  • sounds like the intro to jason bittner solo

  • my favourite fill, Neil is God, awesome video

  • I grew up worshiping Neil Peart. I don't worship him anymore but I have the highest regard for him as a drummer. And now, in this age where we can see the musicians "come to life" on Youtube and get interviews and words of wisdom that we would have died for in the 70's and 80's gives us a glimpse into the man that Neil Peart is. He is a very interesting man who has led a very interesting life and the way he bounces back from the cards he has been dealt and keeps going says volumes about the man.

  • Good grief... who gives a shit who wrote it first... this is Neil sourcing HIS influences... not his influences, influences... LUKE! I AM YOUR FATHERS, UNCLES GREAT AUNTS, SISTERS, TWIN COUSIN!

  • It doesn't matter who did it first. It has become a part of the lexicon of drumming and everyone interprets it in their own way. Although I still think Gadd does it best.

  • Damn,he keeps his snare raised high.

  • same top comments? gotta change this, BOOBIES!

  • Lol I know ppl will laugh at me but can some1 confirm. It's snare, rack, floor, kick right. Four notes with equal spacing? Why does it sound kinda like a triplet? Pls have mercy on me utube commenters

  • @gavinggunholdlive It's a triplet. 1-2-3-1. So there are 4 notes

  • Moby Dick anyone?

  • @SilentMott

    Total Bonzo fill

  • @ZeppelinRules Yes Bonham played this fill and completely "owned" it, but it actually goes back to way before Zeppelin. This was a pretty common jazz/big band fill back in the day and is still used to this day. One example, and the place I got it, is from Sonny Payne. On the Count Basie album "Atomic Basie" he plays that fill. That album came out in 1957 and I'm sure that wasn't even the first time that particular fill was used. If you get a sec, check out that album. It has taught me SO much.

  • @SilentMott bonzo!

  • MASTER OF MASTER.... no abra otro mejor que Neil!!

  • Comment removed

  • @lileulileu there is no god only neil peart

  • Hear that fill in malignat narcissism

  • why the hell was that lick slowed down? its a steve gadd lick for cryin out loud. not like its THAT hard to figure out. if you cant figure out the lick in real time, then you shouldnt be playing drums. simple shit.

  • @soundmind529 lol i know right, but w.e there are noobs

  • @therevengeofficial even if someone just started playing drums, it doesnt need to be slowed down. come on is it really THAT hard? im self taught and i can figure it out. i guess everyone learns differently.

  • I feel like I'm on crazy pills here. OF COURSE John Bonham Plays it, OF COURSE Steve Gadd plays it - every goddamn rock drummer in the world plays that fill!

ITS AN INSTRUCTIONAL DRUM DVD. Not the magic mega drum portal. Geez.

  • I feel sorry for Neil. All this God worship rubbish. He is a hard working drummer who has been lucky enough to find success in Rush. No Rush then no Neil Peart. How many other hugely successful drummers do not sit in with other musicians? He has done the Buddy Rich Band thing but to me that it is like watching a programmed robot. At Rush he is the best but at the rest he works hard to get there but never quite does. I could never play as well as he does but his is acquired, not a natural gift.

  • @Mafiawl I agree with you. Yes, Neil is a great drummer. He's been a HUGE influence to me for decades. When I was younger, I was a bit more impressionable. NOW, I realize all the things that bedazzled me then (and still make me grin) really isn't EXTREMELY difficult. I've been playing for about 35 years now, and I've listened to HUNDREDS of drummers. From Latin, to jazz, to metal, to funk, and everything in between. You're absolutely correct about him playing Rush. He's obviously the best at it

  • @MrISatai Exactly right.

  • john bonham does this alot too

  • Nice drums man

  • funny it looks and sounds like Kevin Spacey playing drums

  • the first one i heard do this was max roach!!

then gadd and tony and bonham now everybody does it!

  • Funny how the simple things kick so much ass!

  • who the fuck cares who made it up the only thing that matters is that someone did make up. shit in that case about every single drummer on earth has stole something from tony williams lol

  • Come on you guys, get real, Bonham was doing this when Steve Gadd was in High school, doing this with jazz bands.

Triplets and Four Stroke Rolls, and only on 3-4 drums, was also being played by Philly Joe Jones, and Elvin Jones...before Bonham!

As all great drummers know...those who are switched on, are switched on, OK?

End of story...the Great Akashic Record rolls on, and anyone can tune in.

  • @JudgeBluey no shit, i love neil but thats right outta moby dick.

  • no guys i think NEEL PURT stole the idea of playing drums from the guy who invented playing the drums. derp.

incase text doesn't convey the message, the above was sarcasm XD

  • and Neil 'stole' the hats from Santana :D

  • I was waiting for Eddie Van Halen to go into "Eruption"!

  • @PiHDrummer And gadd stole it from buddy rich lol But you know what they say, the best musicians steal

  • Moby Dick is full of these fills. Just sayin'.

  • JUST LIKE JOHN FUCKING BONHAM.

  • We're not worthy!

  • need slow motion x2 !!!

  • If you look back in time, everything has its own roots, which in turn have other anterior roots. Neil is only admitting that he heard the fill played by Steve Gadd and decided to include among its resources.

And as said in another comment, if the great drummers read things like this, probably would cause much laughter. The only ones that need to be comparing great artists are those who are not busy enough in their own activities.

  • people have to stop comparing drummers that are all on the top shelf. When someone plays the drums well for 30 years and still learns things from others it just shows how complicated the instrument truly is. If Bonham, Peart, Kruppa, Famularo, Gadd, Rich, Weckl, Steve Smith, etc. all got together they would laugh over a cherry coke and show each other things. Grow up, sometimes you're dad isn't better than my dad.

  • @walterwalter66 - i couldnt agree more

    i enjoyed watching this

  • @PiHDrummer

It's not a Gadd fill it's a Roach fill... Max Roach... Listen to Rich vs. Roach which was recorded long before anybody heard of Bonham and Gadd.

But is it really a Roach fill? Did Max invent it? No he stood on the shoulders of the giants before him too (and so on and so on...)

  • What is the finish of his drums

  • @DaCrazyOne300 Red Sparkle

  • @MYNAMETAYLA thanks dude

  • @DaCrazyOne300 Not a problem, man.

  • the slo-mo crap is sort of annoying actually

  • there were lots of drummers doing that same fill when bonham became famous doing it like don brewer and steve gadd and jazz drummers from way back. who gives a shit?

  • those triplets sound like john bonham's drumming in his solos

  • its just triplets.....no ones own fill.....just triplets.

  • It sounds like the intro in eruption

  • @mairava1996 yeah , it does, lol. alex liked ginger baker of cream

  • seriously. i love all these comments telling Neil he is wrong. omg tell that shit to his face. he is so much better than all of you, Bonham, and Gadd. STFU I THINK NEIL KNOWS WHAT HE IS FUCKING TALKING ABOUT.

  • @prankcallz444 hahahaha... sorry, but did you say that Neil Peart is better than Steve Gadd? lol that's a good one...

  • @HippieDrummer06 so was that comment.

  • @prankcallz444 lmfao yea id like to see Neil Peart keep up w Chick Corea... LOL. btw Pearts one of the best rock drummers, but when it comes to any other style he can't keep up w Gadd... not even close

  • @PiHDrummer its not a gadd fill even its just a tripplet thats been played different ways by different drummers

  • @PiHDrummer Nope, Gadd definitely stole that from Bonham and Bonham was making waves around the time Gadd was getting out of the Army and storming the NY session scene. One caveat, Gadd owns that fill now and can play it inside and out. That's what made it a Gadd fill. Gadd also has a series of triplet fills that he stole from Elvin. No shame. Gadd takes ownership of all the stuff he stole. He made it better. Like BASF.

  • This is an easy lick to play. Sometimes I bring the hand I use on the mounted tom down to the floor tom just before the bass hits as an added note. Other times I do a double on the kick instead of a single. Takes time to build it up to keep it going consecutively but sounds really full if you master it. Smith does use it in Separate Ways. It sounds almost like he's using singles on both bass drums as a quintuplet instead of quadruplets, although I think it's just quadruplets like Neil's doing.

  • I just love how they nned to slow that down for you to "see" it... wow! If you want see some serious "rock" style drumming? check out Virgil Donati or Mike Mangini...the list goes on sad to say... sorry neil... you're the best drummer ever! that's if you have no clue about drumming however...

  • this i neither a Gadd or Bonham lick (and they would be the first to admit it) they were both influenced by the jazz greats (as mentioned in some interviews)

And this lick was used extensively by the legendary jazz drummer Max Roach back in the 50's.

Do a search on youtube and you can hear Max using this lick alot in his solos.

  • kevin spacey knows how to play drums?

  • Ha ha - I never noticed that before - You're right!!!

  • It's not Spacey, it's Tom Hanks!

  • steve smith used that fill in seperate ways journey

  • wtf??? does bonzo own triplets???

  • JOHN BONHAM WAS THE FIRST TO PLAY THIS!

  • yeah totally, both gadd and then peart are total goons !

  • This dude is right man!!! (He was the first to introduce it in rock music)

  • C'mon niel it was bonzos signature move!

  • So average...yawn

  • WOW, I love Neil, but he looks like Kevin Spacey in this video. LOL.

  • 0:20 Malignant Narcissism drum break anyone?

  • hes not playing bonzo's triplets idiot, and if you were a real bonzo fan you would be able to hear the difference. he is showing something that he sad steve gadd do, even though bonhams triplets are similar, they are not the same.

  • no those are bonzo trips at :59 it shows the slow motions and thats the EXACT same pattern as bonzo trips

  • lik

  • your a fucking retard

  • NEIL IS GOD

  • yes he is.

    he is my hero

  • He's only playing something stolen from Gadd....

  • All music is influence, and then added on to. Neil didn't steal anything.

  • You can`t even spell literally you moron and your knowledge of who is the best drummer alive is worse than your spelling. Bored loser mfker just like the ones who just trash any video they come across because this is probably all you have.

  • Nobody cares about your opinion. We don`t watch vids to read your comments.

  • Max Roach invented the fill and Steve sped it up. You know nothing about drum history dude. You could take this one idea and extend 10 other phrases from it. Elvin Jones said so, so its a fact. :)

  • How does my comment imply that I know nothing about drum history?? All I'm saying is that the idea is played to death. If this were some random kid demonstrating this lick he would get clowned to death.Calm the fuck down people.

  • sensitivedude is too sensitive. Um, any idea is valid if it works in a musical context. You seem to be saying the idea is over used, but so are many licks of top pop songs- however they just work. Just take a sleeping pill and everything will be fine again. :)

  • no your wrong.

  • NO YOU!

  • NEIL IS GOD.

  • Gadd did not come before Bonham, at least he wasn't popular before Bonham, I'm sure he was playing around that time. Bonham definitely made the rolling triplet between drums his thing and extremely popular, but it was around before that, Elvin Jones used it more than a few times on his solo records and with Coltrane in the early 60's... now everyone uses them to some extent. I think Peart refers to this being a Gadd fill in reference to the timing, how the triplets are put together.

  • you are my hero for sayin that!

  • none of neils primary influences was john bonham so thats where it came from

    DONE

  • well before id heard even of gadd i was playing this. i didn't listen to rush or led zep back then. its not liker its a difficult thing to figure out. it sounds cool and its pretty basic to say it sounds so good. so it could be that bonham and gadd came up them separatly , on their own, and then heard it in each others music

  • Steve Gadd was earlier than Bonham?

John Bonham was recording and touring heavily in '69, while Gadd at the same time was in the Army and had no major records or tours under his belt. Gadd didn't move to NYC (when his real career began) until 1972, and even then he didn't hit his stride in popularity and influence until around '77 (think Aja, Chick Corea). Bonham was IMO already on the decline by '77.

However, you are right on the "stealing" point. Every artist "steals" ideas from one another!

  • this is lick is way cooler when you play it backwards

  • If he stole that from Gadd, Gadd stole that from Bonham. You can hear that in a lot of Zepp songs...Stairway is one example,

  • also in the solo at the end of rock and roll

  • @orangequartermusic Nobody stole it from anybody. Music can't be stolen, it's a free ocean of expression and soul. When music becomes a commodity to be bought and sold, or claimed and stolen, it's not music anymore.

  • @orangequartermusic and Bonham stole it from Elvin... Obviously this "stealing" a fill pattern isn't an incriminating thing, it's how the art of playing evolves.

  • @orangequartermusic gadd didnt steal this fill from bonham becose those are not the same fils they sound simmular but sticking is diffrent

  • @orangequartermusic

zepplin stole stairway to heaven lol xD

  • @orangequartermusic dude that is steve gadds fill. yes peart used it which is fine. he doesnt it use it all the time and likes his fill so put it in one his fills. but ur crazy for thinking that gadd stole it from bonham. do some research sir. yes bonham has some fills that sound kind of like one of gadds fill barley. do your research.

  • He's better than you so shut the fuck up !!!!

  • He's an amazing drummer, but unfortunately for all of us, not the greatest teacher. If you watch any of Paul Gilbert's lesson videos, You see very quickly that he is an Extraordinary teacher. He just Oozes Learning. Neil's not much of a teacher, in comparison. If he could teach like paul gilbert, the world would be overrun with Excellent drummers.

  • he looks like he's super-imposed onto that curtain behind him

  • what song was he talking about before the video started?

  • BONHAM FILLS bitches

  • Even slowed down I don't understand what he's doing.

  • Snare, mounted tom, floor tom, bass. It's a basic drum lick that Bonham used to death and Steve Smith used it a lot with Journey as well. You can also double up on the single kick or use a double kick like a quadruplet feel in 5/4 time using singles on the feet within the pattern for extra fluff.

It's really extremely basic but sounds sweet.

It would be easier to show than to explain.

  • is this like the bonham triplets thingy?

  • It's not a triplet. More like a quadruplet....

snare, tom, floor tom, bass. Extremely easy to do.

Go watch Journey's Separate Ways. Steve Smith does it with I believe a double stroke or single stroke/double bass better than most in the middle of the song. His continuity is awesome. Bonham does it a lot in his Moby Dick solo as well, but not so much as a continuity but a break as "blocky" patterns. He does also do many triplets as well all over the kit, which are easy as well.

  • cool thanks, gonna go try it out now

  • I do it, snare, tom, bass, floor tom. Works, but i might try it the way you stated.

  • Of course you don't your only a mortal.....

  • hes like "yeah something i saw steve gadd do..." *zoooooom bing bammmmmmmmmmmmm insert awesome drum fill here* "was that and i thought that was pretty cool!"

ok... haha i guess you make it look pretty easy then neil, thanks once again for making me feel sorry for my drumming skills.

  • awesome

  • john dosent even roll on the high tom he hits it to fast that it is straight snare tom tom bass no rolls neil rolls and when i watched john he does not or mutiple bounce roll on high tom

  • yea and he got this from steve gadd look up king of drummers it has steve gadd vinnie coluita and dave weckl this shows neil up

  • Creativity in action!!!

  • personally he is a genius and super intellectual and intelligent drum soloist and rock drummer

  • personally i'd call that a bonham fill...

  • hmm... actually that does kinda sound like bonham, like in moby dick? but also i kinda think bonham fills are more like snaresnarekick tomtomkick tomtomkick tomtomkick, you know?

  • I see where you're coming from. But that's a little too techinical I think. I just believe the whole sound and concept of that fill belongs to Bonham, and this "Gadd fill" is simple derived from the great man himself.

  • yeah. but zep's first album came out in 1969, and hasn't gadd been big since like 1970? that's just a guess, i'm not really sure, i do know however that chick corea recruited him in 1973 to record hymn of the seventh galaxy (although they recorded it again w/ lenny white when gadd said he couldn't tour) so i know he's been playing since at least 73. so they're kind of within the same time frame? regardless they're both kickass drummers, and this fill is pretty cool.

  • neil pert is the best

  • Neil Kicks ass!!
