  • It probably would have worked if he had frozen the freewheeler and used one outer sprocket for the crank and an inner sprocket for the work table. Do without the derailler altogether.

  • A major drawback to it is no handlebars. He loses at least 1/3 of his power output. He was aiming it downhill in the video for more power.

The work chain uses those little derailler sprockets for power transmission, which they were never meant to handle. That was probably the fatal flaw to the whole thing.

  • Wow great idea. : )

  • yeah pero pa ke mi súchiles si no dejó planos y destruyeron la máquina =-(

    Así paquete cuetes!Thumbs down

  • This is why documentation is so important. There are lots of " gear heads " out there that could build something like this themselves with no " instructions ", but there are a lot of others that would love to build something just like this, that are not mechanicaly inclined, and need some instructional guidence.

  • This is awesome! I am going to build one to power my grow lights!

  • hello

Are any instructions available for building this bike and for making the corn degrainer?

    Thanks

  • 5 gallons a minute, wow.....I think I could pick that up in say 10 seconds for the distance the water moved.

  • This fantastic!! Bravo!! You could get together with the "Garbage Warrior" who teaches us how to create sustainable homes and helped out the survivors of the tsunami in 2004....innorvators like yourself are coming together all over the world now to improve living conditions. Especially in poverty stressed areas of the world. It would be lovely if you choose to create a video eventually that shows the blueprints of how to make our own life-sustaining bike-machine! Blessings... :*)

  • wow your great for turning that bike into what most will think is a weapon..lol..but its also helpful in the speed..rollin that fast the more points you get just like the movies..but do not try that at home...what if that shit..reflect more than a cat and hit yo ass in the mouth..lol

  • wow your great for turning that bike into what most will think is a weapon..lol..but its also helpful in the speed..rolli that fast the more points like the movies..but do not try that at home...

  • Nice job! Did you use a derailleur, or is it single speed? Great idea with the cement filled tire! Economical frame, too.

  • this actually IS INNOVATION...thank you for your videos...

  • thats an awesome idea and you get excerise 2

  • Great job! I was looking to do something similar and this is a great sample. Gracias por bajar tu video. Suerte!

  • takes quite a lot of energy to power that generator, five minutes and you're done. If that long.

  • This is one of the coolest things I have seen in a VERY long time! I want one (but I'm poor : (

  • IDIOT

  • howdy, what a great idea to combine all the machines into one! I´´m at Maya Pedal now do you know if that machine is still kicking around? how long did you stay at mp? did you make any plans for this?

  • @amike6301

Sadly Carlos took the machine apart when he needed parts. Last time I was there, the frame was on the roof and flywheel was still around (just look for the wheel with the cement filled tire).

I never made instructions but the only difficult part was the chain drive.

  • Excellent idea and execution. You're the master. is a very useful thing where electricity is not available, expensive gasoline. Thank for your multifunction device.

  • Such a good idea! Righteous. If, by chance, someone was inclined to make a step by step instruction on how to construct this, it'd be a lot more accessible.

  • And maybe with an air-conditioning-adapter for Export to the US :)

  • this is awesome we need more of these in are world

  • useful info if I survived dooms day..

  • 5 Stars! This is what makes mankind great thinking and inventing - not whining about how you can't do something!

God bless and thanks for the video.

  • awesome video-way to improvise-probably makes life a hole lot easier in that area of the world!!!

  • light weight and compact? So that shit folds up to shove under your bed?

  • A really Ingeniuos and smart use of recycled and spare parts to have one item doing several different functions!!!!!

  • Why not ?! Doing some exercice while doing some stuff like free electricity and other stuff showed in the video! Good ideas. Best of that it's easy to build at home with few tools and imagination

  • I'm looking for pedal/treadle powered tool, that can be built with old bikes, like a band saw, belt sander/grinder, Ideas

  • Have you got the butter-churning option available for sale? What about a blender and an electric generator??

  • This machine is just a prototype, it is not for sale, and probably never will be. Mayapedal makes many similar machines but they serve local communities in Guatemala. We don't have any butter churning machines. Sorry I can't be of more help.

  • @MackAndAmaya

Are any instructions available for the corn degrainer and the bike?

    Thanks Ioannis

  • Look at the title of the video, genius.

  • The Innovate or Die competition, was a design contest sponsored by Specialized BIke Company and Youtube. They solicited for novel designs that used bike technology to solve the world's problems.

And please let's stay civil (both of you) or I will remove your posts.

  • Do you have pedal powered version of the garden chipper shredder machine? I want to make mulch for vermicomposting & having a workout at the same time.

  • I do not have one. But I think I recall seeing a video of one on youtube. I couldn't tell you where though.

  • mmmhh that's so smart!

  • I want one of these!

  • Innovation '~)) great work .. hope you'll join us here ..

    Cheers,

    Red.

  • LOL

  • Dude the corn cob went in the spoke and then they cut the scene. Probably cause he had a corn cob stuck in the spoke and had to like get it fixed at a bike shop. I can't stop laughing that killed me.

  • I'm glad you got a laugh out of the video. But, no the cob did not get stuck. The flywheel has enough kinetic energy to shred the cob, even if it did get caught, but they mostly just fall to the side harmlessly.

  • jbong...you are a crack up!!

  • This is so stupid. It wiould be great for a third world country thats about it.

  • Well, it was designed to be used in developing countries.

  • I would have used their washing machine after Ike, instead of doing laundry in the tub. And I've read about people elsewhere with flooded basements having to wait until power was restored before draining. So just because you don't see a use for it in your life at this time doesn't make it stupid.

  • Great execution of a great idea. I've been wanting something like this for awhile. You mentioned a few other attachments in the end of the video, but I couldn't quite make out what you said. Would you mind telling us what you said?

Also are you planning on designing a way of hooking up the washing machine to it?

Keep on pedaling man. Keep on pedaling :)

  • I have no plans to make it compatible with the washing machine. I would like to make more attachments for it, but the washing machine works better as a stand alone device.

  • START MAKING MORE. GET PPL TO make more!

We are running out of time. the US is BANKRUPT!

ITS only a matter of time b4 the shit hits the fan. mid 2009. All ideas are on the table. Helping ppl and making things easier for ppl will become in need. Food might be our only Global problem, but if we say that's our main one...well we can fix that.

    "Never, Never, Never Give up!

  • I can't believe it. I invented this the other day in my head and told my husband that he needs to build it. I wanted it for pumping water, grain grinding and blending. Voila. You have already done it. Wonderful!!!

  • un saludo desde san pedro belize ,donde estas ?en que lugar de guatemala ?me gustaria conocerle y aprender y hasta conseguir uno de esos maravillosos instrumentos de progreso...omar

  • why doesn't anyone market something like this? It doesn't look like it'd be too difficult to mass produce, except I suppose the various attachments could become quite complex and expensive. anyway, great idea and implementation, love it. Looks like it would be great for developing countries. I'd seriously consider buying one if I knew where to find.

  • chuck harris uses a griding stone mounted on a bike frame kinda like this

he uses it to grind down the edges of his patented mirrors which are made from reused materials

and he has been doing this since 1970s or so

  • This is such a wonderful device, i posted it to my 6390 friends on myspace today, many who are environmentalists looking for alternative energy, i am collecting information like this, now i want to know were to get the plans

  • Why do you have a wheel and tire on the machine?

  • Some of the tools are driven by friction (an axle rubbing against the tire). Changing the inflation pressure helps control the friction for those tools.

For the chain driven tools, the tire is actually filled with cement and acts as a flywheel.

  • step by step instructions...very innovative!

  • Very nice presentation of some of the many things that we can do instead of sitting around watching TV. You can do them WHILE you are sitting around watching TV. The knife sharpening was a little sketchy with that huge machete or whatever it was. Scary. A+

  • genius..

  • and yeah um who do I write out the check to?

  • innovative

  • I want to build one

but I want to really build

    a generator.

  • I am really amazed: ideas like this one are what we need to reduce our use of energy. GREAT WORK!!

  • lol

  • Great presentation and excellent innovation.

  • This has far more uses than knife sharpening! Open mind please. "Minds are like parachutes, they function best when open." Grinding corn is important to many people, also coffee,

    spices.

  • Fantastic! E. F. Schumacher, of "Small Is Beautiful" fame, would have been proud of you!

    Congratulations!

  • I'd been across Thialand in 1996 when what I mostly saw in remote villages were not aging junkies but a simular use alike this bike design but with Mopeds .

  • The Amish and Mennonites will like this type of device. Agricultural settings have used fuel inefficient vehicles to do certain jobs. They need to be replaced with bike-like gadgets!

  • I've spent over 20 years living in developing countries across Asia, Africa, and the South Pacific. Your invention should have won over the Aquaduct, which is extremely unsustainable in the third world and is why western countries have so much trouble effecting change overseas. Your invention has huge potential because it's a low-tech, inexpensive unit that is easy to build and repair from local materials, and can be adapted to local needs. You have an awesome invention, keep promoting it!

  • Thank you for your compliment. Those were the goals I was aiming for. Hopefully, I'll be able to do some good with this design.

  • This is totally over engineered in my view. A knife needs sharpening only occasionally. And it can be sharpened using nothing more than a rock and a small amount of water. It is hardly economical to build this contraption to do such a trivial task.

  • The sharpener is not meant for home use, it's intended to enable micro industry. There is a demonstrated demand for similar designs. Similarly, a woman's group in Guatemala has been quite successful using pedal powered blenders to make organic shampoo for sale.

No one user is expected to need all of the attachments, but they allow any user to expand the utility of their machine with minimal extra cost or effort.

  • Point taken.

  • Dude, that is awesome.

  • Thanks for getting past the embarrassment and posting! I wish you success getting your invention into the hands of the people who need it most.

  • Yeah, but can it fold up and fit under your couch?

  • Yet you can't ride it.

  • Wow... is it weird that the first thing I thought of when he showed the sharpener with a machete was Rwanda?

  • It sounds sorta good but I can see someone accidentally killing themselves when they sharpen tools.

  • Actually it is not a bad product idea but maybe needs some more thought on implementation. Maybe you could have one or a few of these in a village for everyone to share or pay like a penny per use to upkeep maintenance and since people would all need it for different uses, they would have their own attachments. The attachment feature would need to be retooled and reconfigured to make it a little easier to use for a universal port - say make a standardized piece for attachements.

  • you know, that would actually work, and the girl would get some exercise at the same time. make her work that ass off in order to get off. i like this idea. now had you mentioned something like a solar powered flashlight then you would have been a witty smartass. how about you stfu and invent something useful yourself. i think this invention is a great idea and would be especially useful in 3rd world countries where they don't share the same luxuries that we take for granted where we live.

  • oh that was directed at "audiodead" by the way

  • Seriously. People are always coming up with inventions that solve problems that don't really exist. Poor people in 3rd world countries aren't dying because they don't have sharp knives! See my point.

  • yeah, you have a point, but if we gave them this kind of technology, and the technology to create clean drinking water for themselves, then maybe the "powers that be" can spend more time worrying about issues at home rather than spending all of our time and resources on those countries instead. before any of you "do-gooders" out there lash out at me, don't get me wrong, i support the idea of enabling those people but i firmly believe theres a point whem our helping hand has been overextended.

  • good idea. needs some more work! great job tho!

  • your video is fantastic and plenty of authentticity, so don't you worry about the editing. who cares about be cool in such way? I'm in love with your multi bike, how can I buy one or bild one if you sell blue prints? this is so impresive! congratulations, that is a incredible thing you got here guy!

  • brilliant!!! makes me want to live in third world country... NOT...

    but still brilliant :)

  • Oh yes.... you 1° world are all bright people...... NOT!!!

  • I know you wish you had lived in mexico so you can cross the border right? YES!!!

  • JAJAJAJAJ!!!!!

  • suck my balls

  • I see you soon run out of arguments and start insulting...

The same does your fucking president... once he run out of lies.. he start bombing.

It´s good that you love your country, because soon you will not be welcome anywhere else...

  • i love ya bro! South Americans are always passionate and firey... you guys make the world more interesting... peace... don't immediately assume i'm american my chilean brother... why the hell do you start speaking in spanish and expect me to give an intelligent response?

  • Why the hell I have to speake in English!! Lo hago por respeto, something you don´t know shit!!

I will not continue this conversation because it´s not going nowhere

  • The invention is wonderful, it will provide solutions to many people and it would be very useful to people like you, probably if you spend some energy in something else than increasing your "ego" would make this world a little better.... ¿Who´s responsible for half of the global warming?? YOU (and China) ¿Who has the most Weapons of Mass Destructio?? YOU (and other countries) And ¿Who bomb other countries with that excuse??(Fake excuse by the way)YOU (and nobody else)

  • Así que... empieza a ver más allá de tu puto y breve horizote... y date cuenta de como realmente funciona el mundo...

  • Saying it has no use except in a third world country is bogus! Us industrialized lazy people could actually use something like this.

  • Try not to be too embarrassed about the video, and let's focus on what you have here. The corn degrainer is used to a very unneeded (but very much needed in Guatemala) application. Everyone likes a coffee grind or a spice grind. Chefs...be careful. Going up and down while sharpening your knife might be...dangerous. Everyone WANTS a blender. And the generator is great for those power outages. Now, the amount of attachments might be a bit daunting, but some of it is worth it.

    [font32]YES.

  • Impractical, will never see any sort of market.

  • I believe this is meant for poverty stricken areas of Mexico where electricity is above many people's budget.

  • Congratulation on your work and for choosing to help people in need!

Since a bicycle is already a great transportation system, why not create a smaller stationary adapter so that a normal bicycle could be adapted to the grinder, pump etc...

Thanks for your idea and your post!

  • Thank you.

I didn't feel it necessary to maintain bike function based on how I expect the machine to be used.

Another entrant developed a great multiuse bike that can still be ridden. However, with my design, I felt I would have to sacrifice stability, ergonomics, and flexibility. Also, riding the machine over rough dirt roads would decrease the functional lifespan of the machine.

  • Don't get me wrong, the machine is still stationary, the bike can be used to ride around and, when adapted to the machine, can power the machine. This is what I meant, your idea is great, I guess for users whishing to have a transportation system AND your machine, then a separable bicycle from the machine can be a good advantage.

I hope I can help you bring your ideas to the people who need it.

  • OMG! the blender thing is so cool! makeing a smoothie would be so much more fun

  • great work!! nice idea and execution!!

  • awesome stuff yo. very smart.

  • it's a good idea, but i'd make it so someone else could sharpen the knife while i pedal....the last thing i want to try an attempt to do is sharpening a machete while pedaling a bicycle

  • well, since you arent bumping up and down on a road, it would be much safer.

but still, other people could do it as well

  • Thank you all for your support. I'm happy to see such a positive response.

  • Nice, one could put(ram) plastic bottles in the wheels and fill those to enhance the flywheel effect. They won't add any transportation weight that way. :-)

  • That's a good idea, though you'd have to be careful not to damage the spokes. It might work better to use an innertube threaded through the spokes which you could fill with water. I'll consider that for applications that require a heavier flywheel. For now, the cement filled tire is more than sufficient for all of the machines.

  • emilio . YOU rock . check reverser on myhomepage. new pics at bottom. the maya drum washer is yours, too? - w

  • Your design is pretty cool. I helped with the drum washer, but it's not my original design.

  • Multiuse Bike Machine for the win!!

  • This is an awesome design and should be mass produced asap.
