The title of the song is based on a method of teaching public speaking in the days before amplification and public address systems. Speakers were taught gestures which would help the audience understand what they couldn't hear clearly. I have a texbook from the 1880s called "How To Gesture" which defines the movements.

@mrrk The CD credits it to Marie Lloyd. As far as I know there isn't a recording of it by Marie Lloyd Jnr. That doesn't mean that there isn't though.

Marie Lloyd was born at the Right Time!! She gave the public, Entertainment that was MUCH NEEDED. She crossed boundaries, and didn't care!! She knew what Entertaining Meant.. Much to the Horror of the "Upper Class" & "Good Christians."
