  • I wish people would just enjoy this show without putting down others. That's so unnecessary.

  • This is what Musical Theatre is all about.

  • 2 people think love is real...

  • I've said it before and I'll say it again....this should still be running...........

  • TLIP may have lost the Tony for Best Musical, but at least Clark and Guettel won in their respective categories. This musical number is proof that they both deserved them.

  • Exquisite. The three truly great new musicals of the past decade, Light in the Piazza, Caroline, or Change, and the amazing Next to Normal, all lost the Tony. Commerce over art, business as usual, but glad people are paying attention to these beautiful shows.

  • a master at her craft.

  • goddess.

  • Desperately want this show on DVD...le sigh....

  • Not to worry: I cry every single time I hear the song---even when I'm just listening to the Original Broadcast CD.

It's glorious, and so touching. When I saw the musical in New York (I saw the original cast....I am very lucky..) I couldn't believe what I was hearing in this song. It was quite shattering, actually. So....LOVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I CRY EVERY TIME I hear this song, even when just listening to the CD.

    It's glorious and so touching.

  • Do you see it?? That's her Tony, right there on Youtube!

    Stupendous performance!!!!!

  • This was....breathtaking....

    My goodness...

    This is incredible

  • I sang this last night on my course at RAM, if you're a 25 year old just pretend you're singing about your best friend who is getting married!

  • I saw this four times. It was peerless. I knew from the first few notes that here was a stylish, original musical score. Let's hope Adam Guettel is hard at work on something now.

And i've run out of superlatives for Victoria Clark. She was born to play this role. And the rest of the cast was perfect.

  • one of the greatest musicals ever written

  • @alamaboy well said.

  • My heart sinks every time I listen to this but I love it

  • The problem is very few musicals on Broadway today have true purpose. Over the past twenty years, we're have some gems like Parade, Light In The Piazza, and Next to Normal, and even maybe In The Heights but for the most part, Broadway's been "Disney-fied" and come out with far too many shows for pure entertainment.

Theatre is a beautiful, artistic tool and Broadway needs to accept more provocative, meaningful shows onto its stages.

  • I cannot agree more. The dumbing down and sanitizing of broadway has left it shallow and boring.

I loved The Light in the Piazza for it's totally modern take on old fashioned theater. However, i think it is more of an anomaly than a view of things to come.

  • let´s not talk about if broadway is dying! look at the video and let´s talk about an amazing artist! Victoria Clark! WOW! WOW! WOW!

  • Broadway way needs more shows like this and less shows like Legally blonde, one of the worst Broadway shows of all time, it has cute songs and I love laura bell bundy, but not a good broadway musical at all.

  • aww

I really liked Legally Blonde the musical. It pleasantly surprised me. But to each their own I guess.

  • @PeaceNdLovee

There's room on Broadway for both. Some people might not go for this type of show, as fabulous as it is. If a show is making money, employing actors and stagehands and bringing in audiences who otherwise might not go to the theater, what's the problem?

  • @PeaceNdLovee Apples and Oranges. Both have their merits. Both have their flaws. As beautiful as this show is, bubble-gum camp has its place.

  • 3:31

    Perfect technique.

She came to MSM for a master class and it was phenomenal.

  • It is such a joke and such an indictment on the Broadway theater community that "Spamalot" beat out "LITP." This is just an amazing show. If Broadway is dying, the community has no one to blame but itself for not promoting shows like this.

  • I like more comedic things like Spamalot. I don't know where people get the idea Broadway is dying. There is just a new movement coming now. In The Heights is a very good musical style than most other musicals but I like it alot. Shrek from what I hear was different as well. We parishoners and lovers of Broadway must accept this new wave because alot of good can come from it.

  • Who said that Broadway was dying?

  • What a great performance, and what great music. If only there were more things like this on Broadway. I hope we hear more from Mr. Guettel.

  • amazing performance

  • you know, i noticed something...

victoria clark actually looks like katie rose clarke.

and they have (sort of) the same last name!

    what a co-ink-ee-dink!

    they were amazing(:

  • Is it me, or do I hear someone crying/sniffling at 4:38?

    Not that that's a bad thing, I'm sniffling right now too! ;_;

  • Thanks for posting this.

I have been listening to the cast album virtually non-stop since I got it a few days ago and it's nice to be able to put the staging with the audio.

  • Margaret is a dream role of mine ... and Victoria Clark is just amazing.

  • Haha what gives you the idea that Susan Boyle has the full soprano necessary to sing this song? She can barely get herself through Memory from Cats!

  • She has the breath and I still think she has the range, but she'll need a helluva good coach.

  • @cantaratv Please say you are joking. Susan Boyle would murder this song. She does not have the technique to pull off something as beautiful as this. I honestly do not get the hype about her. Anyway. Incredible Music. Beautiful performance from a truly talented performer!

  • amaaaaazing... i was lucky to see the original cast on broadway

  • This is a revelation!!!!

  • I was in no way trying to be rude. There is such legit singing in Cats, Growltiger's Last Stand. Some versions leave it out bc it's such a long number. I feel like the show is mainly mixy legit including ensemble numbers. Name me a pure belt solo number. Mabye I'm wrong. Macavity is "belty", yet stays in a range that is easy, so technically mixy. All ensemble stuff for Soprano and tenor is WAY legit. Besides the one part in Memory, I'd say the solo stuff stays in a fairly comfortable mix range.

  • Well that's good to know. :)

I don't believe that there's a single show out there were EVERY SINGLE NOTE of a song is belted. The recordings I've heard of "Rum Tum Tugger" and "Memory" were very belty.

I guess it all depends on the performer. Ex: I've heard "On My Own" belted by many (like Kerry Butler), but mixed by others (like Lea Michele).

  • No need to be so rude, bcmt812!!! It is not a stupid argument. Singing is a HUGE part of the fraction of Broadway musicals. Ignorant much? :p

CATS IS mainly belt. There's a higher ratio of belting roles to legit singing roles. Betty Buckley & Elaine Paige are clearly BELTERS. An Italian aria in CATS? I saw that show, multiple times, & I never heard an E6 OR an aria.

Legit singing WILL come back ONE DAY. Mixing is the transition back to it, although it's a relatively new trend.

  • I love this show adam guettel please write more musicals

  • Vicki will always be the owner of this number - and indeed this role. Others can do lovely performances, but it's just gonna go down as an instance when an actor and a part are truly one, so brilliant is their work.

And i have to add, coz i'm a Katie fangirl, her little hand on the face touch just after "I can't leave you" - "yes you can"... that's when my waterworks start!

  • is it weird that i cried when she sang this? her performance is absolutly fabulous.

  • No, it means you are human. I sat in the Vivian Beaumont Theatre 4 times and watched Victoria Clark and she is beyond amazing...a tear down her cheek at the same time in every performance...the way she carries the burden of her daughter on her shoulders and it just seems to pull her down...then this-the most amazing finale ever written for the Broadway stage...she casts off all the weight and just showers the theatre with this aria...to have been there and seen it and heard it...unspeakable joy.

  • Not at all. I had tears streaming down my face by the end of the aria.

  • what an absolutely stunning performance. just beautiful.

  • I LOVED this show. I only regret not getting to see it more than once.

  • When I saw this on Broadway, Victoria Clark had tears streaming down her face by the end of this song. You could just feel the emotion pouring from her voice. She is an absolutely phenomenal actress.

  • We are so fortunate to have Victoria Clark's perfect performance preserved so beautifully in this video. I count this as one of the top 5 performances I've ever seen. (And that's pretty damn good company!)

  • 3:33 is like BUTTAH!

  • Opera, yeah, they don't use mics. Musicals they do. This is a MUSICAL.

  • lol. then adam guttel would have to do more work taking all the book and converting into music.

  • to wickedkdo94: i did an opera where there were LONG scenes of just dialogue...no singing. ppl assume that opera is just continuous singing and nothing more.

  • singspiel.. i think?

  • Yes, the opera I did was a singspiel - Der Freischutz.

  • I think we know that most operas don't use mics, buyt this is a MUSICAL. They used mics.

  • I'll tell you what. Since you're SO OBVIOUSLY a professional, why don't you sing this for hundreds of people without a mike.

I'm sure they'll let you know if they can hear it or not.

  • haha that was good musicwomen16.

  • Uhhhh... No. :/ Maybe in small theatres, but not in threatres of this size.

Do some research next time, Kthxbai.

  • Comment removed

  • Oops! I forgot to revise my comment. Obviously, I was the only one who knew that prior to mentioning it here. LOL! But one of the factors is the acoustics of the opera house. Like I said in my previous comment, I study opera/classical singing, so there's no doubt that I do my research.

You have to do some research, yourself. B'way singing is NOT Bel Canto (yes, on acting). Do you think that Bernadette Peters and Jennifer Holliday sing Bel Canto? Belting has taken over Broadway.....

  • There are very few shows, nowadays, that do require legit singing, like POTO, LITP. You wouldn't sing Bel Canto in RENT, Spring Awakening, Wicked, Dream Girls, CATS, Avenue Q, A Chorus Line. Belting has taken over B'way. Belting and Bel Canto are NOT the same.

To what you said on acting: Opera singers DO act. Some of the greatest opera singers, who can act extremely well, are Natalie Dessay, Anna Netrebko, Luciano Pavarotti, Teresa Stratas etc.

Need I say more? I can, if you'd like.

  • @renethel whats wrong with belting?????mezzo -sopranos should have time to shine too!is bel canto mezzo soprano friendly?or should mezzos be regulated to the bitches, britches , witches and ladies of the night catagory again?

  • @hottieho13

Wait, I don't have anything against belting...it takes great technique.

  • Oy I keep running out of characters for each comment.

I did a solo at a concert hall (Avery Fisher Hall, to be exact) that is about TWICE the size of the Vivian Beaumont Theater without a mic. So yes, we can agree that it has to do with operatic training, but the acoustics there made a HUGE difference.

  • the mic is extremely small and placed on the forehead right outside of the wig and tends to be the color of the person's skin. if they had no mics, the back of the theater wouldnt be able to hear much if the person didnt sing loudly. the entire cast wears them.

  • I think they use wig mics.

  • haha

    it's okay, i cry everytime i watch lp. :)

  • This song is absolutely amazing. It is hard to think that anyone could possibly put so much passion and emotion into a single song, but she does it beautifully. This whole play is incredible.

  • I saw the original cast of the show and it was one of the most beautiful musicals I have ever seen. I had a lump in my throat the entire time. It was an amazing feast for all the senses!

  • Spellbinding...I will never forget sitting in the Vivian Beaumont at Lincoln Center and taking in every second of Victoria's performance...the tear that fell at the same time...just a magical character and a true STAR...thank you Victoria...and you were so nice at the Stage Door.

  • her argument with herself in this song is just so unbelievably breathtaking.

this was executed to complete and utter perfection by the exquisite Victoria Clarke. This number absolutely kills me everytime.

I mean honestly: Love, love, love if you can, oh my Clara. love if you can and be loved..

    I'm crying.

  • I have tears streaming down my face.

  • Truly amazing.

  • OMG.

    I really have no words.

I have the soundtrack and know this song well, but to see her... to hear this and watch this...

it is so moving! What a powerful powerful performance!

  • Victoria Clark is my hero.

  • I am speechless, in tears.

  • I have to agree one of the most simple finales to a Broadway show in ages, however, in that simplicity lies the tremendous power that is showcased here. It was very ambitious to end a show on a single woman's shoulders but Victoria Clark pulls out all the stops with her voice, acting, and just physical presence. She is truly spectacular.

  • Still...the most amazing finale to perhaps ever to grace the Broadway Stage...one actress, an amazing voice and talent, and one damn frick'n amazing character who just brought the curtain down with no special effects, no over-the-top stage-magic...just an amazing song, heartbreaking lyrics, a voice to top them all, and Victoria...who is the Queen of Broadway, without a doubt.

Saw her four times. She is just amazing and we are blessed to have this performance, this person, captured on video.

  • I remember the first time I heard this song on AccuBroadway I thought Victoria Clark was a lot younger because her voice is so amazing.

  • actually she really isn't that old, it's only the make up and clothes, etc. that makeher look old.

  • Oh, I love this song, but it makes me cry every time.

    A true artist.

  • Oh my god... AMAZING.

My voice instructor actually gave me 'The Beauty Is' for a piece to learn last semester. I never thought to look for video on here-this show is beautiful, I love the sets, and the costumes, and everything!

  • I cried so hard listening to this song. Only the one and only Victoria Clark could've delivered the full emotions of this song.

  • brava!

  • Jesus! Katie and I went to college together and I saw the show on a matinee at the end of long week, Victoria Clark= Sheer Perfection. Every performance, Every time. The effortless technique that this woman has is absolutley mind numbing! I actually think I learned more about my craft the day I witnessed her performance, than I did in 4 years of Musical Theatre college.

  • i try to imagine another singer in this role and it almost imposible. because "she is" absolute perfect and believable. I enjoy musical theater and i love this one in particular for many reasons. BRAVO to the entirely cast..!!

  • *sniff* That song is so beautiful and sad... it's just lovely.

    Thanks for posting!

  • no problem! it made me cry too, lol

  • It makes me cry too but in a good way. Margaret is seeing her daughter grab at love and hoping for the best for her marriage
