MMbadgerboy, without any friction other than against air itself, it loses energy at an incredibly slow rate... with enough spin and the finely tuned measurments, it could take hours or even days to stop. Hypothetically, in a vacuum it would never stop.

Not sure, this is the only one I tried. I know it took me a full day of trying before i got it.. as you know, it's not easy!

Keep trying different weight combinations and adjusting the legs on the bottom.

The top will eventually stop spiing and fall down and be attracted to the base. There is an electromagnetic base you can buy that will keep the thing in the air for way longer.. but thats no fun..

Well, if it wasn't spinning, the magnetic fields would cause that magnet to turn upside-down. If the magnet goes upside-down, then it'll attract rather than repel. Spinning helps it to keep stable, upward position.

It's all trial and error. It took me several hours to get it to levitate. First you have to get it to levitate for a few seconds, if it keeps flying off in one direction then you must adjust the leg on the bottom so it sits a little higher in the direction it want to take off in. It's not easy.. but cool when you do get it right... good luck bud!

Also, if you have tried everything and you still cant get it to work.. try taking it to a different table, I find it works well on an all wood surface.

Why doesn't the "field" break or get disturbed when you put your hand between the magnets? And does the top piece stop spinning after a period of time or will it continue to spin indefinitely? Fascinating! Thanks for the post.

Hi..

The magnetic field does not get disturbed when you pass your hand under it because it actually goes through your hand. If it did disturb it, tht would be very interesting as many people are now in the hunt for the perfect magnetic shielding material.. the top does eventually stop spinning, you can purchase a device that you put under it that will keep it going for a very long time.. but it involves electromagnatism.

Yeah, the bottom (base) has a ring magnet inside and the spinner also has a small disc magnet on it. The spinner also comes with various sized disc's to adjust it's weight.

The base has adjustable legs on it, which also have to be adjusted just right for this to work.
