep the subtitles???

  • maybe

  • well if you want to keep the subs... then you just follow the instructions in the video... if you want to remove subs... then you go to STREAM>STREAM LIST

in there disable the subtltle stream...

  • also I can't seem to find your version of visual dub, link please

  • What website did you get your converter from?

  • annoying cursor sound you have

  • Will I lose any quality after converting?

  • you shouldn't...

  • Whenever converting anything you will of course lose -some- quality. It wont be any drastic amount. But its unavoidable no matter what software you use.

  • yep... that's pretty much the thing with conversions....

  • he have waltdisney.mkv.avi file! this is fake!

  • hahah... no .... the new file is a .avi.... the original file was named with the extension so therefore the appended .mkv wasn't truncated...

  • Do you have a tutorial for Super Converter? Cause I tried converting an MKV file there. And it had errors! And the video was dark as hell!

  • I don't have a tutorial for Super Converter. If the MKV didn't convert in that you'll have to use other methods. But before that, try the direct decode option. Otherwise use VirtualDubMod.

  • uhhh how do i know

    if the mkv is special???

  • If it is, it won't open in VirtualDubMod.

If it opens then you don't need to use any other method. :D

  • I have roughly 70+ mkv videos which all play fine, but when I try and open any of them in vdmod 1.5.10 I get a massive amount of errors at different timestamps saying "MKV: a frame of stream 1 (at XXX ms) had only a forward reference (maybe broken fiile)"

I would really love to post some of these on youtube so any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

  • The problem here is with VDub Mod's MKV file viewer which is outdated therefore causing errors such as the one you see. The mkv file you have is a so-called SPECIAL MKV file. I have posted another tutorial in order to do these kinds of conversions. Look up 'Converting special mkv files to avi' in the related videos. Should be the first one. Or you can find it on my channel in my videos..

  • Thanks. I'll look up that other video you mention

  • I opened up the MKV in mkvmerge and there were only 2 tracks, a V_MPEG4/ISO/AVC (ID 1, type: video) and a A_VORBIS (ID 2, type: audio). Nothing like the extra stuff in your "Converting special mkv files into avi". Any ideas?

  • does that mean if i turn a mkv file to a avi file will i be able to put it in windows movie maker (2.6)?

  • ya once its and avi, you can do all the actions that you can do with a normal avi file

  • Well i converted it succesfully but every freaking time i download AVI all i get are no pictures in it. just sound and like a trans moving thing. You see no pictures in it in stuff. can you help me?

  • Oh well your problem is easy to solve. What your problem is that you are missing the required video codecs needed to play the avi file. to fix this, get this codec pack. Just search it up on google. Its called the "K-Lite Codec Pack". It has virtually all the video and audio codecs videos are encoded in. Download it and install it and it will solve your problem.

  • OMG. thank you so much!! ^_^

  • But hold on am i suppose to download the Basic, Standard, Full, Mega, Corporate, or 64-bit.

  • well I use the full b/c i download lot of videos with awkward encoding so its helpful to have that one. I suggest either Full or Standard. Mega is overkill.

  • dude can it be liike a HD mkv file?

  • try it out... i am not sure if it will actually work...

but from what i know since its a direct stream copy, it should work flawlessly... as in you should get a HD avi... however, maybe there may be some loss of quality just from conversion to avi. it usually hard to notice this kind of a change with standard definition videos... try it out and tell me how it goes...

  • um... well i tried it it went when and there where about a few bad frames buut still uploaded them to youtube and it was HD

  • ya... the few bad frames are probably due to the fact that the avi couldn't retain quality for some of them but for the most part, avi is generally good with conversions...

  • yea

  • OMG i love you man. ive been trying to find something that can do this forever. Not to be homoerotic or anything but if i knew who you were i could fucking hug you

  • ahahahahahh.... lol.... well said... its hard to find mkv conversion tools...

  • this isnt a convert its a rename lol

  • umm no 0:46

  • Love that sound

  • How do i convert asf files to Avi?

  • Doesn't open .mkv files.

  • Can Virtual Dub 1.5 choose which language you want for it. I have an mkv file which has 2 languages but I only need one when it becomes an avi.

  • Too bad the good quality decreases and the subtitles are GONE! o_0 What a hell it is to have a MKV File!!

  • wont open mkv files...

  • no, I like Lion king, but my favorite movies ar the disney/pixar ones

    E.G Toy Story

  • will i lose my HD quality?

    when i switch to .avi??

  • no... as it will be a direct stream copy of the original... so there should only be a slight loss in quality depending on the format you are converting to. But avi is generally good...

  • Lol convert walt disney

  • does WindowsMovieMaker support .avi files?

  • yes

  • Yes as long as you have the right codec.

  • 1:41 min. to explain basically this: "In Virtual Dub, OPEN the mkv file, then SAVE AS .avi format". ...Cool! :-L

  • actually he's rite. walt disney has some good stuff. some of the early movies susch as the lion king ad the little mermaid had some perverted stuff. ex. in the lion king when simba is talking to his dad at nite, in the sky the stars spell out sex. in the little mermaid on the cover in the castle, well hidden, is a womans 'plaything'. thats one of the reasons they're "digitally remastering" them to edit those parts out.

  • no way... ur missing out on the good stuff man =P

  • I hate Lion King, Alladin is the pimp, watched that movie over 20 times

  • Waste of time...

  • working WHIT VirtualDubMod_1_5_10_2

    but DONT WORK whit VirtualDub-1.8.6

so be careful what you download

  • THIS ONE SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • tnx...this really helped me a lot

  • I've been reading a few comments, and it seems like people are having trouble opening .mkv file or any video file for that matter. Don't fret, you can just go ahead and proceed to "save as".

Your newly saved file properly works!

  • Actually, your other tutorial helped, thanks

  • Nah, couldn't open MKV file, horseshit, waste of time

  • I had problems like..

    A lot of..

MKV: A frame of stream 1 (at 1349598) had only a forward reference (maybe broken file)

    And..

MKV: Video frames seems to be weirdly ordered.

MKV: The video may have a variable framerate. If so we strongly advise you to use another tool to safely process your file.

    Help me please.. ;_;

  • Even if I ignore the Warning, it still won't open or save as a .avi file

  • late reply... but try the special mkv tutorial... that might work better

  • I'm having warning like

MKV: A Frame of stream 1 (at 3501543) had only forward reference(maybe broken file)

lots of that and some like these

MKV: Video frames seems to be weirdly ordered.

  • if you can, try to override the warnings if not, comment again and i can help you...

  • I try to ignore the warnings but the video doesn't show.

I have a suggestion. I'll send you some screenshots of the problems. Maybe you can tell me too what to screenshot so you'll get a clear picture of the problem I'm encountering.

I'll probably send it to you later. I've got a class right now and I'm kinda in a hurry.

  • same problem here

  • great job thx ;)

  • I need help it says cannot detec the file blah blah please answer back^^

  • it might be because the mkv support on VDubb is not updated. Try one of my other tutorials on Converting SPECIAL MKV files...

  • Did you have to pay for the converter?

  • No it's free.

  • no... it was free

  • When I click save as I see that communicate:

The decompression codec cannot decompress to an RGB format. This is very unusual. Check that any "FORCE YUY2" options are not enabled in the codec's properties.

  • if this method doesn't work... you can search up something called a frameserver system using a encoder.... with the frame server you can convert media live as you watch it.... it usually works better however take longer to do... search up frameserver and virtual dub...

  • why subs are remove

  • That is free?

  • after the video is done converting from mkv to avi will it lose the video quility perfermance????

  • no... it should look exactly the same as it is the DIRECT STREAM COPY

  • Will you be able to import it to Windows Movie Maker after you've converted it?

  • yes

  • YOU SHOULD HAVE THE AUDIO AND VIDEO NOW

  • sorry i wrote in caps... i am not yelling... my caps button was on... sry

  • wait how come theres no sound when i play it?

  • TY SOOOO MUCH IT REALLY HELPED :)

  • Thanks for the demo! It looks really simple. I don't know how some of these guys can't understand it.

  • yeah... it is quite easy but some people might have a difficulties as to some issues with their computer... VDubs performance depends on some files in the VDub source folder... however some windows files or background processes sometimes interfere with VDub performance... other than that, i don't know any other problem that many people encounter... other the using the wrong version of course...

  • yea i'm have 2 try number 2 option cause this tutorial i did abouslty everything u said n did n it didn't work!

  • i seriously need help!!! i'm trying convert mkv 2 any playable so i can watch it on windows media player n others! please i NEED HELP!

  • ok i have 2 solutions for this problem...

    1. you can view this tutorial, see if your mkv file gets converted

    OR

    2. use a program called "SUPER CONVERTOR", search it up on GOOGLE... it is a little difficult to find... i will post a tutorial on it soon

  • Great tutorial it9001. 1 question. I can't play .mkv in powerdvd 7.2. tried changing the name and installed hiili media splinter, but still no luck. CAn you help me with that?

  • look at the reccomendation for tinyraskalG

  • thx for the great vid
