I think it has a large appeal to gays because of the loss. The real women were tossed aside in part because they didn't follow the rules of being an obedient wife and would be wife and stop perusing their passions. Gay people feel like they could lose it all (family, friends, support) if they don't conform as well. These women lost it all, and being at the top of American society at the time; they had plenty to lose.

The reason is exactly that disenfranchised and the lack of appreciation of a gem an undervalued person is why. Gays too are undervalued and yet they have so much to offer yet are heged in the grey garden of homophobia in a heterosexist world.

I am a 20 year old straight male and I really love this documentary. In fact averywhere I turn, my favortie things are being catagorized as Gay - Mommie Dearest, Shirley Bassey, Broadway in general....It upsets me. No offense to the gay community because I have no hate. Please gay community, just because you like it, do not catagorize it as YOURS and others do the same.

God bless Christine Ebersole for her insights and her magical performances in "Grey Gardens." I could not stop crying through the whole show when I went to NY to see it. I felt like I was almost certainly watching the most brilliant performance I would ever see in my lifetime. Thank you Christine for understanding us gay guys and for doing so much to help others "get it" as well.

Well , First of all it is an interview , so the plot doesn't really exist and nor does it have to . The Overall meaning to it is basically what the author told you, Christine Ebersole being interviewed on a subject.

you should watch the documentary first...it's called Grey Gardens as well. there is a supplement(part 2) called The Beales of Grey Gardens. watch the original first. the gist is....2 high society women from the early/mid 20th century lose their place in life in fall through the cracks. yet, they still maintain their eccentricities, their values and their attitudes...in a very interesting way.
