Um...I'll assume that Grassley knows those $16 muffins were eaten at DoJ conferences between 2007-2008? He should probably be talking to Gonzo about this, not inferring it happened on Obama's watch.
However, I guess the can still blather about it being an example of how ALL gubmint is bad regardless of which party is controlling the Executive Branch of it. (Allowing him to run on a platform of how bad government is, then get elected and PROVE it. *sigh*)
As I recall we had $400+ hammers and $600+ toilet seats during Jimmy Carter's regime. This is why conservatives are appalled by government waste. We're regular people who just don't think that's a good value and would not pay such outlandish prices for our own purposes. Why would we want public servants to pay them?
1. There WAS no $400 hammer. That was a billing mistake. Look it up.
2.As you demonstrated a knowledge of the $600 P-3 Orion toilet seat affair below, I'll assume that you also know it happened in 1985, during the REAGAN Administration.

1. A result of "equal allocation accounting". A method that masks the true cost of every line item in the contract. It turned out that the government paid too much for that entire contract. But the ridiculous government accounting system made it impossible to figure out by how much. In the end the supplier returned $29k to make the government go away. Do you really believe that government is efficient? Really?!?
When it's run by honest people, rather than people with a vested political and financial interest in it NOT being efficient, yes. Medicare has an administrative cost of 2%, while private HMOs have an administrative overhead closer to 20%
In that case somebody's got a lot of explaining to do about selling stocks in a federal government department on the NYSE for 42 years under the stock ticker symbol FNM.
Tell me about it! Can you say "Government Sponsored Enterprise"? Until "too big to fail" came along, the handful of GSEs were the only "public corporations" that were tax exempt and had a direct line of credit to the US Treasury. They were effectively backed by the full faith and credit of the US govt and, as a result, operated at much lower costs than other truly private firms. Hardly seems fair, does it? I'm with you - somebody's got a lot of explaining to do
@TrollBuster9090 I dunno, maybe the industries that built the computer in front of your tiny little brain, or the car you drive, or made the clothes on your back, or grew the food you ate today, or created anything and everything you interact with any minute of any day.
Feel free to ... oh wait, you're not free to do anything. You're a slave to the state. Well, have a nice day, loser.
2. DoD admitted at the time it came to light, that the supplier charged too much. But, I see that your primary concern here is attacking a conservative administration. Interestingly, you never mention that it happened during 40 years of a Dem controlled House.
3. You remember the House of Representatives don't you? The body that controls the purse strings? For a more contemporary perspective consider that the Dems have owned Congress since 2007. (Hmmmm - when did that big government debt thing begin again?)
Yes I do. Congress determines how much money will be given to DoD programs. You remember the Executive Branch, don't you? Well, it's up to the Executive Branch to administer those programs. And you were very quick to jump on the waste and inefficiency when you though it was Carter, but are very quick to defend it once somebody points out it was actually a "conservative administration."
I always defend the truth against tyrants. Enjoy the bread lines your Master has given you, loser. Because the current Executive Branch jussssst about done.
4. You mean when the Dems cut a budget deal with Reagan and then cheated him? Well, let's not squabble about that, because I can trump you many times over with BO & Co. You don't EVEN want to go there, little man.
No, by all means, go there. The National Debt was less than one trillion when St. Ronnie entered office, and was nearly triple that when he left. Bush Sr. came close to doubling it, and Bush Jr. more than doubled it. Obama brought the debt from 12 trillion to 14.5, an increase of about 21%. Impressive, but nowhere near Reagan's accomplishment of boosting it by 280%.
I get that you still don't understand that Congress controls the purse strings. I'm sorry for you on that. If you come to your senses take a look at this:
Pay particular attention to who controlled Congress from Reagan on and look what the debt line does. Dems control it - debt goes up; GOP controls it - debt goes down. Even high RINO content causes increased debt.
5. I might have bought this line if you had said "Republicans" instead of "conservatives". But, as it stands it is an absurd statement. Conservatives, by definition, are fiscally responsible. Are you clueless about conservatism? Do you not see what's going on in the GOP vis-a-vis the Tea Party? Do you not know that the Tea Party is a reaction to the RINOs in the GOP? Are blind to the similar hijacking of the DNC by Fascists? Get a clue, my friend. Before it's too late.
Know what a 'No True Scotsman' fallacy is? Look it up and you'll see your picture. How is it possible that Republicans have managed to run up 70% of the nation's debt while blathering about "tax and spend liberals?" Because conservatives like you are gullible enough to fall for their song and dance every time, and vote for them time and time again.
Tea Party? What's that? Show me one member of Congress who ran on the Tea Party Ticket.

@Richardgwm Well, by all means, let's not spread lies. It was a 5-day Executive Office for Immigration Review conference at DC's Capital Hilton in August, 2009. @00Weedman00 These prices are for charges incurred during the Bush administration. Has no one actually read the inspector general report? None of these charges were incurred over the last 2 years. They are all from 2006 through early 2009.
"The event planner told us that the hotel waived meeting space fees so long as the conference incurred at least $50,000 on food and beverages, not including service charges"
Ahhh, so they actually didn't pay $16 for a muffin. They charge for meeting space, and service charges are included in that "price" for a muffin. This is how bullshit myths start. It's like going to hotel overnight and then saying you paid $120 for their continental breakfast. Complete bullshit!
Just like that story about the Navy spending $400 on toilet seats is complete bullshit, but to this day not only does it persist, but EVERYBODY'S HEARD it. It has anti-gubmint resonance. (In reality, the corrosion resistant cover for the toilet system in the P-3 aircraft cost $400. But we're not exactly talking about a $40 plastic toilet you can pick up at Wallmart.) As Mark Twain said, a lie gets half way around the world before the truth even gets its boots on.
@TrollBuster9090 The government determined that the toilet cover in P-3C Orion aircraft needed replacement. Lockheed Corp. charged $34,560 for 54 toilet covers, or $640 each. I'm sorry, but I just don't have the gall to justify that kind of expense using other peoples' money and keep a straight face. That everyone in government seems to be fine with it burns regular folks up. Frankly, WE'RE MAD AS HELL AND WE'RE NOT GOING TO TAKE IT ANYMORE!!! THROW THE BUMS OUT!!!
"I'm sorry, but I just don't have the gall to justify that kind of expense."
So, your alternative would be to do what? A) Replace the P-3 fleet at a cost of several billion dollars, or B) Have the pilots shit into a bucket during 20 hour flights?
You've heard of the economy of scale, haven't you? We're not talking about a mass produced toilet system, they had to be made individually. How about campaigning for a smaller military, rather than against imaginary wasteful spending
@TrollBuster9090 Interesting, albeit absurd, alternatives you've identified. But, perfect to illustrate the kind of thinking (or lack thereof) that pervades advocates of more big government.
Oh, puleeease - they're toilet seat covers, not Hoover Dams! I can personally create 54 of them for less than $34,000!
Oddly, the only place where "economy of scale" NEVER works is government. How about campaigning for smaller government instead of Big Brother.
@shalcall Well, of course, then there's that little matter of $600k for event planning services. For a conference of government workers in a DC Hotel?!?
BTW - Joe Biden got all hot about the "$16 muffins", too.
So, are you for excessive government spending, or just against Grassley?
Don't get me wrong, I'm no fan of Grassley (probably for different reasons than you.) But, defending government waste belies an agenda-driven ideology.
@BErectus I'm not defending government waste. I'm calling out exaggeration and bullshit. You want to complain about spending $600k for event planning services, do that. You want to say that the gov't literally spent $16 on a muffin, I'm going to call you out for bullshitting. There is plenty of waste in government, particularly in the DoD where they're still building planes and running training exercises to fight the non-existent U.S.S.R.. But at least be honest about it.
@shalcall On that we can agree - there is plenty of waste in government. Whether DoD wastes more than HHS is debatable I suppose. (Some people feel that defense is one of the few legitimate functions of government, as opposed to HHS initiatives to do things like redistribute wealth, regulate industry out of existance, and defend itself against its own fraud.) One thing I can assure you: the waste will not shrink unless the government shrinks.
@ultrapirtle Muffins are *another* of our worries. Along with toilet seats, hammers, bombs, and anything else the government purchases. Why? Because it is human nature to care more about one's own wealth than about the wealth of others. So, when the hotel tacks a few dozen $16 muffins onto the conference room charge the conference facilitator's response is, "Eh, what do I care? It's not my money." And THAT is why true conservatives want smaller government.
@cooperbry Hilton Hotels has explained the truth behind these lies. Real journalists would have called the hotel before spreading these lies, but as we know, journalism is dead.
@Richardgwm The sad part is that it's spread in the same manner it's produced. Without any verification. Need to be careful what you listen to these days!
This isn't really newsworthy.. gotta take that up with whoever organized the event. Not try to make a appeal to the American people. If a company charged those kinds of prices in the average consumer market, they'd be out of business pretty quick. Besides, the same people attending these conferences are the one's buying million dollar yachts, don't think they should be bitching over 16 dollar muffins, just saying.
This $16.00 dollars charged was for a wide variety of refreshments all put together. Coffee, Tea, Milk, Orange Juice, Soda, Doughnuts, fruit, cookies, and of course muffins. I'm pretty sure that not one person can defend purchasing a muffin for $16.00. Even Warren Buffet wouldn't buy it ;)
cooperbry 5 months ago
@cooperbry It never happened. The $16 was for a complete breakfast. The story is a complete lie.

@Richardgwm Oh, It's CNN. I guess we just can't trust them or tpmtv...

@cooperbry Hilton Hotels has explained the truth behind these lies. Real journalists would have called the hotel before spreading these lies, but as we know, journalism is dead.
Richardgwm 5 months ago
@Richardgwm The sad part is that it's spread in the same manner it's produced. Without any verification. Need to be careful what you listen to these days!

Oh for Christ's sake. Yes, the price they paid is ridiculous but there's far worse waste in the govt. Like say, Haliburton.

This isn't really newsworthy.. gotta take that up with whoever organized the event. Not try to make a appeal to the American people. If a company charged those kinds of prices in the average consumer market, they'd be out of business pretty quick. Besides, the same people attending these conferences are the one's buying million dollar yachts, don't think they should be bitching over 16 dollar muffins, just saying.

this is nothing, theres a hotel that sells a $1000.00 omelet with real gold flakes!
