i have a question.(and btw this was a GREAT tutorial) i just got my bamboo tablet yesterday, and it came with Photoshop 7.0. when i use my tablet anywhere but PS it works. but when i try to draw on ps it doesn't. can someone please reply to this!
Oh! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I've had my tablet for a while, but it was driving me nuts. Just knowing about keystrokes will change my life. Great tutorial - I will now go and play properly :-D
That was a very informative video, great tips. Thank you for taking time to make this video. Got the pen and touch tablet and was about to return it because it was too awkward to use and honestly way too complicated. Decided to spend some more time with it before jumping into conclusions and I'm glad i did. Thank you again
It is great you stuck with it - they are awesome once you get over the short learning curve - and you know something - it takes way longer to learn the digital editing programs than it takes to learn how to use the pen correctly ...
how can i make it so when i have the pen touch the pad it doesnt make so it is a click. like if you click a program all you need to do is touch the pad with the pen. i want to turn this off so i can use the buttons like a mouse but instead of just "touching" the pad. the reason why i want to change this is because its really hard as an artist with this thing on cause you could accidentally draw a line by mistake and so on. please help.
nah what i mean is when i touch the pad simply it still clicks on something even with mouse mode on. also i have had it for one day. but still it's sorta hard for me to draw in pen mode even if it defeats the purpose. well it sorta doesnt defeat it by. your still using it as a pen but your just using the buttons to select something. also your not clicking on something by simply touching the pad.
Well you can search out the Language Bar in XP - that is how you do the handwriting thing with that OS. It is a bit of a bother but it seems to work ...
... or upgrade to Vista Premium which will give you a free upgrade to Windows 7 in the next little while.
Microsoft did a lot of work to the handwriting module working on Vista Premium and it does work.
With Vista Premium you also have the Journal which is really quite useful for taking quick notes.
my dog is a Golden Retriever and shes 3 right now but 4 in a few months :) she doesn't retrieve anything you throw for her she just grabs it and lies down on the spot and just ignores you :( but its still cute
Nice tutorial. I didn't think about the key strokes so much before, but now I have the pen and the tablet set up with only key strokes. Increase/decrease brush size for two tablet buttons, as well as deselect and new layer (ctrl+alt+shift+n version).
I feel the space key stroke is more responsive than the default scroll option of the pen button. I have one button for the pop-up menu, but I'm not using it much, so considering something else.
ahh ok sweet. but do you have any idea where to start? im quite intrested in fantacy monsters like lycan and dragons... but i dont have any idea how to start out...
at photoshop the pressure of my bamboo influences the broadness of the brush. How can I adjust it that the pressure influences the strength of the brush?
and.. can you tell me the link of your homepage again? I can't find it.
To adjust the strength (opacity) of the brush you need to turn on Other Dynamics in the Brushes Palette and make sure it is set to Pen Pressure. You are using full Photoshop, right?
It is different for Photoshop Elements.
In Elements you need to put a check mark beside Opacity in the Tablet Options (at the top of the screen) or select a brush from the brush list that changes Opacity with pressure.
do you keep the pen on the tablet and click to make a mark? because i see that people can navigate without clicking, so you must be able to move the pen around in something like photoshop without drawing right?
ACDSee 8 is a photo manager (it is great and I use it all the time) but it is not included with the tablet. You gotta buy it and it is not expensive. If you use a MAC then you have iPhoto.
The Small and Med Bamboo includes Elements 5, Painter Essentials 5 and the NIK Filters - and they are all good.
I have heard that some people set their pen to "mouse mode" for smaller tablets. What exactly does this do? I am planning on getting a tablet this weekend and have to choose between a Bamboo Fun medium or an Intuos3 4 x 6. I am leaning towards the larger medium because everyone says to get a larger tablet. I plan on using it to do drawing/painting. Which of the two would you recommend?
I have no idea why anyone would use Mouse Mode. It seems to defeat the purpose, doesn't it. I have never put a tablet in this mode in 8 years.
With the Bamboo Medium you are trading size for precision. While the Bamboo is larger the Intuos 4X6 is more precise (twice the levels of pressure and twice the resolution or DPI).
Hi there, i got a Wacom Bamboo today and i was watching your video but on my pen it doesnt have a eraser and i cant find the pop-up menu for my buttons...Which tablet are you showing on this video?? I have just got the normal black wacom bamboo with the blue LED lights, any help at all is very much appreciated x
what do i need to do in control panel, because ive looked in both...i cant find the pop-up menu icon...which is weird? Thanks for your reply btw and nice tutorials keeps it up !
Have you installed the drivers for the Bamboo? None of this will work if the drivers are not installed.
After the drivers are installed there is an icon in there called pen tablet. Open it and drop down either the top or bottom side switch and you will see Pop Up Menu there.
thanks for showing this video, i think im getting a bamboo fun for christmas... can't wait! they look really fun... do you think the small version will work well on a 22" widescreen?
thanks very much for your quick response! i was wondering if you had an instant messenger screen name so i could chat more with you about graphic tablets? i had some more questions and you seem very knowledgable in this area, thanks!
I was wondering whether to buy this for a 12-year-old learning to write websites using Notepad. Sounds just the thing. Thanks for your demonstration. I'd like one also; might buy two.
The tablets are great for kids as it really gets the creative juices flowing. Heck - they are great for adults too - gets their creative juices flowing as well!
I am not sure what you mean by "write websites". There is a handwriting module and Journal in Vista Premium and above. The HR module will do handwriting recognition but I have never found it to be that great really.
Hi Rich, thanks for reply. "write websites": you know, you use a web editor (eg Dreamweaver) or a text editor (eg Notepad) and write your sites using HTML & CSS. I was thinking you can put your tablet-made drawings as images in your websites.
Bamboo Fun includes the tablet, pen, pen holder,Software (Adobe Elements 5, Painter Essentials 3 and Nik Filters) and the Driver CD. It also comes in 4 colors and 2 sizes.
The Bamboo only includes the tablet, pen, pen holder and Driver CD. It is black and the small version. In addition the pen does not have the pressure sensitive eraser but the pen tip is the same as the Bamboo Fun.
Does that help?
If you own the graphics software then the Bamboo is an inexpensive choice.
I cant open it... Dosnt work to open.

You set one of the pen buttons to be a right click or set one of the Express keys to be a right click.
There are different options and that is set up in the Wacom tablet properties.

You can go into the control Panel or System Prefs and change the pen to mouse mode - that may do what you want.
It does seem to defeat the reason for having a pen and tablet though. They act just like pen and paper.
Check out some of the speed drawings of sycra on YouTube. He uses an Intuos3 tablet and the tablet is working in full pen mode.
How long have you been using the pen, by the way?

Is it possible to use Bamboo Fun Tablet for writing on Word 2003 documents?
By the way, the company should hire you to do instructional videos. Very nice and helpful indeed!!

It is and it will depend on the Operating System you are using.
If XP the handwriting thing is a real bear to find and use. If you are using Vista Premium or higher then there should be no problem.

The Properties are named Pen Tablet in the Control Panel. You just double click on it.
If you do not have a Pen Tablet icon then you have not installed the drivers for the tablet.
None of the cool things on your tablet will work if the drivers are not installed.

Hi again!
Had another question about tablets in general,
to draw,
do you keep the pen on the tablet and click to make a mark? because i see that people can navigate without clicking, so you must be able to move the pen around in something like photoshop without drawing right?
sharkhead7854 3 years ago
Absolutely true. You move from place to place by lifting the pen off of the tablet (about 1/4" for the Bamboo and 1/2" for the Intuos).
You only place the pen on the tablet when you want to do something - paint, draw or click.
Does that help?

The opposite end of the pen from the tip is the eraser. It works best in Corel Painter Essentials.
