Talking about the look and taste of plums, especially if she confronts him when he's back, is evocatively erotic. He will think of her and the plums all day, excited by the thought her reacting to his provocation. Perhaps he will bring plums home and they will eat them together, exchanging knowing looks and provoking comments.

It's a kind of implicit declaration of love. There are different ways to say it, and this is one of them. If he weren't in love he wouldn't do it, but as he was he (the poem character, maybe Matthew as well) misses no chance to express it . And it doesn't matter whether it deals with plumps, ice box or dustbin, the main is :so sweet. And intonation. Can you say to the man you are in love with "you are a marvelous monster!"?
