  • In the UK this was a single and that's was the first time I heard it. It blew me away and I wore it out within a couple of months. It never made the charts though because it was banned due to the word b**tards. This song is best played very loud to get the full effect of the brilliant arrangement.

  • I like every version of this song! It is my favorite song of all time. But, I've always thought that it seemed a curious case of reincarnation of a spirit that is beset by terribly bad luck! Every demise in this song is tragic!

  • Saw Jimmy Webb on a show that Bobby Bare had on The Nashville Network years ago and he said this song came to him in a dream.

My favorite version is the one Glen did live with the South Dakota Symphony. It used to be on here but I guess it got taken down.

  • Original was on 45 and by the writer, Jimmy Webb. This is a poor version by comparison. Can't find original on You Tbe so I suppose I'll have to post it!

  • @charliedehaven Bah! This is the best version. Webb did an excellent version, but it didn't have the "bite" this one does. Plus Webb didn't have the vocals Campbell had.

  • @thinkhard34- I like the "Highwaymen" version also, as a different singer 'embodies' each aspect of the highwayman persona. But I shy away from calling any version 'better', because it becomes a matter of personal taste and preference. After all, it's a well written song, and all the versions I've heard have been great.

  • not bad, but yes, the highwaymen did it better. My preference though

  • Thanks for the upload, best version of this song to date

  • Nice version of the highwayman. I only knew the Makem and Clancy version which I adore. Thanks for sharing.

  • It seems I remember Campbell doing a version of this with the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band . Or it could have been with John Hartford. Anyone help me with this? Thanks Great song.

  • i need his concert in south dakota version of this song...

  • The way those strings rise and resolve on the words "reach the other side" on the last verse gives me shivers. So great.

  • I always did prefer Glen over Cash and co.. soz all :/ but who did the original?

  • @rycor85 Jimmy Webb - who also wrote this...

  • @rycor85

    The writer, Jimmy Webb.

  • @rickv404 haha correct and the highwaymen did it differently but by no stretch was Glen better, personal preferance though i suppose :)
