  • Video is a bit cheesy lol, but that really helped me understand the experiment!

  • @Jonnyc0213 Too bad the explanation is a farce. This experiment had nothing to do with an observer causing a change in the behavior of the particle. That's absolute nonsense. The weirdness of the experiment is that matter and energy show characteristics of particles and waves.

  • You cannot simultaneously observe something and know its state.

  • this is more of a mind fuck than inception

  • wtf?

can anyone please explain what this video is meant to say?

is it a parody or smth like that?

i simply don't understand that observer-electron influence fact - it simply shocked my understanding

  • @Zozeii it's not a parody

  • @maglight117

i know...read about it after posting...it just seems...so weird...great video by the way!

  • @Zozeii that's what you get for getting curious about quantum physics also look up magnetohydrodynamics it will blow your mind

  • Electrons are self-aware.

    WAAAAAAAAAAAAT?

  • So matter is sentient? Was it being interfered by the the observer. Maybe the observer Gave off a certain wave.

  • oh great! now we have to let electrons vote now!

  • 2:24 he found a pokemon called InterferencePattern

  • where do you get the cult refrence?

  • HAHA look at the dudes face at 1:49 its fucked UPPPP... and i reall did watch the video cause i stumbled it but i am interested and have learned about it before somewhere.

  • QUA!?!??!

  • damn, the american education system must suck if none of you has heard of this in school before. In germany we learn this stuff in highschool. Unfortunately the vid does not explain what exactly this phenomenon means for us and WHY the observer has an influence on the outcome of the experiment.

  • the physisists can discribe them and there is the copenhagen interpretation, but there is no proper idea of WHY the observer has an influence.

  • yes, the american education system does suck. Legislators are ever trying to please the under-educated with programs that hold back the smarter ones "so that everyone has an equal opportunity." It really just hurts everybody but it dosn't help that the stupid people keep voting in those kinda people. I just finished highschool, and I have heard of this phenomenon, but I had to go out of my way to learn it, its not offered in schools.

  • yeah exact same story with me, exept i'm in high school haha. lucky for us interested in this sorta thing, the internet gives us an edge

  • germany is exceptionally good at physics though dude, most education systems wont learn about quantum physics unless it is your major in college, we graze over it in America but not to the extent that you guys do, Japan may also learn about it in depth, but i doubt most other countries know much about quantum physics in their normal education system

  • I get chills every time i watch this. o.o'

  • @Valduri pussy cant handle real life

  • friggin fraggin insane.

  • MIND = BLOWN

    wide-eyed slack-jawed drooling.jpg

  • maybe the particle was just nervous

  • So uh...Quantum is God, then?

  • This short is part of a feature length movie called "What the !#@$ do we know?", which goes into quantum mechanics, some philosophy, and a lot of advertising for a cult run by the reincarnation of a 40,000 year old Atlantean god. I shit you not. Be careful what you take from this.

  • Some of the science stuff is correct (like this). The bad part is the blatant rape and perversion of it into pseudo-religious cult bullshit.

  • Yeah...a good heads up. I actually read a good review for the movie so I watched it and was appalled at what a shameless plug it was for the fucked up cult. It was a very large part horseshit...

BUT this IS a real experiment that took place and really did produce these provocative results. I'd look for other resources online if anyone is interested. Look for "Afshar experiment" or "double-slit experiment".

  • for a secondi thought yousaid a "double-CLIT experiment" o.0

  • i wish i could give this video 1 MILLION out of 5 stars! Whenever I've tried to explain this to someone who doesn't know, I've never been able to simplify it enough for them to understand (or even believe) how amazing the implications this are.

  • this is the BEST video I have ever seen on the topic! people, you are confused about what the observer has to do with this BECAUSE YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO BE! Even quantum physicists are! Thats the whole reason why this TOPIC IS SO FREAKING INTERESTING. (morons).

  • I got it, I just got. I solved it! Oh, dear, oh dear. Can you believe this? I actually have just...? Damn! It all...

  • has there been any update on this? i mean that's pretty crazy that it does that but what is the reason for it? the video leaves off "it's as if it is aware..." well? is it? the information is almost useless to me unfortunately if i don't understand the basis for its function and i'm not a scientist nor do i really understand how that would work in the first place, so i can't figure it out myself

  • jesus christ... pun intended

  • best science video ever

  • ...

  • ah my head hurts.

  • trippy

  • How does that happen? how does an observer have an effect on anything?

    I'm totally lost :(

  • ah God, I love you're strange world you made

  • And to wonder what would happen if someone deep consciously believed that the eletron would go through both holes. Very very.. astonishing.

  • WTF? It's making it sound as if matter has something similar to that of a consciousness. Has it been checked that the observing apparatus was somehow interfering with the electron behavior? Somebody that knows this shit, please respond.

  • Ha, ha. It makes sense to me now...I don't mean to sound arrogant or anything but...it makes it very clear to me...I have read about wave functions, about Einstein and his theories, how particles move, how an obersavation could collapes a wave function...however I was never aware of the significance of this...that observation...could possibly do that?!!?...it makes so much sense to me and none and at all. This was a great video.

  • excellent explanation of the Infamous Schrodinger's Cat Paradox.

  • GAWD DID IT!

  • wow...this video is amazing...

physics has always been one of my favourite sciences, and this is a perfect reason of why.

  • I am a full physicist and I liked this video very much

  • i am studyin this this year

  • Beautiful. But what is the currently accepted view about this? Or are all scientists as lost as we are?

  • This stumbled upon experiment result has been a gift to humanity. Discovering all of what tt means is a welcomed journey of creative exploration.

  • i acully learned something of that :)

  • Are there any more videos like this with the same characters etc. Like by the same makers?

  • Yes, you could try searching Dr. Quantum.

  • couldn't the measuring instrument actually physically be interfering with the ability for the electron to behave as a wave. In other words, prevent the destructive cancellation that produces the wave pattern?

  • I think they would have thought of that and made sure it did not.

  • actually yes. In quantum physics, the act of observing alters the results.

  • So the neutrons are somehow sentient or maybe they are acting on some sort of instinct?

Or is the fact we are focusing our concious energy on observing the results somehow sending out a signal which is interfering with the neutron's behaviour?

  • No, as far as we know, subatomic particles are not sentient, and the ELECTRONS are being interfered with by the photons from the observing equipment. (or whatever kind of wave or particle the equipment is using.)

  • Except that this has been done with photons and full atoms, as well.

  • If a tree falls and there's no one around to hear it... does it still make a sound?

That came to my mind when i heard about the "observer".

  • WHAT DO WE KNOW!we only know what we see. It wasn't until the recent 100 years that microwaves were invented, since we figured out there are ultra violet rays, infared light etc, things that we couldn't see before and didn't think existed. Imagine how much more we dont know? maybe on a different level then a human our cells are aware they are being watched.Who knows maybe its not that farfetched. We are made of living matter .I say people dont even know 1% of the total mystery that surrounds us

  • Can you put a % on something that's infinite? ;)If all the things that now exist can exist, what says that more can't come into being at any time? Who says that "laws" can't be altered? If space is infinite like is said, then yeah... we don't know poop.

  • True but, just because playing devil's advocate is fun, what's alive? Maybe it's not "living matter" but just reacting matter? We know that matter reacts to essentially everything so couldn't "Life" just be like Aristotle's theory that all of reality is cause and effect. There was an initial cause, whatever it was, and then everything has been continuous cause and effect.

I don't expect you to agree, just to think about it and trying or succeeding to prove me wrong is ALWAYS appreciated ^^!

  • Nice, I wish he would have explained more after the observation. It seems unbelievable.

  • Oh, yeah. This was from the film What the Bleep!?: Down the Rabbit Hole. Rather interesting.

  • THC FOR YOUR TROUBLES!

  • far out

  • atlast... now... i know what exactly is Young's Double Slit experiment.... been studying it in hight school.. and then in university... but its just now.. that i understood how exactly it works

  • amazing, inspiring, motivating, emotional, scientific, realistic, marvelous, stunning, i ran out of words to describe this video. truly amazing. i love this.

  • look at your hands. and look at the symbol on both your hands. its an arabice number. All im gonna say to u is go and find the values of the arabic numbers on your hand and find out the sum of the two arabic numbers by adding the numbers on your hands, then try to find out what is that number..the significance of that number.. interested?

  • Ummm...

    I dont get it.

My brain broke about a few minutes into the movie

  • This is one of the most important videos ever, and no one knows about it.

  • no one? 10,000 views here. All Physics books have this in them. The average person cant understand the implications of this, even with a child-like approach to higher physics as in this video here.

  • Wow this is it. Plz make more such vids. Its easier to learn physics this way than studying a book having 2000+ odd books. Our finals are coming.. More or Electrostatics and Magnetic fields plz???

  • Heh. This from a movie called, "What the bleep do we know?" It's a pretty interesting movie.

  • wow...THAT is cool

  • This made my brain explode.

  • This is amazing!

  • THEY SAW US WATCHING AND STOPPED :O

  • Mindfuck at it's finest ladies and gent's!

  • Couldn't it be that the proximity of the measuring device upset the experiment? I have trouble believing the results changed simply due to the fact it was being observed.

  • believe it or not, but it is as it was shown.

quantum cryptography works on the same principle as this experiment. shortly explained: if somebody sees your cryptographed message, you will notice it because it was CHANGED by the observer when observing !!!

  • thats so great. I wonder how far quantum mechanics will take us, is it the end all?

  • Ya this is real. One of my friends is getting his physics PHD and he showed me this video.

  • (I'm a really intelligent guy.

I knew it a long time before, and after seeing some comments here, I know it for sure. I'm damn smart.)

GUYS, guys, guys, guys ... THINK like me.

    the real, ultimate question is...

What IS reality?... ... who/what created us? what created that? and what created that? and so on.

dont come with some lame 'God' excuse, because what created him? and what created that? and so on, and so on.

Think about that for a while. You'll be mindfucked.

  • I ask myself this question every single day, and even now I still don't have an answer.

  • You will be "mindfucked" because we can not comprehend things which are eternal (outside of time). It is possible that there is one true God; however, your brain will explode before you ever explain it... I really want to become a quantum physicist because it is about as close as I will ever get. I love things that are ridiculously bizarre like computers that run better when they are off, something being true and false simultaneously, ....

  • For real, homie.

fo shizzle ma wizzle, dawg. Ya dig what im sayin'?

Good luck with your future career of quantum physicist.

  • hilarious, i dont think mindfucked is a term god loves...

  • God? There is no God.

  • cause? there is no cause for this?

  • ok "eternal" = forever, and time is forever, time doesnt stop. so how is your god outside of time? he would be in line with time (if god exists at all). so therefore, in summation, you're a dumbass.

  • NO U.

  • Is reality the perception of your mind or is it the world around us? How can we tell the difference? I personally believe that perception is not our only way of living life, but I could be wrong.

  • you are wrong

  • No, there is emotion.

  • why didnt you mention emotion in the first place?...

  • You don't need to be created of you're already there. :p If you keep tracing it backwards like you said then something would have just existed, the substance(s)for anything to be made from, and the force(s)to cause things to happen. Everything is reality, but not everything said is truth.

  • Jeremiah 23:24 Or can anyone hide himself in secret places so that I do not see him, says Jehovah? Do I not fill the heavens and the earth, says Jehovah?

Acts 17:28 For in Him we live and move and exist, as also some of the poets among you have said, For we are also His offspring.

  • I'm not trying to preach and I'm not claiming to know all the answers etc. I just thought you should know something about what you talk about. It's ridiculous how many people didn't even take a look before attacking things. I guess they think it's taught in the bibles tht god is a limited little man or something. "God is spirit" it says, which is compared to water and air which are fluid if that's of any interest to you.

  • I'd rather be a N.I.G.G.A. so we could get drunk and smoke weed all day

  • Parrot.

  • i think about that so much good to know that someone else does too

  • I posted this on my Blog on Myspace...Wow...this gives me chills...Wow...

  • go die

  • Telling him to die because you don't understand this? Why don't you kill yourself, at least that way, the world will have one less idiot.

  • Very, very interesting. Though as it was clearly explained, I didnt really get the point of it, but hey nobody said Quantum Physics is easy ;-)

  • Dear friend. It`s not 114 that now know something that the others don`t. It was the last 114 people on the planet that did`n know. So now we are all informed.

  • absolutely amazing and yet exciting, its ashame only 114 views that goes to show you how far the human race has barely progressed.

  • Dude, your wording is bad. But luckily I JUST got your meaning. Use a period, people think that you mean BECAUSE this was only watched 114 times that the human race hasnt progressed but you're referring to the video. I almost flamed you for being retarded.
