  • Ahh, the glory days!

  • Jacques last NHL game, and his last goal. He led the playoffs in goals and retired a Stanley cup champ. What a way to go.

  • Lemaire, Dryden retired after this game, Cournoyer as well ( although he was injured thru most of the season) . Big holes to fill there, The dynasty was over.

  • shoots he scores, more like backhander he scores!

  • Congratulations on coaching win #600 tonight Jaques!

  • Had a wicked slap shot too....saw him score on Tony O twice at the forum from the blue line...top corner and bottom corner. First one set up the second...Tony o was looking high again and JL put it along the ice. Sweet.

  • Classic Lemaire....

  • Davidson may as well just get out of the way and give Lemaire an easy empty net to shoot at.

  • To think...this is Lemaire's last ever goal. His second of the game. This is also The Roadrunner and Ken Dryden last game, too. Scotty Bowman also left Montreal after this game!

  • i was fortunate to be in attendance at madison square garden for game 4 of this series. savard scored in overtime to put the habs up three games to one. given that new york city is a major media market, i'm puzzled by the fact that there's virtualy no footage for the '79 cup finals. if anyone knows of any clips of game 4, please advise. thanks!

  • You make an excellent point, I think I've seen fewer clips on videotape, ESPN and youtube of the 1979 Finals than just about any other finals since 1976. I've seen more clips of the Rangers semi-final win over the Islanders.

  • give it up Rangers for crissakes....

  • JD was infamous for being out of position. He was an average goalie at best. But he played incredibly well during the Playoff run v. Isles and Flyers. But the Habs were an elite team at that time and noone could've beat them. Arguably the best ever.

  • J.D. with the diving effort.

    But, also with the screw-up.

  • Jacque Lemaire was one of the greatest centers in NHL history. He flew under the radar on what was essentially an all-star team. The mid to late 70's Canadiens were SCARY GOOD! Poor Jacque Lemaire just didn't get the attention he deserved with so many GREAT players on one team. Number 25 was my favorite. He had at least five more quality seasons left in him when he retired after winning the 1979 Stanley Cup.

  • Ya and its too bad he became an absolute cocksucker as a coach. Cutting Lafleurs icetime was one of the unclassiest thing ever done in Montreal. And it was for no reason, total power trip on Lemaires part. He backed it up by sayin Lafleurs production dropped. Meanwhile Guy hadnt seen a PP in 3 weeks. Lafleur is MY favorite player and he "carried" Lemaire many a night. Fuck Lemaire.

  • Take it down a notch. Lafleur got all the glory and Lemaire did most of the hard work. Lemaire"s reputation and stats speak for themselves. Better play-off stats than Guy. Did Guy coach any Stanley Cup winning teams? Jacques Lemaire did. Hey, I love Lafleur, too. I love The Habs. Guy was getting old, that's why he didn't play as much while Jacques was coaching him. How many of Guy's goals did Lemaire assist on? Hundreds? Give #25 a break. Appreciate what he did for your boy, #10. GO HABS!

  • WelI I guess the whole planet has missed it then. Why isnt Lemaires number retired? Why is Guy (next to the Rocket) Montreals #1 son? Lafleur wasnt "old" when Lemaire coached and he definitely could hold his own on the PP. Lemaire is an egomaniac,he was when he played and he still is..Everyone and there mother knows this. Trust me, Lemaire was good, but he was no Lafleur. I have NEVER ONCE heard a standing O for Jacques, never! And Im a diehard.

  • Dude, you've got no ammo in this fight. Lemaire's reputation and career speaks for itself. 3 play-off OT goals, 2 of them Cup winners. The video above shows the Hab fans standing & cheering. Jacques was a workhorse, a brilliant defensive center and backchecker. He 's been refered to as Guy Lafleur's "defensive conscience" Check his coaching stats and awards. Look for him in the NHL Hall of Fame. He's there. His #25 certainly should be retired and you know it. He was a great, yet unsung player.

  • I have no ammo???? Look at the stats. Overall points,1.5 pts per game in the playoffs, 3 of those Cups in the 70's were won because of Lafleurs "clutch"goals that came very, very late in games. There was a reason EVERY team feared this guy hey, he simply scored when he had too.Ill say it again, Lemaire was good but he was no Lafleur. And they are standing and cheering cuz he just scored.Lafleurs defensive conscience? I thought that was Gainey,Jarvis,Risebrough and sometimes Napier LOL

  • Look, Lafleur was one one the greatest ever. On anyone's list he'd finish far ahead of Jacques Lemaire. When you took exception to my original comment, you hated on him, called him vulgar names. I was just standing up for my favorite player. Wouldn't you have done the same for Guy? It's hard for me to believe you or any Habs fans could hate Jacques Lemaire. Look how much he helped them win. Count the Cups. He was a workhorse. Let's concentrate on what really matters. Hating the Boston Bruins!

  • Fair enough! But ill never forgive Lemaire for his power trip while coaching Lafleur. Its very comparable to the way I feel the abt Tremblay and what he did to Roy.

(save the fact that Tremblay did in 60 mins what Jacques did over the course of 35 games.) Ill agree with ya on one thing tho..Fuck the Bruins

  • I remember Espo begging Shero to move the Rangers out of Montreal after winning game 1 at the Forum in order to focus on winning but the Fog wanted to be in the spotlight and getting hammered...

  • I'm a loyal true blue seat Rangers fan but fuck man Davidson was so far out of position he could have ordered popcorn and a soda...

  • I understand Davidson coming out to try and cut down the angle; but I think he came out too soon. The problem really started with the Rangers getting sloppy and careless with the puck. Having Lemaire alone swooping down on you has to be a goalie's worst nightmare. Davidson was probably screwed no matter what he did.

  • Go Canucks!!

  • Just not the same without Danny Gallivan

  • I don't know why Dan Kelly was doing this game instead of Gallivan. If Gallivan was the greatest hockey announcer ever (I think so) then Kelly was a close second. Unlike today's big-mouthed hacks, Gallivan and Kelly could convey the excitement of the game without going bonkers.

  • I think Danny was off due to his own illness or for someone in the family.

  • I wondered that myself...I wathd the game for sure but dont remember kelly calling it...had to be some extraordinary reason for Gallivan not to be calling the game....Kelly was a great one too however...and I agree todays announcers are beyond banal...either they sound like a WWF wrestling commentator or they sound like theyre calling curling

  • I would love to have seen the Islanders and Canadiens in the finals that year. Canadiens in 6 I say. These would have been the scores in my humble opinion:

islanders with home ice, given they had 116 pts and the Canadiens 115.

    G1: Canadiens 4 at Islanders 1

    G2: Canadiens 2 at Islanders 4

    G3: Islanders 2 at Canadiens 5

    G4: Islanders 3 at Canadiens 2 OT

    G5: Canadiens 4 at Islanders 3 OT

    G6: Islanders 2 at Canadiens 4

  • ULTRAPOWERCanadiens, very good analysis of what could have been a great series between the Habs and Islanders.

  • Would have been a series for the ages to be sure...

  • My hockey fantasy would be the 76-79 Canadiens vs. the 80-83 Islanders. I believe the series would go seven games, and I'd have the Habs as slight favorites, but, being a New Yorker, that is a series I'd love to see. Also, Idhorricks, you must be Canadian with that Curling reference. That is the strangest sport.

  • I always think of Curling being to Canada what Bowling is to America...and yes I am Canadian but living in Prague, Czech Republic for 16 years now...that being said, Minnesota and the Dakotas are Curling hotbeds and the US always ices a competitive team at the Worlds.

  • @ldhorricks Both teams would have beaten Edmonton because of the goalies. Ken Dryden and Billy Smith were probably best money goalies ever.

  • @eaglesyz Smith was there in '84, but the Oilers still won!

  • I was there section 65 row A seat 4

  • A pretty amazing guy !

  • God, the Habs owned the Rangers that year..... too bad the Rangers got to the final --- they were no match. The Canucks would have had a better chance..:)

  • The Final was the semi's

    B's and Habs

  • @bashibabat and it sucks that with todays playoff format we'll never see a Bruins Habs final

  • Comment removed

  • as a life long habs fan, i must admit that they must have been pleased when rangers upset the isles in semi finals that year. i was fortunate to be in attendance at game four of the finals at madison sq. garden. go habs go!

  • "i was fortunate to be in attendance at game four of the finals at madison sq. garden. go habs go!"

Hey, more power to ya! That means you saw Serge Savard send the Ranger faithful home in despair when he scored in OT.

I've seen footage of that goal on occasion and I still find it amusing to see silhouettes of the Ranger fans leaving with their heads bowed.

  • while i was in attendance at game four, i'm yet to see footage of it. are you aware of any possible sources for game four on dvd? any suggestions you can make are very much appreciated. thanks, and rock on.

  • its out there for sure...I had it but had about 40 DVDs stolen including all of the habs finals from 76-79...keep looking its out there.

  • thanks for replying, and sorry to hear of the theft you suffered. i'm clueless as to where to start my search, do you have any suggestions of reputable sources in canada or the states? thanks, again!

  • danny gallivan was the best ever but I think dan kelly was 1-a to dannys 1

  • Im from St. Louis and I think sportsanouncer Dan Kelly ( the man heard here) was the best in hockey of all time.

  • Absolutely i use to listen the Blues on KMOX with Dan Kelly and Gus Kyle and they were the best at calling a hockey game over the radio.

  • Rod Phillips calling the Oilers in their glory days (he still does but has lost a bit) was magic, too. There is a reason he is in the HoF

  • Danny Gallivan was the best ever. Dan Kelly was excellent as well.

  • lemaire needs to lace up and take gaboriks place next time we make the playoffs,

  • i dont even like montreal i just like lemaire cause hes the wild head coach dude dont spaz out

  • I was there that night, sitting in the blue seats. Tickets were.....ahem, $12. Still get chills when I watch that game. Go habs go

  • ...such fantastic memories...especially with Dan Kelly on the call.

  • awesome

  • Kool! Thanks for posting this. Brings back memories
