Gundam is, no joke, the Japanese Star Wars, and I don't see why you'd think any differently:

- Sci-fi stuff based on WW2

- Beam sabers

- Masked enforcer for the "evil guys" who ends up not really agreeing with them

- Good original series followed by CGI bullshit

@Kirbyoto2098 Well the main difference is that Star Wars really doesn't have any science behind it. Which is fine don't get me wrong. Gundam, however, is respected partly because it does use a lot of science to back up what it envisions as a future. The biggest issue is that Gundam succeeds the first Star Wars movie by a mere two years in terms of first showings.
