  • Nostalgia for your parents' hometown is a very strange and painful feeling. I've never been to Hong Kong except as a tourist but my parents' fond recollections of their childhoods there make me feel as if I have an intimate connection to the place myself. Beautiful pictures and song!

  • This is a great place to live - HK. No place like HK. Cannot wait to go back to HK and live.

  • I never knew this time but I can see why my parents loved it so much =)

    何來1810年= ="

  • this is a song of Hong Kong!

  • if his songs reveal the truth of life, and we are brought to tears, is this tears of wisdom, or sadness ? if sadness, it is not truth. truth of life should be wisdom.

  • @liahma123 totally agree with you

  • Sam sings the songs of life, no borders, no nation, no time; just a working man trying to survive this fate we call life. His songs might be funny, sad, or longing, but it carries the truth; a truth that can bring a grown man to tears in silence. Once again, in this economic turmoil, his songs are more prevalent than ever. I hope all his songs are digitally saved for the future generations.

  • classic HK

  • Sam is one the best songwriter anywhere. His lyrics are so incredibly beautiful. His voice is just fabulous. Although I am not from HK, I very much agree with others that his songs conjure an image of HK of that time, just amazingly poetic. Great video..

  • this song always bring a smile on my face

  • @khyywu

  • Awesome pictures.

  • I love Hong Kong. I love Bruce Lee, jackie Chan, Sam Hui, Ti Lung, Lo Lieh the swordsman.

  • Awesome post. These pics are before my time but it's still home nonetheless. Thanks.

  • A good slideshow - thanks! Not all the postcards are old. One of them shows the Sheraton Hotel which I remember was opened about 1973. There's a shot of boys in tight white shorts getting on a bus. That style ended by about 1978.

  • Thank you for posting this video and thank you for the memories!

  • hong kong golden period was around 80's. my childhood (actually, most of us) was so much influenced by everything from hk. unlike nowadays, Taiwanese or mainland has slowly replaced the hk's status. nevertheless, i love hk, always. from Kuala Lumpur.

  • @tsltan Yup, China n Taiwanese entertainment hav a different taste than Hong Kong. Sadly my love for them were stuck with 80s and 90s. And from KL too here.

  • @tsltan

    Oh yes, the 80's.

Remember how almost all toys have "Made in Hong Kong" engraved underneath the toys? And their quality much better compared to today's toys.

    Those were the days.

  • I heard this song at a Canadian University at student christmas dinner by two amatures. Good melody combined with good pics, it flashs back some good memories. This song is a mix of eastern and western styles.

  • always the mainland's fault... lol (I support HK too)

  • I don't miss living in HK, I left there in the 70's and I am glad that I did. The things I miss are friends and relatives, of course friends are long gone. A few relatives remains. I stumble across this old song that I remember, but you know, I don't unstand half of what it's trying to say. Nice pictures though.

  • @rustynail246

I stumbled across this song also. I was born there in the late 60s. We left to Los Angeles in the 70s as well. I was just old enough to remember bit and pieces of this song because it was played on the radio so much back then. I would love to know what the words means. I do remember a couple of those places in central district. The song and the picture combined almost made me cry. It was bit and pieces of my early childhood.

  • Miss the old Hong Kong: less crowed, less rude mainland people, less traffic, less politic show, cleaner air, sense of a neighborhood... After relocated back here for 3 years, I'm tired about this new Hong Kong, and leaving this place once i called home. Sad...

  • Home Sweet Home. The older I get, the more I appreciate the feelings expressed in this song. But do I have the courage to put down what I have accomplished on foreign land and go home? Afraid not.

  • @zimmerg3 Funny you say that. many of the older folks I know who are going home to various parts of mexico or other parts of the US where they are from after they retire. Why not us? People simply go home. I have 20+ years to go but I am not about to leave my family behind and retire in HK. It has across my mind. Every time I visit there, It puts a huge smile on my face. My wife is so ABC who couldn't care less. I was only a little boy when we left for "Gold Mountain".

  • long live hong kong!

  • before is beautier than now...

  • i love Hong Kong

  • Thank you for the glimpse to old Hong Kong. Although I don't understand chinese, I feel the song to be beautiful.

  • I migrated to the US 6 yrs ago. As time goes on, I more and more understand and feel this song.....even though I'm used to the US now.

  • This song is not about HK though, it's about the States, Parais, Japan, and other overseas locations. But I love the song anyway.

  • The tacit theme of this song is about Hong Kong. In particular, the reference was that after travelling to other places such as Paris, the United States, etc, Hong Kong is still the best. While one might or might agree with the sentiment, the person who wrote the lyrics, Michael Hui, has clearly explained that on one of his talks.

  • Very Good Old Song ...Thanks

  • well im going there tomorrow

  • Thanks for the upload. Fantastic!

  • Excellent music for this slide show ,Thanks for sharing

  • although im not from hong kong but it seems weird i like his songs alot .. and always think back when i was listening to this song .. i wonder why ..

  • Everytime I feel so touched when I hear the music that is represented Hong Kong life.

  • What ever happened to Tiger Balm Gardens and where was it? I remember it as a kid in HK, have the slides, but have no idea where it is now.

  • it was demolished. i lived next to the Garden before. I miss the old HK..

  • the address was Tai Hang Road, Causeway Bay.

  • Thanks for that. I guess it's turned into a block of flats or a shopping centre!

  • i remember the Garden was not totally demolished. some parts of it still exist. let me check it when i go back to HK next month.ha..

  • HK looked the best in the 1970s and 1980s in my opinion. When the outline of the mountains were still visible from the opposite.

  • I came to HK since the 80s on a regular basis for work. Agree about the skies. Such a pitty today.

Anyway I still liked the place enough to have made it my home since the early 21st century. Even if today again is a foggy, hazy, polluted day.

Longing for one of the very few clear days...

  • thank you very much. Excellent music for this slide show

  • loved this trip down memory lane!

  • Support Sam Hui forever! His songs made me very comfortable, the lyrics is meaningful!

  • i honestly love hongkong!!! i left footprints to many places, i'm not currently in hong kong, but my heart is! hong kong is always always my home! i love you, hong kong.

  • Brought back great memories from my time there in early 70's....must be so different now, I know I wouldn't recognise it..

  • Thank you so much for putting up this slideshow. Well done!

  • I LOVE HONG KONG!!

  • thx..................

  • Looking at these pictures makes me wish I could go back to the old Hong Kong, back when there was still the Star Ferry, as well as a lot of other historic landmarks, a wider harbour, less high-rise buildings, less crowds...

  • that is a really ignorant statement, the brits might not had the best of intentions, yet they inplanted the concept of law and a free society, the two most valuable foundation of HK!

  • wtf...without the brits there would be no hong kong. HK is the only place where cantonese is official next to english and mandarin. In guangdong the mandarin are taking over everything. HK must never become mandarin!

  • @eenuniekenaam its too late man. after 97, the mainlanders start moving down, education is on the decline. everyone is starting to make stupid decisions and common sense is out the window. its a lost cause, get out while you can

  • @defghui And go where? Rather than run and hide, stay and fight! Improve your homeland from the ground up, brother! It's the only way for humanity.

  • @defghui new HK is starting to falling apart like America...

  • @kl9977gmail yea man, us govt seems to only do things to annoy each other.

  • @eenuniekenaam you want to bet ? mandarin will be the preferred language in hk sooner or later. I moved to the San Francisco bay area 27 years ago from hk and I witnessed the similar change for chineses here.

  • 1900 nathan road... lol

  • Hone Kong is the best!!

  • @cycmd in the past (b4 97), so Hong Kong was the best !

  • @gracewong9999

Yes, you are right absolutely. It should be: HK was the best!

That is too sad. Thank you for reminding me.

  • an excellent collection of old hong kong photos
