  • I got to know hamp after i took a couple of lessons from him in the early 60's. the first thing he said if you really want to get your chops goin ya gotta play this stuff.. then he ripped off a fughe from the well tempered clavier flawlessly and then i exclaimed hamp i thought you didn't read music. then he countere" no problem i got a recording of it" . in other words he took it off the recording by ear !

  • Had this same record 50 years ago. First time I heard Hawes. I don't remember the other songs much because whenever I played the album it was for 'I Hear Music' & then the Carl Perkins number. This upload sounds 10 times fuller clearer than my original album. Can't believe how great Mel Lewis sounds! I lost the album long time ago but I have it on the Hawes trio 2CDset. Thanks for sharing & showing this with the world! 'The Master' - Hampton Hawes deserves it
