Artist Brian Bolland did a brilliant comic adaptation of this song in an issue of HEAVY METAL magazine. One of the Eyeball guys in top hat and tails makes an appearance also.
In fact, The Residents put out a "freakshow" comic in 1992, published by Dark Horse. Some great people worked in it, big names like Kyle Baker and Dave McKean, each fleshing out a song from the CD and turning it into a 10-ish pages story. Bolland's take on Harry the Head is also included, and curiously enough it had different dialogue/captions than those it had in Heavy Metal.
This video is on the Freakshow DVD that comes with the album. basically it involves Timmy going to a freakshow and meeting the characters in the residents songs.
I like how the Residents scar the mind of self righteous wingers like dazamaru to the point were they have to keep coming back to these videos to keep us outrageously insane Residents fans in line. Art at its finest...
You want to loose the feel of the video? if you remake it, it wouldn't be cool anymore. Because of it's ghetto-ness it's a piece of art. :)
And Dazamaru guy, they're not a pop band (well perhaps they are seen like that now) but they are an avant-garde music band. Which means they do expirimental rock combined with art, Andy Warhol kinda art.
I completely understand what you say, I would have said the same probably under different circumstances. But sometimes I wonder, up to which degree this video is good because it really is, or because its fans feel "special" by defining "good" something which barely is and that most people barely know? I don't know if there is an answer to this, but it makes me wonder.
What I mean is that a remake of this video would probably be good, but only if done by Residents themselves. Back then technology was limited, and I'm pretty sure it bound severly the things Residents wanted to do with this video. Were they to remake it today, they could probably do what they really wanted to do back then.
Yeah I see what you mean, and yes, if they'd are to remake it themselves it would probably be as good maybe even better.
And I don't think it's good because of "it barely is good" or because a minority knows about them. I like them because they are geniousess.. :P And so is Gong, you should check them out some time if you like this.
The ending of this where it shows the freaks in the "house"...Les Claypool totally took that for the menu in the Primus DVD Animals Should Not Try To Act Like People..not that that's a bad thing or anything, I just noticed :D
You mean you do like men? Big men with big balls? Big balls, heavy with seed? Big, hairy balls trapped in tight swimming trunks sticky with love cement? I see.
Great stuff. This song is so catchy it sounds as if it could have been a hit single. But with the key chorus lyric being "the head is dead," I guess it never really stood a chance.
The shortest three minutes I've ever experienced on You Tube. Awesome... Thanks to the late Jim Ludtke (how talented) and Homer and the boys (very talented too).
if someone could post more videos of the freak show i would love it, i played the game constently through as a child, if anyone has "micky the mubbling midget" or "herman the mole man" videos i would love to see them again. "mickey the mubbleing midget is 10 years old today, Mickey the mubbleing midget, just ran away"
Residents Hardy, Jay, Homer and John went to school in North Louisiana during Viet Nam and moved to S.F. in the Hippie days. Their main influence was Sun Ra, Cpt. Beefheart and Zappa. They started sending out dozens of demo tapes. Most where sent back with the postal refrain, Return TO RESIDENTS, 18 Sycamore St. (Real Address). Guess enough time has passed to let some air out of the myth. They're in their mid-60's now! Always in disquise, they can hire anyone to play.
Thank god I've found this again :) I first was this video way back in 1991 on an Apple Mac Quicktime demo (when QT was first introduced) but it was a matchbox-sized video and hard to see anything. The music has haunted me ever since, but I didn't know it was by the residents. Finally I can find out more...
As the EYES would have you know each and every fellow here were once happily or unhappily moving through the vietnamese jungle when the group found an abandoned radio station and quickly found themselves tinkering with all the toys. By the mid 70's they were back stateside and started the band. Not knowing what to call the band they simply signed an envelope with a return address as The Residents when they sent in a demo tape to their still current record label.
noceur, where d'ya get info re vietnam man? 25 years ago me and mates had an idea they were 'The Banana Splits' reborn, very thin links to credits on the BS show.
I was at an after show party in Vancouver during the icky flix tour and I asked about their time in vietnam. One of the eyes replied "as legend has it three of us are vets who found our love for playing music in an abandoned radio station while overseas." Other members may have been in other projects and other people may have been simply "like" these masters of the perverse. Your guess is as good as any but I heard what i heard truth or not its what I heard from an eye personally.

Dazamaru...do you deliberately canvas Resident music videos in order to make snide, insulting remarks about them?
Why bother searching the Residents if you don't even like them...?

syiah...
im just responding to the angry Resident fans who e-mail me. they have the same snide, insulting comments you complain about.
it's funny to me. i dont stress it.
you dont like the game, dont play along then.
i do what i choose, until you pay my connection fees.
dazamaru 4 years ago
its good you don't stress it, because you KNOW i'm right. and i'm not paying you shit
fantasticfink 4 years ago
right, wrong, who gives a fugg.
you aint winning no prize here, so why you even bother stressing?
I remain convinced this band is still a pop band.
a rather crappy one at that.
dazamaru 4 years ago
"pop music" is an abbreviation for popular music. i don't hear the residents much on the radio, do you?
fantasticfink 4 years ago
"pop music" connotates a simplistic musical traits. usually ABA or AABA forms. or danceable beats in 4/4 time or repeating musical structures.
that describes the entire Residents catalog.
the reason you dont hear this on the radio is....
well...ahhh..
it's crap.
