Yes thermite is fun to watch, but if you really want to get rid of the stump. Give it a weekly feeding of a saturated solution of pottasium nitrate ( in water ) for a few months, cover it and let it dry out for a few months and then light some charcoal bricks on it and it will slowly burn way down into the ground. I had a huge stump that smoldered away for 13 days. It burned way down into the roots, very effective. Thermite is fun tho' .

@str8tkillas You're right it's an oxidizer, but it doesn't speed up the DECAY of the stump, it keeps it BURNING and smoldering. Potasium nitrate does not release oxygen ( KNO3 to KNO + O2 ) until it reaches 400 degrees. There is a type of stump remover that contains lignin that speeds up the decay of the stump, but that's no fun. I would rather have a stump burn and smolder down into the ground like my own private backyard Centralia, PA , coal mine fire. 13 days is my best so far.
