Prime laminated counter top before painting

You make this look quick and easy. We have cheapo (ie, rental house) countertops that need some attention. They look like they are made of some kind of particle material with plastic laminated on it--is that the type of counter you are talking about painting? If so, I want to try this. Thanks!
